Lighthouse Posted 3 April, 2018 Share Posted 3 April, 2018 Just for sh*ts and giggles. Stephens - Cranie - That academy defender, who sort of looked alright for a brief period last year but clearly isn't a 1st choice PL player Austin - Pahars - If only he'd stayed fit, we might not be in this mess. Cedric - Kenton - He's got good pace but I'm not sure what else he does. Carrillo - Bernard - Why in the name of f**king f**k did we sign him?! Tadic - Lundekvam - He's been good for a few seasons, so why has he absolutely bottled it now. Hoedt - Davenport - We quite obviously needed an experienced CB, instead we got this guy. Lemina - Squashie - Is he a battling midfield dynamo or a headless chicken? Not sure.

ooh it's a corner Posted 3 April, 2018 Share Posted 3 April, 2018 it's even more painful looking at it like that. With the exception of Austin/Pahars which is like comparing engine oil with fine wine, I would take today's players in every instance. They simply are not performing. They need to stop believing their own hype (and probably their agents' hype) and put in a bloody shift. Work hard in training, work hard during the game, try and notch some points. They really need to understand that there wont be a big queue forming to sign them up if we go down....this may be their only chance to earn £x0,000.00 per week. Nordic Saint Posted 3 April, 2018 Share Posted 3 April, 2018 That 2005 squad was much better than our current squad though: Niemi, Le Saux, Lundekvam, Svensson, Phillips, Crouch, Pahars and even Beattie until January, when we sold him to Everton, with just a fcouple of weak links in defence whereas our current squad is full of weak links in both defence and attack. Stud mark of doom Posted 3 April, 2018 Share Posted 3 April, 2018 One difference - this year we had loads of cash we decided not to spend in January; last time we had to sell Beattie to generate a few bob and spent all the available cash to try and save ourselves. Kenilworthy Posted 4 April, 2018 Share Posted 4 April, 2018 The squad in 2005 might have stayed up but for some terribly bad luck with injuries that at one time cost us all our forwards and then later all our keepers. Austin aside, this time round we have been very lucky with injuries - although you could say unlucky in that Tadic has remained fit.

I totally agree with this - we actually got some decent results in 2005 (Liverpool home for example). We also got ourselves into positions to win a number of other games (Boro at home, Villa at home, Arsenal away, Everton at home). This time around we’ve got a more talented squad (arguably) but we haven’t seen any displays that are a patch on some of those that we turned in during 2005. Had we not conceded one of the late goals in the games I’ve described then we would have stayed up, we will be much further away than that this time around. The 2005 squad lacked the ability and confidence to see out a victory and conceded late goals, after spirited displays and taking the lead in big games. This lot couldn't give a monkeys. Sums it up for me. Camara, Crouch - we could score goals. Phillips was affected seemingly in the last quarter of the season by off the field issues but we also had Ormerod who would add energy, although would have picked Phillips for the MU game after Crouch was stupidly sent off at CP. Quashie tried and we still had some players, albeit fading, from the 2003 side that we respected - Dodd, Telfer etc. Claus was past it well and truly and we now know in a pickle off the field but had a lot of good memories off the field and got a couple more seasons out of him. The wage bill wouldn't have been anywhere near 8th in the league that season - not like now. Disgusting that the likes of Forster were rewarded for a failed 2016/17 with a bumper new 5 year deal. Well done Les. Moreover, this squad just isn't likeable at all. Charlie and Steven Davis, the latter for his great service, I admire, Josh Sims for his promise and style of play and McCarthy for his improvement. Targett and McQueen are local lads and fans. Long has had an awful year but effort there at least. As you can tell, I'm scraping the barrell badly. The rest I plain don't like. Lemina has had the odd good game but too many shockers, JWP hasn't kicked on and far too lightweight. Cedric and Bertrand's attitude stinks, Hoedt is on a par with Davenport and Jakobsson, but worse because he is £17m. Has to be in any SFC worst XI for me. Wouldn't pick him for Exeter City, honestly, not even Torquay would want him. Stephens will do OK in the Champ but with a big pay cut, never a PL player. Redmond is misery personified on a pitch. Gabbiadini started so well but weak mentality, Carrillo not worth £1.9m or even pence, what does has Reed have to do to get sacked? The South American Jon Parkin. Undecided on Romeu, liked him but astonishing decline since last season and has to be something catastrophically wrong behind the scenes. I really cannot connect with this squad or hierachy at all whereas I was attending games home and away backing to ther 2005 side to the bitter end and all through what followed when I still lived nearby. When they are all gone and that includes Reed/Wilson/Gao/Liebherr as well as the players, I may well feel differently and re-connect.

Good players will leave and people will say variations of "Good" & "Good Riddance" etc. When the truth is losing talented players is ever really a good thing. It's why having a manager who can navigate that league is so important.

SuperSAINT Posted 6 April, 2018 Share Posted 6 April, 2018 205-7 is the real heartbreaker and where the wheels started to come off. It was novel trying to work out who would be bodged in to play at right-back and which of the 600 central midfielders would play back in those days. Super_Uwe Posted 6 April, 2018 Share Posted 6 April, 2018 If you are a fan of omens, the 3-2 home win against West Ham this season is almost identical to the way we beat Blackburn 3-2 at home in 04/05. The warning signs were there!

The warning signs were there! And smashed us 3-0 at their place late in the season.

The warning signs were there! I was just thinking the same thing this morning. That match had some dodgy referee decisions in it too...
Roo1976 Posted 6 April, 2018 Share Posted 6 April, 2018 Our first game back in the PL was against Man City, so it's kind of fitting that they should relegate us. And talking of comparisons of 2005, I'm really not looking forward to the 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth... your hopeful ,well be relegated before they play here. And if we manage to get to play this fixture with this much at stake do you think were capable of doing so?
Dellman Posted 6 April, 2018 Share Posted 6 April, 2018 205-7 is the real heartbreaker and where the wheels started to come off. Completely agree, loss of Wanyama, Pele and Mane was the turning point. Strange thing is that none of them were highly rated by the fans while they were here. Wanyama was regarded as a big sulk and Mane was rubbished and invited to return to Africa
Chickendippers Posted 18 April, 2018 Share Posted 18 April, 2018 In 2005 I laid a patio (called it the Southampton FC memorial patio) In 2018 I will be laying a new patio Uncanny parallel
Topcat Posted 18 April, 2018 Share Posted 18 April, 2018 (edited) Pelligrino's win % in the Prem was 16.7%, Wigley's 7.1%. Not quite as bad! Edited 18 April, 2018 by Topcat
Golden Balls Posted 18 April, 2018 Share Posted 18 April, 2018 Right now, I'd take a scenario of going into the last game with it in our own hands.
