Saints v West Ham (A) Match Thread

A few seasons of being a passing and luxury team means there is no Terry Hurlock or Mark Dennis type of 'get in there' football from Saints. The ability to close down is not there for scared passing teams. England had the same problem for years. Need a miracle to get 3 points now. Unless a 500 % increase in 2nd half.

No-one plays 442 away from home in the Prem - asking for trouble despite people on here banging on about how that's the way to go. You get overrun in the middle and totally dominated. As we are grimly watching now.

Bizarrely we need to go more defensive to have any hope here

This is awful, they are hiding out there. Where is the response? Where are the leaders on this team?
Playing for different clubs. We sold them all. Hojbjerg is probably the closest thing out there

3-5-2, yes, but not 4-4-2.

Keep selling our best players has finally caught up I guess.

Other than Van Dijk and Mané (who would be out of contract this summer), everyone we sold would have left on free transfers by now. If anything the problem has been the exact opposite, we kept and gave big new contracts to the mediocrity that stayed. And now that they have their contracts and have accepted that the big clubs won't come in for them they no longer care.

Standard trite message, which will no doubt be trotted out by the media. Selling players isn't a problem if you have the other cogs working effectively. Namely timing, value and quality replacements. We used to sign more players than we sold, and we found some good ones in the process. We also appeared to do our business quietly but quickly, early and at least in part on our terms. As time has gone by we've gone more for a 'one in one out' approach, increasing the risks of poor recruitment costing us, and seem to have been more haphazard/slack/poor with our approach. E.g. knowing you're going to sell a top player for lots of money for many months, yet not lining up any signings in advance.
