Pilchards Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 Got me thinking while we have a boring international break. If I said to a random football supporter could you name me the best player that ever played for Saints they would answer Matt Le Tissier. I think that would never be debated right or wrong? What about the rest of the current EPL? IMHO Liverpool - Kenny Daglish Manchester United - George Best Everton - Dixie Dean I think these are the easier ones I guess, but what do you guys think?
UpweySaint Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 I suppose it depends on your age, as a product of the 90's I can appreciate greats from before but, if you asked me on the spot, my answers would probably reflect my own 'heritage' as it were ... For me Liverpool would be Barnes or Owen though only as Kenny was before my time. Arsenal, Bergkamp or Henry? Chelsea, Zola. Palace, Wright. Leicester probably Mahrez. City, Aguero. Mn utd, probably Best though Scholes needs a mention. Newcastle, Shearer. West ham, Rio. Stoke, Shaqiri, never understand what he's doing there! West Brom, probably better historical examples but Gera was decent on his day. Spurs, Hoddle. Kane/Bale both worth a shout though. As does a fit Ledley King. Some of the teams with less time around the top flight it's tricky. Will always remember Fletcher for Bournemouth.
benjii Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 Gerard, Beckham, Lukaku. I asked a sample of "EPL fans".
Badger Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 Definitely a generation thing. For me, some random initial thoughts: Arsenal - difficult when I think back which probably summarises how dull they were even when the won the double. In recent time Henry Manchester Utd - could it be anyone other than Bobby Charlton ? Manchester City - Francis Lee Leeds - Billy Bremner epitomised the niggly spirit of them in their heyday Spurs - honourable mention to Jimmy Greaves, but otherwise f^ck off Everton - Alan Ball aside, f^ck off Newcastle - Kevin Keegan, and more recently Alan Shearer (although when I was up there in the 80's many still raved about Jackie Milburn). Chelsea - Peter Osgood West Ham - Bobby Moore West Brom - Jeff Astle Blackpool - Jimmy Armfield Coventry - Ernie Hunt (and that free kick). Liverpool - f^ck off, although Keegan was pretty special when he burst on the scene Wolves - Derek Dougan Leicester (&Huddersfield) - Frank Worthington For us, and my age, Channon.
Shandy_Top_89 Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 Best known is going to be more pleb than you realise; Arsenal = Henry Bournemouth = Wilshere/Defoe/Begovic Brighton = Murray Burnley = Pope Chelsea = Terry/Lampard Crystal Palace = Zaha Everton = Rooney Huddersfield = Mooy? Leicester City = Mahrez/Vardy Liverpool = Gerrard Manchester City = Aguero Manchester United = Beckham Newcastle United = Shearer Southampton = Le Tissier Stoke = Shaqiri Swansea = Michu Tottenham = Kane Watford = Deeney West Brom = Evans? West Ham = Di Canio

Badger Posted 26 March, 2018 Posted 26 March, 2018 It’s le tissier by miles and Liverpool is Dalglish. Wash your mouth out. This is the great debate really, Channon or MLT. MLT more talented and individual flair, but I can't shake off the early memories of Channon in his prime running at defences, and of course the windmill celebration. Both outstanding players, and a real privilege to have seen them play for us when at their peak.

Pilchards Posted 27 March, 2018 Author Posted 27 March, 2018 (edited) Leicester - Gary Lineker Spurs - Jimmy Greaves Arsenal - Thiery Henry Chelsea - Peter Osgood I suppose it’s always strikers? Edited 27 March, 2018 by Pilchards
Lord Duckhunter Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Great topic. Here's my list of each sides best player since I've been watching football . Only really struggled with Burnley and picking one for Saints. Arsenal = Berkamp Bournemouth = Ted Mcdougal Brighton = Mark Lawrenson Burnley = Robbie Blake Chelsea = John Terry Crystal Palace = Ian Wright Everton = Bally Huddersfield = Frank Worthington Leicester City = Gary Lineker Liverpool = Kenny D Manchester City = Colin Bell Manchester United = Bestie Newcastle United = Super Mac Southampton = Mick C or Le Tiss Stoke = Gordon Banks Swansea = Gylfi Sigurdsson Tottenham = Glen Hoddle Watford = John Barnes West Brom = Bryan Robson West Ham = Bobby Moore Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Both outstanding players, and a real privilege to have seen them play for us when at their peak. Hard one. Having been lucky enough to see both personally I'd put it like this. Le Tiss had better performances ( in that, if you picked the top 20 individual performances you'd seen in a Saints shirt, he'd have more in that top 20 than Mick) but Mick had more better performances, if that makes sense. I guess it's like comparing the Beatles to The Stones. The Stones had a dozen fantastic songs, whereas the Beatles had a body of work that overall was far better. Mick's underrated in football folklore if you ask me, he was a quality player. But Le Tiss gave me the greatest wow moments I've ever seen ( apart from 1/5/76) and will ever see. To this day I still can't believe that last day at the Dell, talk about writing your own headlines. I can't separate them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Burnley is certainly a hard one as you never think of anyone.
wild-saint Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 European footballer of the year - Kevin Keegan. Awesome player
ericb Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Arsenal = Henry Bournemouth = Ted Mcdougal Brighton = Mark Lawrenson Burnley = ??? Chelsea = John Terry Crystal Palace = Ian Wright Everton = Neville Southall/Gary Lineker Huddersfield = ??? Leicester City = Gary Lineker Liverpool = Daglish/Barnes/Rush Manchester City = Colin Bell Manchester United = George Best or Cantona Newcastle United = Shearer/Gazza Southampton = Le Tiss Stoke = Stanley Matthews Swansea = Sigurdsson (but only because he was the first i could think of, struggled there to be honest) Tottenham = Hoddle/Waddle/Blanchflower/Gazza Watford = John Barnes West Brom = Bryan Robson West Ham = Bobby Moore
Dellman Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Do reckon that anyone from the age of 50 minus will say Le Tiss 99 times out of a 100. Yes, it is the 50+ (I am80+) who may go for Channon even tho' Le Tiss was a one off master in our relegation struggles, we need him now...but overall Channon for me
ashnats Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Pray, who are the 'EPL'? It stands for English Premier League. It refers to the top soccer division in England. It is used in many countries to describe the league, including news channels and pundits abroad.
Lets B Avenue Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Great list and I bet that took some time to think it up. Burnley is certainly a hard one as you never think of anyone. When they got promoted in 1973, their star man was Martin Dobson. With an honourable mention for Dave Thomas. Earlier heroes were Ralph Coates and....... Brian O'Neil.

I would probably only disagree with two. Peter Osgood for John Terry and Jimmy Greaves for Hoddle. As good as Hoddle was, Greaves was a goal machine and possibly the best finisher I have seen play. I totally agree with you in that it is so difficult to chose between Channon and Le Tiss. As you say, Le Tiss had more of those wow moments but Channon was more consistent. We were lucky to have both.

Earlier heroes were Ralph Coates and....... Brian O'Neil. Burnley , for me - Ralph Coates. And also, Dave Merrington. Not just from a Saints bias, but because he was one of the first Burnley players cards I found with the bubble gum packets in the 1960's. Bournemouth - Ted MacDougall surely. Edited 27 March, 2018 by Badger
Lighthouse Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Depends entirely on the age of the person you're asking. For example nobody under 50 is going to remember much of Emlyn Hughes, nobody under 40 Kenny D, nobody under 30 Ian Rush etc. I could name these players but if someone asked for a Liverpool player who stuck out in my mind it would be Gerrard.
saintquin Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Not in the Premiere era I know but, I would say Keegan was probably our best (world wide) known player.
Badger Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 From the 1960's the best known Saints players supporters of other clubs would have immediately identified us with were Terry Paine and Ron Davies.
mrfahaji Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Definitely a generation thing. Manchester Utd - could it be anyone other than Bobby Charlton ?. Erm, George Best, presumably...?
Winnersaint Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Burnley , for me - Ralph Coates. What a hairdo!
Winnersaint Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 Bournemouth - Ted MacDougall surely. Or maybe Phil Boyer?
Winnersaint Posted 27 March, 2018 Posted 27 March, 2018 As far as the Manc clubs are concerned can't look much further than George Best, who imho was quite simply the best I have ever seen on a football pitch and for their noisy neighbours probably Colin Bell.
Hatch Posted 28 March, 2018 Posted 28 March, 2018 Are we suggesting just Premier league players, or all time players ?
sadoldgit Posted 28 March, 2018 Posted 28 March, 2018 Although to be pedantic, the OP didn’t ask for the best EPL players, they asked for the best known players for each of the current EPL clubs, I.e. who are the best known players to have played for any of the clubs in the current EPL... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Being another in the 50+ brigade as well that's pretty much how I see it too. MLT at his best was amazing but too often we'd be playing with 10 men for 85 minutes of a game, when he'd suddenly decide to turn it on for 5 minutes and win a game on hIs own. Channon was not as spectacular but was more of a 90 minute team player (except for whenever he had money riding on a horse running during a game when he'd hog the touchline for a few minutes till the race was over ). MLT probably shades it in the context of the OP's question, i.e. best known for playing for us, but who was the best player? How can you compare but if I had to it would be Channon and his 46 England caps.
sandwichsaint Posted 28 March, 2018 Posted 28 March, 2018 Best players I've seen playing for Arsenal = Berkamp / Adams Bournemouth = Wilshere! Brighton = Lawrenson Burnley = Trippier Chelsea = JT Crystal Palace = Ian Wright Everton = Ratcliffe Huddersfield = Leicester City = Linekar Liverpool = Dalglish Manchester City = Ageuro Manchester United = George Best Newcastle United = Malcom McDonald Southampton = Channon Stoke = Gordon Banks Swansea = Toshack (Jack Cork!) Tottenham = Hoddle Watford = Barnes West Brom = Cyril Regis West Ham = Brooking
