SKD Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 Worse case and we go down, of those we are likely to keep, how would you line up? For me, ----------McCarthy----------- New--Yoshida--New--Targett ---Stephens / Reed-- PEH--- ------------JWP--------------- Sims----------------Redmond ------------ Austin ------------ Long, Gallagher, Reed/Stephens, McQueen, New Keeper, Davis & Bednarek Young with not a great deal of experience in there - Austin would/should score for fun (providing he can stay fit) in the championship. A championship experienced CB would be vital.
vivasadio Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 Long should be the first player out in the summer whether we go down or not
aintforever Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 The Championship is probably Long's level to be fair, he may do a decent job next season. I would be tempted to get Surman back for a swan song if we can, he's not playing every week at Bournemouth, would be a decent captain.
The Saint Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 Think Hoedt would be OK for us. He hasn't exactly set the PL on fire, so can't see him being chased by any other club..

S-Clarke Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 'if' we go, I can see it playing out like this - Romeu, Lemina, Hoedt, Stephens, JWP, Cedric, Bertrand, Gabbiadini, Boufal, Tadic, Clasie all off in the summer. FF will go to someone as well, he's on too much money to be a NPC player. We'll have the likes of Gallagher, Sims, Targett, Reed back in the squad and they'll play most games. McCarthy Ryan Federicks (if Fulham stay down) Yoshida Bedranek Targett Sims Hojbjerg Davis Redmond Austin Carrillo Subs - Lewis, Gallagher, Reed, Valery, McQueen, Long, Jones So there's a basis of a decent team there, not anything ground breaking, but enough to be competitive without having to really reinvest other than a little bit of $$ on a RB and some CB depth. Sounds like a likely outcome.
aintforever Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 It's impossible to guess what the side will look like without knowing what Gao's intentions are. In theory, with the parachutes and the majority of the VVD money still to come we should be able to field a decent side. If Goa decides to pocket the VVD money and is not interesting in investing we could be in a Sunderland type situation. It obviously also depends on wether the players have relegation clauses in their contracts.
RobM Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 I think some of the teams suggested here at incredibly ambitious, as there's little chance of the bulk of our squad sticking around. Redmond and JWP won't stick around in the Championship. They're both young with International aspirations and despite the stick they get by some Saints fans, they're highly rated by the footballing world. Hojbjerg came here to establish himself as a regular top-flight league player, so he'll be off. Probably not to an EPL club, but another league abroad. Any other internationals, or players with an expectation of playing in a countries top league, will also go. Same for anybody with big wages or a big resale value. Therefore, say goodbye to Bertrand, Cedric, Lemina, Hoedt, Boufal, Gabbiadini, Tadic, etc, etc.

Would probably do them both a lot of good, to be honest. PEH debatable, one that could go either way.

Crab Lungs Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 The only way redmond or jwp will leave is if someone needs to bolster their English contingent for continental football. I literally can’t see anyone wanting them otherwise. Hoedt would look **** at any level.. basically another Jakobsson so wouldn’t begrudge him a move at all. A 16m Dutch Aaron Martin. S-Clarke Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 Who would want Stephens? He's young, english and a decent ball playing CB. There will be a few takers I reckon. (not top clubs, but your Burnley's, Huddersfields etc)

We have to remember that we're not going to be raided by the top clubs, teams like Burnley and Watford will offer players like JWP a good avenue back to the PL. I'd be very very surprised if JWP left us for someone like Burnley or Watford. He's got a good head on his shoulders and knows that at this current time we are the best club for him, especially if we go down where he will almost guarantee a start week in week out. From what I'm told he see's his future with us (as captain, in the long run). Should an elite club come in that may change, although I don't think he'd ever leave to become a bench warmer at city etc... (money does talk though). I would fully expect him to stay should we go down.
Doctoroncall Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 It all depends on whether the players have relegation clauses in their contracts. Assuming they do, the players that will be off, either through their decent performances, contract expiring or personality of a rat agitating for a move are: Bertrand Cedric Lemina Forster Tadic Romeu Gabbiadini Redmond Gardos Pied Those that could possibly be off depending on the deal on offer, timing of the deal etc: Hoedt JWP Boufal Hojbjerg Carrillo (maybe something in his current contract that he can leave) Those that are staying as the club will not want them to leave or they'll be lucky to have offers for them: Stephens Clasie Austin McCarthy Yoshida Bedranek Targett Sims Davis Lewis Gallagher Reed Valery McQueen Long Jones Slattery Seager Wood Flannigan Hesketh
Turkish Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 You've got to admire Les Reeds planning here. What a tremendous strategy to loan out Targett & Reed to championship clubs in preparation for next season when we are in that division and we sell Bertrand & Lemina for a combined fee of £60m. We'll have two ready made, championship ready players to step into replace them who are already proven at that level, thus saving the club transfer fees in replacing them. After dominating the net spend trophy in the Premier league I really thought Les might have his work cut out to try and go onto the next level of ruling the championship but it seems like he is nailed on to win the trophy in his debut season back there. If we can just find a buyer for Carillo (unlikely) Then that's another few quid in the bank with Gallagher ready to step in there too. He really does have it all worked out. What a guy. teamsaint Posted 5 March, 2018 Share Posted 5 March, 2018 The trick will be trying to keep a few of the better players who might get offers, as Newcastle did with Shelvey. I'd think that keeping PEH and JWP would be key to this. Some like Bertrand and Lemina we have no chance of keeping, ( and will need to shift anyway) and some like Romeu would be replaceable if we get back up quickly. I'd make Pied an offer either way, as I think he could do a good job in the Championship, and offers decent cover in the PL.
