Wigan Away Match Thread

you obviously didn’t go

to

newcastle

To be fair Newcastle are a premier league side. Wigan are in the 3rd division. We played so bad at Newcastle but imo I don't see any difference in todays performance? Have we even had a shot at goal?

I would take Carrillio off and maybe bring on Long. Hit some balls down the wings for him to chase. We just look so predictable right now.

We are so weak in every aspect of the game.

From passing, tackling, finding space on the ball and off it.

Slow in decision making.....truly atrocious.

Embarrassing.

What I’d give for a scrappy 1-0 to us now.

On this display we deserve to lose this game....go out the cup ....and eventually go down.

Spot on.

Lack of confidence and fitness for starters.

Then we have a long floating ball going towards Carlllo and Gabby is running on hoping for a flick on.

That long ball is going straight to a centre back.

Start of the second half Boufal and Tadic need to swap and then on 60th minute Redmond and Sims come on for Boufal and Tadic.

Keep one sub back for extra time.

This looks and feels like the fifth round match in 2008 when we lost 1-0 to Bristol Rovers and a tubby lad called Lambert scored - even the awful pitch, idiotic BBC commentary and biased officials are the same.

Bound to be scrappy and nervous today, Hughes has only had two short training sessions with the team and has simply played his senior players in a 4-4-2 - at worst it’s an assessment exercise! A goal for saints could change everything and I think we will see Long on straight after halftime and he will rattle these defenders and keeper. Despite the nerves and creaming commentators I reckon we will sneak this - COYR!

Hopefully Hughsie settles them down a bit. These are international players so should be used to playing different formations with different teammates.

I think they are very nervous and really trying to impress but it is being manifested as nervousness. I know it well, when the team I play for plays the other team from our town in the league, the first 30 minutes are a shambles of overhit passes, misplaced passes and poor control. Once we calm down and stop being nervous about the game we start passing it around well and win it. (Not saying we are prem level or anything though, lol).

Carrillo is like an on pitch version of Pellegrino. Get rid.

Hoedt is a 16m Dutch Aaron Martin without basic footballing skills for a centre back. Get rid.

Ross Wilson, take a bow.

Harsh on Aaron Martin. Three of our four defenders are sheite. Not a great foundation for the team to build on.

We really don't look any better but then Hughes was unlikely to make much difference after 2 days.

TBF you are probably right, at least we are attacking more but defensively you could actually make a decent case for us looking worse.

Problem when u play a 442 is that the midfield gets over run, that's why the 4231 formation was formed, to win the midfield battle. If you want to play with 2 strikers go with a 352 type of formation.

Tadic and Boufal are useless, Gabbi and Carillo are no better its been the main reason why we have struggled for way over a year now, our attacking players are just not very good. I would of loved to see Sims and Mcqueen down the wings, least they have something to prove and would be more direct.

Perversely I think it is good Hughes is seeing it exactly how it has been all season - he will learn a lot about the players. A scrappy 1-0 will do.

I agree. Anyone expecting any miraculous improvement in our style and performance today was kidding themselves. The best we can hope for is finding a way to win and Hughes using it as learning more about the capabilities or lack of of the players he has, which he can hopefully use in the next couple of weeks before West Ham.

It seems unfair to single out any one player after that horror show, but oh my days Cedric has been absolutely garbage. Just gifts Wigan an attacking opportunity every time the ball goes near him.

In mitigation though, it's our first 45 mins in a new formation under a new manager, against an in-form team playing full of confidence who were obviously going to put us under plenty of pressure. I had no illusions that we would go out there and be dominant.

My only hope is that Wigan won't be able to keep up the tempo and will burn themselves out. If it goes to ET then that might work in our favour.

We are playing 4-2-3-1 though.

Absolutely spot on. I haven’t boo’d the team off since that day at Rovers a decade ago. If I was up there today I’d have boo’d that. I can handle us having mediocre players but good players being out worked, out fought, out thought by a team two divisions below with 4000 fans driving through snow to get there is pathetic. I barely care if we go through to the semi’s. Whole club top to bottom deserve relegation this season. Mercenaries.

All of that said, I think we may sneak a 0-1 and have a semi at Wembley to look forward to. I wasn’t prepared to see our players look so complacent today. That must change to get a result.
