Colinjb Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 (edited) http://www.planetfootball.com/nostalgia/tribute-james-beattie-much-underrated-premier-league-cult-hero/ Nice little article about the Muffin Man. Had no idea he had a BBC sport column back in 2002/03. Edited 27 February, 2018 by Colinjb
the saint in winchester Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Me too. Colin, could you rename this thread to "James Beattie - sports column"?
Lighthouse Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 This is not the greatest thread in the world.
Bad Wolf Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 I saw this and thought he'd died. I got into football the summer after he left so I can only comment on watching goals back but everything I've seen has been great. My dad met him while shopping once, said he was a top bloke. My science teacher went out with him as well, she said he's very cocky but his heart's in the right place and despite being a bit of a "lad" he's ultimately a good bloke. Fair play to him for keeping up his P*mpey hate after he left us though!
Pilchards Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Can’t you change the James Beattie words to Pompey?
SimplyRed&White Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Was with him last week. He is between jobs at present but still living in Harrogate. Finishes his coaching badges in the summer and keen to stay in football
OttawaSaint Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 ****ing legend. Loved his penalty technique and cupped ear vs Pompey. My favorite was his free kick against Vialli's (or was it Gullit's) Chelsea in a comeback 3-2 win in 2000. He was really unlucky with injuries and should have had way more England caps. Oh and it's his birthday today.
rooney Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Whilst his first touch was not the best, he was great for us and could always be relied upon to score goals. I remember the free kick at home to Chelsea and the one at WHL when we beat Spurs (Hoddle Out), Fantastic.
fish fingers Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 RIP James. I'll always remember him for his goals.
Charlie Wayman Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Was with him last week. He is between jobs at present but still living in Harrogate. Finishes his coaching badges in the summer and keen to stay in football You mean he is an unemployed ex-footballer. No doubt he earned a few bob along the way so should invest some of it in a football related enterprise rather than try to be a coach unless that's what turns him on. Very creaky headline, he's much too young to have moved on to a higher plane.
Harry Faz Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 the 2002/03 beattie is just what we need right now ............
simo Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Didn't someone write a song for him to the tune of Chitty Chitty bang bang ? They could play that at the funeral!
hypochondriac Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Great player for us. Not a great human being.
Miltonaggro Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 So sorry to hear this news, 40 is no age, even for someone from Lancaster.
Noodles34 Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Great player for us. Not a great human being. why?
Noodles34 Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Was with him last week. He is between jobs at present but still living in Harrogate. Finishes his coaching badges in the summer and keen to stay in football he was looking round my kids school in southampton the other day, so assumed he was staying back down here. I thought his missus had a salon in Poole.
hypochondriac Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 why?A few reasons really, the toxic atmosphere in the dressing room before he left which led to our relegation was led by him and then after he retired, his antics out in town and sone of the things he did at weekends. I'd rather not say any more.
Cabrone Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Good striker and lethal from the penalty spot. Really liked BT and was sad to see him go TBH, had he stayed we probably would have stayed up in 04/5.

Dark Munster Posted 27 February, 2018 Posted 27 February, 2018 Very sad news. After a bit of a dodgy start he became a top striker for us. How we could do with someone like that now. RIP big guy.
whelk Posted 28 February, 2018 Posted 28 February, 2018 Any truth in the rumour it was from a head on collision with Avril Lavigne? RIP both
Noodles34 Posted 28 February, 2018 Posted 28 February, 2018 Appently he was on a plane with Glen Miller and Buddy Holly........ one for the kids

diggers Posted 28 February, 2018 Posted 28 February, 2018 Think you're science teacher might be a little deluded, or has a very long memory. He'd been married to my sister-in-law for the past twelve years, and lived with her for three years before that.

I left school in 2006 and I think this was about Year 9 or 10. And she was retrospectively at the time. Said she went out with Bridge too. And no, she wasn't even remotely fit.

FloridaMarlin Posted 2 March, 2018 Posted 2 March, 2018 http://www.planetfootball.com/nostalgia/tribute-james-beattie-much-underrated-premier-league-cult-hero/ Nice little article about the Muffin Man. Had no idea he had a BBC sport column back in 2002/03. I did. I ghosted it.
Lets B Avenue Posted 2 March, 2018 Posted 2 March, 2018 I did. I ghosted it. Did you type it in a Lancashire accent?
Micky Posted 5 March, 2018 Posted 5 March, 2018 Now back in work as a coach with Garry Monk at Birmingham, hope they both do well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43279784
