Who? Because a decent season in the Championship sees strikers valued at £15m+.

All of whom are probably better than this fella he didn't even score goals in the sub championship standard argentine league!

Posted

I have seen him play live twice now (once as a sub) against West Brom, so not the best benchmark, but from what I have seen I think he has been a decent buy. He has won a lot of headers from balls pumped forward, the main problem being that he is so isolated and no one is willing to take a chance on running onto a flick on that the ball usually goes to an opposition player. Last Saturday he flicked a brilliant ball on from a goal kick between 2 defenders but the 'supporting' player didn't move. Any kind of run towards the ball would've resulted in a chance.

He has also got into goal scoring positions and either been unlucky in that the opposition have got a last ditch deflection or our ball into the box has not been good enough. When he has had a chance, it has been on target and forced a good save from the keeper. His movement is very intelligent and he is a handful for defenders. In the box, he looks very dangerous to me and I can see him getting a few poacher type goals in the next few matches. He also has good vision, as proven by the good assist for Tadic, who very nearly fluffed up the chance as the ball bounced off his foot and onto his knee but luckily he managed to retrieve the ball and score a good goal. I personally think Guido will be like Pelle for us and will be a good signing, from what I've seen so far.

I wouldn’t take your opinions from a podcast if I was you, Gab Marcotti predicted Lamina would be a flop on The Game podcast.

Why don’t you give us your opinions. From what you’ve seen so far what makes you think he’ll be a flop.

To be fair, Marcotti is a professional contrarian, his prevailing trait seems to be to say something controversial and then respond extremely aggressively to any counter argument. It's a bit like reading some of the threads on here, becomes tiring to listen to very quickly, and the main reason I stopped listening to The Game a few years back.

Whereas Phillipe Auclair and Julien Laurent generally come across as knowledgeable, balanced and non-partisan.

For the record I think he'll be a 'flop' (and by that I mean he'll have an average to poor goalscoring record here and we'll end up losing money when he moves to an inferior league towards or at the end of his contract). It won't entirely be his fault though. He has limited but distinct strengths but we do nothing to maximise them. A good coach would be able to get a good (although not overwhelming) rate of goals out of him. A good manager would be able to build a team that gets him the chances to get the goals. Unfortunately it seems Pellegrino is both a poor coach and a poor manager, so I don't see Carillo - or any other player, or the team overall - reaching anywhere near their potential.

6 games without a goal. You'd think spending £19 million on a player would improve the team instantly. This guy doesn't cut the mustard for me.

2 assists in his last 2 games and a lot of good hold up play.

Said when he came that I couldn’t give a flying **** if he didn’t score a single goal for us, if it meant he brought goals out of others instead. So far looks like he might have that ability, but he’s not gonna do it up front on his ****ing own you useless **** Pellegrino

Posted

Get players close to him and don't leave him isolated. But we are doing the same as we have done with the other players, leaving him to do it all himself. I must admit I expected him to be a little more dominant in the air though.

Posted

I don’t think he’s worth £20m but I don’t think he’s helped by our team selection or tactics either. He came in to the game more. with Sims linking up with him. Decent head back for the assist.

Posted

Watched him off ball when we were in attack...his movement is poor, but then after 6 games with rubbish delivery he’s probably given up or at least become confused about how to affect the game. We have three strikers...all have exhibited the same goal drought...that is clear indicator that it’s a managerial and tactical problem.

Posted

It’ll never happen because Pellegrino’s not very good at managing teams, but I’d like to see how Carrillo and Gabbiadini do in a two up front formation.

Carrillo did well to set up Gabbiadini today.

and maybe a problem of not having very good attacking midfielders to supply him?

I wasn't expecting miracles from him and he's been feeding off of scraps. Given that Pellegrino clearly pushed for the signing of an ex-player it's kind of galling that he doesn't appear to have any idea how to set the team up to get the best out of him. Despite the clueless approach of the manager, two assists in two games is a fair return - hopefully the likes of Boufal, Sims, and Gabbiadini get more game time alongside him.

Posted
The service into him was crap all game, the only decent cross came from Sims and we scored from it.

It wasn’t even a particularly good cross. Well played by Carrillo to kill the pace from the ball and direct it back across goal.

The guy is crying out for someone to play alongside. How on earth can Pellegrino not see this?

Do you really need to ask?

I swear if he had Le Tiss he would have used him like Branfoot did.

He might be aware of it but he clearly doesn’t like starting games with 2 up front.

If Lukaku can look useless when isolated by a static midfield who wont get within 30 yards and fail to run beyond, then I don't see why people would expect differently of Carrillo.

Gabbi has been crying out for someone to play off, Carrillo is crying out for someone to play off him... Hey, lets play Long and Redmond! :|

With Redmond on the left. So of course that frees up the right for Tadic!

I don't think he really does much, definitely not a game changer. Austin continues to be the only really scoring threat we have. When he's not there the defense doesn't have much to worry about.

Posted

Wasn't he supposed to score a goal every 90 minutes of playing time or something? All this talk of bringing the best out of other players reminds me of Emile Heskey the most notorious of none goal scoring strikers!

Posted

I predict Carrillo will score 4 goals a season at this level. He is what he is. I also predict that when he scores his first goal, the Reedites on here will hail him as a cross between Ronaldo and Messi.

He is never going to be a prolific goal scorer, no matter how many other forwards he has supporting him. If he scores the goal that keeps us up, I will be happy. If he emulates Bobby Stokes and scores the winning goal in the cup final then he'll have been a brilliant signing even if he never scores again.

I actually think he is good after watching the first few games.

Most of our key goal-scoring chances have been due to him and he is actually quite a good creator given how few chances we create. Looked good with two pacey wide men (that run with the ball) and someone playing off him.

Is it 1 defeat in 6 since he has started. Decent Runa of form

Not very good but has improved us. He’s not a goal scorer though.

Doesn't score many, does he?

It seems he's a supporting striker, someone the 'proper' goalscorers (Gabbi, Austin, Obafemi) can feed off - a Toshack who needs a Keegan. He'll score from heading in crosses, or when the opposition defence have switched off and forgotten about him.

Give him a chance you boys sound like a bunch of wet tarts in a brothel........ He will come good needs support play him and Gabba up top for the stoke game.....

This is the thing though.

I think he has come good. As good as he's going to be. Which for us in this situation was never going to be enough.

That's not his fault. Can't blame him for wanting to up his pay packet and I have no issues with his efforts on the pitch.

And I'll keep wishing him well and hoping he can bang some goals in at some point, knowing it's statistically unlikely.

But whatever it was we needed to buy in January, he's not it.

Well said.

He is by no means prolific, but I'm not sure anyone expect him to be but if you can't see what he has added / improved to our play then you are deluded.

He needs someone to play off him, if that's Gabbi, Redmond or Boufal in the '10' I don't care. He'd also benefit from some pace from either flank cutting inside (think Mane off Pelle), hopefully Sims can provide this.

He's probably about our level, Austin is still are best CF, by a long way.

Originally, from his highlights videos I thought he was a box striker like Austin.

He's not. He's not really able to win many high balls, doesn't really hold the ball up, isn't very fast, and never seems to be in position to have a shot.

I don't hate him as a player, I'm just unsure what he's actually good at.
