Still young for a centreback, hope we stick with him in the first team as his weaknesses are areas easily improved.

It's a bit of a myth that he's "too young for a CB". He's 24. He's about the right age to be maturing in that position.

I was chatting to a member of his immediate family a couple of months ago, they said, as much as he loves Saints, he's going to hand in a transfer request at the end of the season if he's not assured of first team football.

If true, good riddance.

I never said too young, I just said young. As in there's plenty of time left to improve with experience. Centrebacks for me generally peak between 27 and 32.

Why? =/

Because he signed a lucrative new contract six months ago. Its not his call to force a move.

No player should be assured first team football, especially a player who's still very raw and partly responsible for our defensive struggles.

I think I read a similar rumour about Stephens looking to possibly move on a few weeks ago - maybe from the same poster.

But the implication wasn't of some Billy Big Potatoes who thought he should be guaranteed to start for Saints every week - more that Stephens just wants to play and is prepared to drop down a division if it means getting his career properly underway. It goes by fast.

At the time of the rumour, he'd gone from playing about 20 games in a row to not being in the match squad for three months while we kindly fattened up Van Dijk so he could hit the ground running for Liverpool.

I don't think you can blame Stephens for becoming disillusioned - I imagine Les blew plenty of smoke up his arse when he signed a contract extension; to then find himself relegated to the U23s for three months while we indulged a player who didn't even want to be here is not exactly encouraging.

I hope he stays. He's got plenty of room for improvement, but there's a good player in there.

Before everyone gets their knickers in a total twist "a couple of months ago", which as others have pointed out after a steady run in the team was when he ends up nowhere near the team, yet a bad smell was being pandered to. Any of us with any ambition would be pretty hacked off if we were treated like he has been at work, 1st team football to not even making the bench treated like a green academy nipper.

If I was him I would voice similar thoughts to my immediate family, anyone who thinks otherwise will be typing any response to this with their nose.

Once again today Happy Birthday Jack.
