According to reports, we HAVEN'T met the release clause. Rather, we've supposedly negotiated a lower fee that Spartak are happy with but on the condition they get a replacement. Hence the stalemate.

If we fail with this transfer and go down, then it will be 100% because of the recruitment and player sales aspects of the club. In short, this board and those responsible need to be protested against massively.

We’ve offered what they want and Promes wants the move. If it falls through you really can’t blame Saints. I’m still confident it will go through.
Well you can blame Saints as they faffed around for weeks trying to get him cheaper and typically have run out of time.

Sky are usually spot on. After JVDs exit, just one signing would make our Boardroom and manager look very weak ahead of the most important relegation fight in the Club's history.

Lack of investment will have an effect on player morale too.

It's really not looking good, not looking good at all. We needed a striker (we have bought one who scores in 1 out of every 4 games for a club record fee, but lets see what he can do), we needed a quality Centre Back to replace JVD and stabilise our leaky defence, we needed a replacement for Redmond (who is clueless) and it now looks like thats failed too. In truth, we probably needed a quality keeper too.

Failing, failing badly at lunchtime... failing the manager, team and the fans.

Get your finger and chequebook out Boardroom or prepare for relegation by putting a British manager in who's up for a relegation scrap, and if he fails, knows the Championship enough to get us back quickly. If Pellegrino fails to get 3 points tonight and we have this squad... its time for drastic action.

Club mouth-piece Jeremy Wilson tweeting how we've done all we can, Spartak not budging. It's worse than North Korea

Really? all they do is create lots of "linked with`s" so some will always be right

Sanchez to City they had as nailed on, just one example

I don't understand why we wasted so much time on this if we weren't prepared to meet the release clause. Still people keep saying we have a good squad time for the players we already have to prove it I guess.

Well, if ever there were a time to prove it, it's tonight because if Quincy doesn't rock up, and we lose tonight (or draw even), then there will be the mother of all meltdowns on here tonight. Buckets of popcorn ready!

You can't really say it isn't warranted though. If that occurs then the club have really taken us for mugs.

So, to clarify, we haven't met the release clause...? We agreed a fee which was conditional on Spartak finding a replacement, and they haven't, so the deal is off. Which begs the question, why not just meet the release clause now?

Christ now I'm genuinely starting to think we won't be getting anyone else in. There should be protests tonight against the board if this is true. Absolutely disgraceful January window.

There should be enough in Carillo, Gabbi, Austin, Tadic, Boufal, Redmond, Sims and JWP to chip in with a few goals.... should.

I'm far more concerned about our defence. We have apparently replaced Fonte with Bednarek and Virgil with Hoot. :?

This is why you can blame SFC if nobody else comes in - if they knew that the deal was contingent on Spartak finding a replacement then they should have been pursuing the back up targets. At a time when you're second bottom, you can't rely on things out of your control happening (another club signing a player) especially when they don't appear particularly keen on selling. As usual, we've faffed and faffed and have now whipped out the usual "quiet day at SFC, did all we could, difficult time to do business etc. etc.". It just doesn't stack up when you see teams like WBA securing targets like Daniel Sturridge.

My prediction is that we won't sign anyone and we'll then subsequently hear about a desperate attempt to take a thoroughly average player on loan but couldn't get it done in time.

You'd have thought they'd have learnt from last season's CB catastrophe but clearly not and it sounds like an almost identical situation here. Unfortunately, this year it won't cost us the League Cup, it'll cost us our Premier League status.

If he signs there will be no reason to get over excited and think our troubles are over

and if he does`nt, getting all hysterical and calling people various expletives will not help

What ever happens the team/club need our support until the end...

Given that if we go the extra few £M there is a release clause and that personal terms are already agreed and the window doesn't close till 11......is it crazy talk to suggest tonight's result could be a factor?

You really are deranged sometimes you just have to accept that things don't always go the way you want especially if you are in the relegation zone especially in January

I don't think we have had a good window but I don't see many players suitable to SFC have gone elsewhere.

We just need Gabbadini Boufal and Redmond to perform to a higher standard

This 'failed to sign a replacement' malarky is planted to make them look like the bad guys. The bare reality is that we have not met the fee Spartak want.

Spartak have another month until their season resumes, and another 3 weeks to sign replacements. This isn't anything to do with their side, this is simply because we don't want to spend the release fee.

Yep. Or we've been out to Spain and done it.

What would be the point of protesting before we know what the impact of a quiet window will be on our ability to avoid relegation?

We won't know the impact of this window on our fortunes for several weeks. I'd rather protest if/when relegation becomes a certainly rather than make an arbitrary guess that a quiet window = certain relegation.

I accept that not adding more quality to the team doesn't increase our chances of survival on paper, but fans creating a volatile and negative atmosphere at matches isn't exactly going to improve our chances, I would venture.

Protesting now won't help a bit......everyone needs to get behind the team and act as the 12th man.

Protesting and inquests can come later....hopefully when we are safe.

Should have stuck with PUel and shipped out the troublemakers. That much is obvious....this season has been an unmitigated disaster from start to finish.

Heads should roll at the end of the campaign whether we stay up or not.

Exactly, money talks ultimately - it’s just typically Saints spin to deflect from the fact that we’ve cocked up another January window.

Maybe we don't have a spare £35m sitting in the bank and we'd have to break our 'living within our means' operating model to make this deal happen?

It’ll cost us a hell of a lot more if we get relegated.

That's what I'll take away from this. Although it's not so much a case of a fee Spartak want, but a fee they cannot refuse (i.e. release clause). And granted you shouldn't just go out and meet release clauses willy nilly, but this feels like one of the situations where we absolutely should.

I don't think it is. Sadly, we have left it to the final day before making a formal offer. Now Moscow can't be asked to go find a replacement, one that they don't need to bust a gut on today as their season is on a break. I don't think it's about the size of the offer now, we could offer £50M and they would still say they don't have time to find a replacement. One could argue they should have a replacement lined up in case we make an acceptable offer, but it seems they would rather keep him now than get on the phone this afternoon/evening and buy/hire a replacement. :(

This, I highly doubt we have that much liquid cash available to transfer instantly.

A lot of people getting upset are the same ones who said the squad is to good to get relegated. If that's the case we shouldn't need any signings to stay up on the other hand if we do need signings to stay up the squad clearly wasn't good enough in the first place....

The spin from the club is just hilarious now. If we don’t sign another today this will be the biggest balls up so far in a thousand balls ups.

I've got a feeling this will go through about 5 mins before the window slams shut, who can blame Spartak for holding out? It's their under-contract player who they don't need to sell but know we're probably desperate to sign, they've got us by the minerals. If we don't budge enough on our current offer they could very well wait to last-minute and then accept it and say 'can't blame us for trying'.

He really needs to sod off..

Although I would agree with you, I am worried about the alternative. Gao as an owner is an unknown entity. Several clubs with foreign owners have gone to pot very quickly with them making the day to day decisions.

Today's story of Spartak Moscow not agreeing to sell due to not being able to find a replacement in time sounds like BS.

As I understand it:

- If as reported we've met his release clause - then they'd have little say in the matter, and would be obliged to sell and it's up to the player to agree terms.

- I think a previous poster has already said that the Russian transfer window is open until 22nd February, so they'd have 3 weeks to find a replacement.

If the deal's off, then several of the reported 'facts' are contradictory.
