Does a new manager improve the teams chances of survival?

Recommended Posts

Love to know everyone’s thoughts about a new manager coming into a struggling club.

Stoke and WBA are currently winning after replacing Pulis and Hughes.

You can say that West Ham and Leicester have certainly improved.

Would Saints improve after sacking Pellegrino?

We can at least try, right?

It does look like changing managers has had an overall positive impact this season.

I think we could improve considerably with a new manager - the team is underperforming and the current tactics and decisions from MoPe are awful.

However, why would a 'better' manager come now? Given the situation we are in and how far through the transfer window we are.

Think we're stuck with MoPe.

There must be some more capable managers than Pell our there surely? I mean, we are not expecting premium, just someone with basic competence as a football manager, something our chump sorely lacks. Any of Hughes, Monk, Koeman (ok, unlikely), Jokanovic, O’Neil, Strachan would instantly be better than the current clown and surely we could attract one of them?

Literally anyone could get this squad to survive in this utterly horrendous league.

Except the current idiot. Well done Les and co you bunch of utter ****s.

It would be very difficult to get worse unless we decide to get an umsworth type character. Almost any vaguely competent manager with a bit of fight about them could keep us up in my opinion.

Yes it gives new hope, a new vision and moral lift. Even if we went down it would give the manager a head start in leading the team.

Not sure at this stage of the transfer window it would save us, Its goinf to be Mopo that has been made clear, daft but clear. We.re stuch and there is no talisman to rally round, we've sold them all. Sad sad story of mismanagement at all levels

It is not possible to justify sticking with Pellgriino. The only justification is they want to sign some players before they sack him

The level of incompetence from the board is criminal . Decisive action was required in November

On the evidence of 4 wins in the league , a new manager would not have much of a target to get past, 5 wins alone would make us pretty close to safety add a few draws

Correct. It would be hard to do worse. But our final 6 games are amongst the toughest run compared to relegation rivals. The 8 games after Spurs are easier!

Hopefully we’ll have grown some by then. Not under mr inspirational tho.

I said it on another thread earlier in the week - it's irrelevant who we appoint after sacking Pellegrino - the simple act of sacking him should be enough to kick the team up the arse.

The thing is the team we have are capable of so much more and we all know that but under this current manager we are getting worse and worse.Tomorrows defeat to Tottenham simply has to be his last game. The club are commiting suicide by sticking with him.

Since we are listing the success stories of other clubs in appointing new managers to save their seasons, an honourable mention for Woy of the Palarse

A new manager brought in now could not possibly do any worse than the incumbent who has put us into the situation we find ourselves in now, the worse possible outcome of a change of manager would be no change in our performance. So the worst outcome of a change would be relegation with a fight rather than what we have now, relegation without a fight.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.. do not go gentle into that goodnight.

Agreed, in performance terms we’ve literally got nothing to lose as we couldn’t be any worse. Sadly, it’ll cost money and make Les look a bit foolish (more so than he already does) so we probably won’t do anything.

How is it our board reacts so slowly to signings and sackings. Strachan brought in would kick some asses and get some fight. If we are to go down let us do it with some passion and not the limp performances of late. He should have been sacked after the Palace game. Talksport interviewed one of Benitez's team months ago and he was asked would Pellegrino take Saints forward. He said quite simply 'no'. How could the board have no one in the coaching set up to stand in for a week or so after Pellegrino is David.

That really depends on the manager, the club and situation.

If it's a massively underperforming club, then you have a good chance of quickly getting a response. If it's a really poor team doing as well as they can, like Boro last season, odds are you won't improve much.

A new manager would clearly improve us a huge amount.

In a nutshell........

Posted
Well it certainly can't make it any worse...

Saints are the only club that don't get the 'new manager effect'.

Remember the Wigley , then 'Burley effects'....

I believe he shoudve gone before Everton BUT how on earth did he survive after Leicester, completely baffled by the board on that

Agreed, should have been the final straw.

I seem to remember some article a few years ago which tried to show that a new manager doesn't necessarily do any better than the the one they succeed. However, in order to show this they had to ignore the honeymoon period when the effect of having a new manager is to galvanise the squad for a short time. It is possible that that is what we are seeing in these other clubs. Nevertheless, even a honeymoon effect is better than the same old, same old of keeping this manager. Those extra 6-12+ points could be the difference between staying up and getting relegated.

I think we have solved our problem. The answer is clear. If changing a manager improves your chances of winning we need to change our manger after every game. Sorted.

Too many people on here claiming the squad is good enough. It isn't. There is no 'Captain' for one. Just giving someone an armband does not make i so.

Next 8 after Spurs

Brighton

WBA

Liverpool

Burnley

Stoke City

Newcastle

Swansea City

West Ham United

A semi decent manager could win half of those (minimum) even if our squad is weak just now.

Without a doubt yes. We will finish bottom with MP IMO. Can’t see us winning another game under him.

And we need what, about 4 wins and 4 draws to have a hope?

This. The squad is decent and an experienced and credible manager who could get them focused and organised would get us points, though perhaps too late to prevent a real battle over the next few months. However, you put the likes of Strachan or O'Neill in charge and the fans would raise their game too - we'd have a good chance. The fact that the clowns on the Board can't see this is incredible and our relegation is now dependent to a large extent on Reed's idiotic vanity - awful situation!

Appointing a Strachan or O'Neil (hasn't he just signed a new contract with Ireland?) on a short "keep us up contract" would go against the all club PR. We've spent years building this fantasy brand as the club that is forward thinking, future proofed, youth promoting, canny in the transfer market all while playing stylish football to appoint WGS would make all that seem like a lie and the board can't have that.

we did that to a lesser extent with Puel.

all the talk of managers brought in to fit our system as opposed to the other way around..... for puel to play a diamond with redmond as a central figure (with Austin wide left)

that is no dig at puel but shows we left this mythical "southampton way" then. it was dead in terms of shape and set up of a team.

It’s clearly good enough to be outside of the drop zone. Do you genuinely believe we have a squad worthy of relegation?

I think it's too late either way.

I'd be surprised if at least half the squad haven't got their agents sounding out potential summer moves and now couldn't care less if we go down because these moves become more likely.

Well the stylist football hasn't happened for a while now!

We've played very well in enough games right up until the moment we score to suggest the team is easily good enough for top half (recently Watford, CP, Arsenal) - a new manager would tell the team to carry on playing the same way not sit back on our penalty area and wait for the team to attack us

Marco Silva’s just been given the boot !!! Would he save our season/keep us up ?
