kwsaint Posted 8 December, 2017 Share Posted 8 December, 2017 Reading a recent issue of When Saturday Comes and there was a letter commenting on the fact that three players in the current England squad were born in Sheffield. The letter also suggested other cities which might at one point have had three players born there in the same squad - this included London and Manchester, but also Southampton. Which got me thinking. How many England internationals were actually born in Southampton - not necessarily having played for Saints? I could only think of two, Wayne Bridge and Ted Drake - and they certainly were not in the squad at the same time. Think that the letter writer might be mistaken Any ideas? One for the statisticians

I wonder who those players were/are? See a bit of London media bias has crept into that league table, I would imagine that most Lancastrians would be put out not to be top of the list, because if you wanted to be pedantic and drill down into the figures how many of the Greater Manchester and Merseyside players pulled on an England shirt before both of those Metropolitan "counties" were created and split out of Lancashire. There were quite a few, like Terry Paine, born in places like Winchester, Basingstoke and Petersfield. This is a list of players who won England international caps in their time as Saints and Pompey players. If you look them all up on Wikipedia, you can find out which ones were born in Hampshire. Of course, there were also many England internationals born in Hampshire who won their caps as players of other clubs. CB Fry is debatable as some say he was a Corinthians player at the time.
