Should VVD be sold in January?

How the **** does this have anything to do with him being Dutch? Keep your xenophobic bull**** to yourself please.

We've been here before the last few years. Lovren, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Shaw and now van Dijk.

Maybe it was a mistake keeping him, but in the end we needed to show the other players we would try to keep everyone. We can't be sure either that we had a decent offer on the table in the summer. In the end it's all speculation.

I'd sell him if the price is right, otherwise keep him.

Good point, Dutch are way better than Swedes.

I'll be glad to see the back of him, he's a shadow of the player from last season and his body language seems to look like he's not interested each week.

If he thinks that his “dream move” is close, VVD will not want to jeopardize it by getting stuck in on behalf of little old Southampton against Spurs or Man U. Starting him would probably be a mistake.

Wouldn't have thought so, because it's not Les who's not picked him for 2 games in a row.

Which raises the question of who isn't actually telling us the truth? As someone else pointed out mp said only a few days ago that he was told there were no talks going on with vvd. He said he met Les that morning and asked him about it and was told "don't think so". Which suggests either mp was lying to us and knew about it and was not "resting" vvd as he claimed. Or Les lied about it and didn't tell mp we were in talks to sell him. Either way the club have ****ed up by keeping it silent. If they said there were talks going on that might bring other clubs to the bidding table. Why only talk with one buyer when you could potentially get a better deal from someone else?

For me this next month could be the moment we look back on in years to come and say "xyz" should not have happened. Virgil is not playing at his best but nobody is. We are in a relegation fight and do people feel more confident with Yoshi and Hoedt at the back or vvd and one of them? Selling your best player when you are struggling in January is just pure craziness. It doesn't matter what the manager is doing, it is about the decisions behind the scenes that are being made and by doing this we are making ourselves even weaker. That to me is nuts.

If Les or other Saints have been talking to City and lying to Pellegrino about it, this may say something about the manager’s status with the board. Pellegrino did a good job of pleading ignorance re Lemina’s signing in the summer, so he could be blowing smoke.

Ultimately there’s no way for us to know for sure.

Reports in Spain say Barca have shown an interest in VVD.

Maybe that’s why we are protecting him as a couple of players might come our way from there?

Pellegrino’s last throw of the dice I say.

Barca normally bodge their defensive signings or play midfielders at the back.

Can't see them outbidding any of the English suitors.

Have to reinvest the ££££.

But will we? And what calibre of player can we attract?

My fantasy is that we announce the sale of VVD, and within minutes the appointment of Tuchel.....and give him about £70m to spend.

Best Xmas present ever but a pipe dream of course.

60m and Pep doesn't even intend on using him as first choice.

3rd Choice bench warmer would be fitting karma for him, but hope we get more than £60M and trust we invest wisely. Anyone else think footballing world has gone utterly bonkers when you even think of paying such amounts for squad players?

Good news. Need to invest that in compensation for MP, new manager, keeper and striker. Then we would stay up

That would be some business if all that happened, particularly after we'd paid 10% to Celtic, all the usual fees (greedy b'stard agents, etc.), compo for MP's assistants and possibly our new owner buying the rest of Kat's shares. Better sell another one.

Should have gone in the summer. The board we're in an impossible position. Damned if they did, damned if they didn't. Our season is an example of forcing players who don't want to be here to stay.

Our season is an example of forcing a player who doesn't want to be here and who is an out and out **** to stay. No problems at said ****'s probable destination with their player who wanted to leave but was told no.

Selling vvd is utterly stupid as we cannot defend at all and he is our best by miles

But playing a cb at full back is equally stupid

If VVD is not playing to his best then selling him for big bucks and buying a committed replacement makes sense.

Only a clueless idiot would play Stephens at right back.

Pointless keeping him if he's just a toxic waste of space, best to get the $$ in and add some players who want to be here. I don't think we'll replace VVD though, we probably see we've already done that with Hoedt and Bedranek.

To be fair to Pellegrino, at the start of the season he said he only wanted players who were committed to the club. Wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to flog him in the summer but was over-ruled by Reed - might explain why he still has a job - if he’s been proven correct.

Pellegrino said in the last press conference that he wanted to keep him.

Another one from Kevin Palmer. He claims that Liverpool had the biggest offer on the table for VVD in the time period leading up to Christmas Day...

With that backdrop in mind, Southampton officials are fully aware that they are in the driving seat in these lucrative negotiations and while we revealed that Liverpool have lodged a bid that is close to their valuation of the player, Saints can now wait to see whether City, Chelsea or any other club can match or better that offer.

That sounds like it's definitely come from us.
