January 18 transfer window

SKD

Wouldn't surprise me if towards the end of the window we go for Adama Traore.

Watched him at Villa. Runs in a straight line down the right very quick, before putting his cross into row Z or running it out for a goalkick- pretty poor player to be honest.

Personally I'd rather buy celtic's best player than a reserve player from the French league even if it's a big team. I do think we have seen a shift in the calibre of player. I don't know if that's due to our finances being tighter or losing some of our best scouts.

Plenty of fantastic players have been found hiding in the reserves of big sides. You'd think that for them to have been bought by those sides in the first place that they must have shined considerably at one point - and perhaps can again. Salah and De Bruyne are two good examples and further back I seem to recall Vierra being stuck in Milan's reserves and Berkamp falling out of favour at Inter after a couple of average seasons. The trouble with signings from these big clubs is the players are already earning a fortune.

that said I am still wondering when we are going to sign Kieran Tierney.

Is he a `TV highlights' type player, as every time I see him (all be it mostly in cameos) he makes something happen.

I generally agree with that logic, although I doubt our value would drop that drastically, especially as we’re a business with a guaranteed £65-75 million on our books (and no, it doesn’t matter that the payments are staged! Accountants adjust for such things).

Mr Gao is a successful and ruthless businessman. I cannot believe he’s an idiot who doesn’t realise the state we’re in, or that he can be easily duped by Ralph and Les’s positive spin.

He clearly didn’t borrow £200 million just so he could asset strip and repay his lenders really quickly. It isn’t a payday loan to get us through a few bad months, it is a long-term loan to give him the capital to invest long-term so he can grow the value of his asset. That’s how multi-million Pound businesses make money.

Borrowing £200 million, asset stripping and selling off the shell of a club remaining to cobble together £210 million to repay the loan plus interest would mean he hadn’t made any money for himself at all!

The best way Mr Gao can make money is to ensure Saints remain an established Premier League team (with accelerating TV money) that makes good returns on investing in players by buying cheap, improving them and selling for big profits. And then repeat. Then in 10 years time he may have a £400 million asset. He can then pay off his loans (plus interest) and walk away with a massive profit - and happy supporters too!

Step 1 imho won’t be to hire a new First Team Manager (as he is hopefully self-aware enough to leave that to football experts), but to hire a Chief Executive with a remit to turn things around quickly and avoid relegation.

The lack of a CEO for all this time raises questions about Gao's business sense.

He won't stay fit though. Only over 18 games in one of the last five years.

Goal recored 1 in 3/4. It's not that bad, but it's way, way off what I'd expect from a big club signing.

Maybe he's a plan C player like Fellaini, although can't remeber the last time I saw Chelsea hoof the ball long. Hazard would **** off very quickly if that became a regular thing

How did you come up with £200m?

Promotion to prem is worth £170m to £290m (Deloittes). It follows that relegation with no guartantee of a bounce back in the period of continued Prem payments, will drastically reduce the Club's valuation.

Given that no other Premier League team is in for Carillo, we'll most likely get him. Just hope it is very soon.

It's nice to know that the club are "concerned" by recent results, no **** sherlock!!!

A more encouraging article..... mentioning running out of patience with MP.

Certainly not a "has our full backing" message.

And lol at the realisation that our current position hinders recruitment!!

I'd be ecstatic if we were to bring him in, he's class - can't see it happening though...

Do we not have any ITK's anymore :(

If they do send him out I'd have thought it'd be for pl experience. Like you say would be good.

“Concerned by recent results” **** me they are clueless. We’ve been **** all season, we would probably be rock bottom if we hadn’t already played virtually all of our winnable home games.

But sounds like, apart from the goal, he's having a mare. [emoji849][emoji852]️[emoji852]️

Hacked off that he's not been getting many chances at Chelsea this season and pushing for a loan move, so probably not in the best state of mind and/or match fit state? Similar demeanor to Gabbiadini recently I guess. Edited by trousers

I'll buy that. From his profile, just think he's a possibility.

I imagine that Batshuayi would fit into the category of a player who would want a move in in order to enhance his chances of making the World Cup.

West Ham as part of Carroll the other way apparently

Can we make a move on Angus Gunn? England u21 keeper. Top banana.

Shouldn't be too difficult to persuade him that he'll never be number one at Man City for as long as Ederson's about.

Maybe Pep can be tempted by a straight swap for Redmond...

Either are upgrades on what we have so means we wont get either and despite being exactly what we need those in power have lost their way.

We have 2 strikers - one wants away not exactly rocket science to bring in. Ulloa is exactly the forward we need - links it, holds it up and brings others in and decent in the air.

Yep, he's got it all. Apart from being able to score goals.

We will not bring anyone in.

Shane Long is laying the PR groundwork in the Echo today..

We've been totally conned by the board.

At the recent fan event, Gao said we were looking to bring in Chinese/Vietnamese playmaker, Yu Phat Kok and younger brother Yu Dim Phuc. Supposedly Asia's answer to the Touré brothers.

They know they'll have to bring in someone to appease the fans or they'll face serious unrest. So, I think they'll bring in the cheapest stiker they can get with a realistic chance of scoring 1 or 2 goals more than Shane Long, which will be Carrillo, and then whoever they can get on loan for the rest of the season, with an outside chance of another dirst cheap player like Bednarek on deadline day, probably someone with a poor injury record keeping his price down. That's the minimum they can get away with and not have mass 'sack the board' protests for the rest of the season.

I would suggest that they won't be able to avoid then if we slip into the relegation zone and go much longer without a win.

What good is signing a striker if you have no proper creative outlet in the team? Are the board / manager that dense?

The flip side is what is the point having a creative outlet if you don't have anyone who can actually put the ball in the net. Arguably Tadic had no problem racking up the assists as a creative outlet when we had Pelle and Mane in the team.

He's a once in a blue moon player; he'll have a game like he did against Arsenal last season, but then hasn't done anything since through injury and just generally being a bit average.

His attitude is somewhat questionable too- on his return to Villa Park he made a pretty horrific tackle two minutes in and got himself sent off.

It's a shame. There's something in there, the right manager could coach him into a good player, but there's no doubt so far he's wasted his talent. Great power, pace, can dribble, then decision making, final ball and shooting just woeful.

Maybe it just highlights the emphasis too many have put on power and pace. Same way people write players off as too lightweight, too slow etc. You can be a decent effective footballer in loads of ways.

How many fast wide players have there been in the last decade where people say 'if they just sort out their end product they'll be great'? If they did that, they'd be unstoppable, but that's the tricky bit. Isn't that hard to sign sprinters.

He's a bit like Chamberlain in League One where he could just run at full-backs while being stocky enough to hold people off, but even then Chamberlain's football brain was probably far better.

Just shows really that for all the obsession with physical attributes, as you said, you need to be very clever at the top level. Other side of the coin you have JWP with that particular strength in his head, yet because he plays wide but is slow and not particularly strong, he gets pelters.

I didn't post it to be positive :)

Fair point- positivity is in short supply anyway, can't use up all the rations of it at once :p
