Scummer Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Shame, I quite liked that place. Used to go in it before matches sometimes. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/4045743.Titanic_pub_shuts/
Huffton Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Seems a bit strange. Was in there saturday night and it was heaving. Always use it pre match as it (was) one of the few pubs in town that let kids in on a match day. Bugger!
Summers Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 I was in there last Sunday after the Man Utd game, Always got on Superbly with Trev and Jacqui as they were lovely people, and i've known them since I was about 16. I do hope there will be a way for this pub to rise again because this couldn't have happened to nicer people.
saints_is_the_south Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Used the Grapes a few times before games & also at weekends. Always been heaving whenever I've been in so surprised to see it close.
Summers Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Expect that the pub was only seeing trade on a matchday, which wasn't being seen as a profitable occasion as anything that was made wasn't being sustainable.
Dicko Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Used to drink there every Friday & Saturday in the early 90's It was heaving in those days, popped in a couple of months back and couldn't believe how dead it was
Stanley Saint Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 Last time I went in it was fearsomely expensive.
Junction 9 Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 I use it most matchdays. It's an Enterprise inns pub hence the outrageous beer prices. I use a pub in fareham run by the same company and they charge exactly the same. They are struggling as well. They seem incapable of making any changes to compete. Shame, I'll miss it.
St Steve Posted 14 January, 2009 Posted 14 January, 2009 It's not surprising, blame the credit crunch, blame the smoking ban, blame the tax on booze, blame the wetherspoons chain. Shame.
Master Bates Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 Everytime I went to Grapes before an evening match we'd win, that was only 4 times.
Tom Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 Doesnt surprise me.... i doubt the takings were going into the pub if you know what i mean.
saint1977 Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 Sad - had many good times in there post-Match in past seasons although I have to drive to most games now and on the rare occasions I can have a beer my pubs of choice are further afield. I think the refit they did made the pub a bit too similar to others in the City Centre whereas it had a bit more character before. I wonder if the new JDW down the road may have been a big factor.
Deppo Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 The landlord is staging a protest, standing outside the pub until the Enterprise Inns chief resigns. I don't fancy his chances...
Junction 9 Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 The landlord is staging a protest, standing outside the pub until the Enterprise Inns chief resigns. I don't fancy his chances... I just read that in the Echo. Do you think he's there right now? I don't.
Deppo Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 I just read that in the Echo as well. We're like twins. He won't be there now. Shall we kidnap him tomorrow? That'll show Enterprise Inns.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 ... blame the smoking ban, blame the tax on booze, blame the Wetherspoons chain. Blame it on the rain... Blame it on the Boogie.
Junction 9 Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 I do like the new Wetherspoons though, so I'm partly to blame for all this.
Deppo Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 Why don't you just spit in the Grapes landlords' eye as you walk past him to get your 99p pint?
St Steve Posted 15 January, 2009 Posted 15 January, 2009 Why doesnt he just let himself in and protest instead of sitting outside, im sure he has the key and still being charged rent it will be warmer.
Junction 9 Posted 18 January, 2009 Posted 18 January, 2009 He could get pished as well. I doubt he could afford those prices.
Kaiser Soze Posted 18 January, 2009 Posted 18 January, 2009 Went in there a couple of times but always came out about 20quid lighter, very very expensive.
