Micky Posted 17 October, 2017 Share Posted 17 October, 2017 I think you must have watched a different game to me! They look extremely defensive and limited technically. Just putting huge numbers of players behind the ball isn't impressive. You're right it isn't. But it will be enough to test our shot shy / goal shy players. SaintSeb Posted 17 October, 2017 Share Posted 17 October, 2017 I think the time has come for Fraser Forster to be dropped. I doubt he will be, but it has to be in the manager's mind now. I'm confident we would have beaten Newcastle with any sort of competent goalkeeping performance. At the moment we look like those teams you used to play against at school where they'd obviously had no specialist goalies so put the biggest lad in the net and hoped for the best. Other than the odd game he has been shambolic for a year and a half. In other parts of the team I feel that Van Dijk, contrary to what many people are saying, should continue to start. The same goes for Bertrand. They weren't as bad as people made out on the weekend in terms of their efforts. I think the reason we are seeing Virgil stride out into midfield less is because we now have Mario Lemina giving us more dynamism in that area, so he doesn't need to as much. That or he just doesn't give a **** anymore. I don't know, I'm not him. In midfield Romeu and Lemina remain, obviously; then in front of them I'd like to see Tadic, Redmond and Boufal play together. As much as the former two have been a bit sh*te at times and the latter does often flatter to deceive, they are our best attacking midfield options on paper. I think they could benefit from developing an understanding not only amongst the three of them, but also with Gabbiadini. The Italian has to start now as he has finally proven what a lot of us already knew; that he is our best striker. Is it too much of a stretch to suggest that being dropped for Long for a few games fired him up? Lineup: GK: Literally any other keeper, living or dead. RB: Cedric CB: Yoshida CB: Van Dijk LB: Bertrand CDM: Romeu CDM: Lemina RM: Redmond CAM: Boufal LM: Tadic ST: Gabbiadini

He is either very rusty still, in which case why is he starting 1st team games, or in my mind just doesn't give a flying toss. He is just going through the motions. Sloppy Penalty at Stoke. Lazy touch on the ball leading up to Newcastle's 1st goal. Completely awol in tracking anybody for 2nd, just ambling along. Several poor headed clearances that put us back under pressure. Nearly came a cropper in a 50/50 because he didn't fully commit to it. Still made no enthusiastic statements about being glad to be back in the team, and fully committed to helping the team win, just a sulky "I'm a professional and will give 100%" He hasn't done anything that Hoedt or Stephens would have been able to. Drop him and play players who want to do well for the club, not just themselves. I was very pro keeping him and hoping he'd accept the clubs stance with grace and knuckle down, but that doesn't seem to be the case and he is just stinking the place out at the moment. But , I still hope we don't give into his spoilt brat antics, and let him rot rather than sell to his beloved Liverpool. Maybe when he finally sees the club won't sell him in Jan he'll man up and do what he is paid to do properly rather than just going through the motions to get himself fit for January. Matthew Le God Posted 17 October, 2017 Share Posted 17 October, 2017 They were more physical than us. What exactly is that meant to mean? van Dijk, Hoedt, Romeu, Lemina, Yoshida down the spine of the team are hardly wimps! Quicker than us. Quicker at what exactly? Long, Cedric, Bertrand, Redmond, Gabbiadini, Boufal aren't slow. West Brom pack numbers behind the ball and don't have much in the way of pace throughout their team. Lost it less than us. They hardly had the ball, Leicester controlled possession. Easier not to lose it when you barely have it! Plus in any case I though West Brom looked pretty poor on the ball and need lose it needlessly throughout that game. And had a goalie ten times ours, even after injury. Nonsense. Forster really isn't as bad as you and others make out. Yes, he makes the occasional mistake but you overlook all the good things he does and focus on the occasional error. Selective memories! Another big tall physical team, ironically at the away game last season I thought we would get bullied with Clasie and PEH but they ran the game! Another draw, if we are lucky... I was (am) fully behind the clubs stance in keeping him, so I'm not going to whinge now, but I wouldn't be averse to seeing him dropped if his performances don't improve somewhat. nta786 Posted 17 October, 2017 Share Posted 17 October, 2017 I'd play this tbf: McCarthy Cedric VVD Yoshida Bertrand Romeu Lemina Davis Boufal Tadic Gabbiadini Long comes on in second half, keep Redmond away for a while. With the other two subs I'd put JWP and Austin on depending on the circumstances, so those two can come on if we are losing. I'd drop Forster, and whilst McCarthy made a howler last night it was one of those ones which wasn't like he parried it directly to a player or dropped a simple catch, just a mistake which I'm sure he won't do again and try not to be arrogant and just boot it upfield, especially in a Premier League game compared to a U23s game- plus Forster has done a similar howler last season anyway! However despite the line up above, gonna predict a 1-1, Hegazi or one of their tall ar*e defenders to get a goal and we'll reply back with a long range goal from Lemina! WBA will score on the 60 minute mark which will leave Austin coming off the bench to power a header in the 83rd minute from a gorgeous cross from Boufal. It is , but they flyer really doesn't make it clear. If you buy a ticket for BURNLEY at home you can also get one for WBA half price. There's also the offer that members can get £5 off ticket for two games of their choice this season . I think we'll comfortably see the smallest league crowd so far this season on Saturday as WBA won't bring many so there'll be a couple of blocks of the Northam empty. Very much the Chelsea system, and Tadic and Boufal as inside lefts and rights could be very effective - they're both wasted out wide. Gabbi in one of the support roles would be effective also but there's no adequate replacement up top - Long would waste any chance created and Austin isn't mobile enough. The only other change I'd contemplate is Stephens for VVD. He just doesn't look interested and had a mare against Newcastle.

Still made no enthusiastic statements about being glad to be back in the team, and fully committed to helping the team win, just a sulky "I'm a professional and will give 100%" Sorry but no matter how many times I watch their second goal I can't see any obvious blame apart from Forster. At worst van Dijk could be accused of not being tight enough to Perez in the first bit of the move, when Shelvey picks him out, but given the positioning of the rest of the back four, that would have exposed us to a simple ball over the top. Once the move develops van Dijk continues to track Hayden. Romeu fails to stick with Perez, but even that is harsh. Ultimately it was a good move by Newcastle - a pity that we don't seem capable of putting such a move together ourselves - but we still restricted them to a half chance from a difficult angle. It should have been comfortably saved - if not caught then put out for a corner. I don't remember many poor headed clearances, but I remember lots of good ones. I'm not denying the rest of the points you make, I've been very disappointed that he doesn't seem to have got his head down in the way that Schneiderlin did, for example. There are also moments he looks a bit off the pace, or maybe half-ars£d. But for these two points particularly I think you are looking for things that aren't there. VectisSaint Posted 18 October, 2017 Share Posted 18 October, 2017 Did you see the U23's the other night, LeG? So, we can't drop Forster because our reserve keeper dropped a clanger playing for the u23s. Not much point having a reserve keeper then if he is not going to have an opportunity when our first choice keeper is crap. McCarthy needs to be given a chance in the first team, he can't actually be any worse than Forster, he might be as bad, but will never know unless we try.
