Club Crest: would you change it?

I love our badge. Not sure why it needs changing. Perhaps some semblance of improving each element as in modernising, clearer etc but keep it the same in essence.

Ignore me if I'm stating the obvious - Google 'Southampton Crest' - click images - open - right click 'save as image'

No. I was a Brownie

I was after just the shield which i cant find a decent one online like you have done.

I like the idea but a major influence in the club's dedision making is that they'd never own the full copyright to the city crest as they would to a bespoke design. I'm not sure the minor tweaks/additions would satisfy the club that it wasn't easy to pass off on merchandise.

A crest I found intersting was on a the Church hall or building near St Mary's at the time the stadium was built, it combined the city crest with the St Mary's crest which from recollection was crossed keys. That would have been a suitable change at the time we were moving back to the area (although probably still subject to a copyright consideration). The building though is no longer there and I've been unable to trace this on the internet since.

Good point and interesting post

If you mean this, you can right click on this image and 'copy image' or 'save as' (or phone I think you just click and hold and 'copy' or 'add to photos'?

Ruined by the ball and scarf, as someone commented above this really dates it to the 1970's.

So you want modern design then, no history within the badge?

Not at all. But the club was established in 1885 not 1974.

As I said in an earlier post I'm never been a great fan of the badge but given the possible modern mess we might end up with it might as well leave it as it is as it (doubt we'd end up with a 'classical' design if redesigned).

My wife would be so upset if the badge was changed . It is part of the club's heretage. Why must every thing be trendy,

Just what they said before current design!

I don't see why the ball and scarf are seen as 70's icons, they are timeless items.

Agreed! Loads of clubs have a football on their badge, big clubs at that!

Saints didn't have that badge for the first 89 years the club existed! 'History' would have been keeping the city crest as the badge.

Would have rejected the change of badge in 1974 after 89 years with a different one?

Isn't that a bit like saying World War II isn't part of history because there were millenia worth if history before that?

No it is not like that... because at no point did I say the current badge is not part of our history.

It has been part of the history for the last 46 years, but not the first 89 years of the club. We had many more years without it than with it!

Having the current badge since 1974 is not a good enough reason for it to remain the club badge for ever more.

Pretty much every single English league club has had multiple changes to their badges.

Problem is people get attached to the one they grew up with and disregard that there were changes before they grew up and will probably be changes in the future.

Why have you youngsters got to change everything all the time? If you’re that bored I’ve got a few research projects that will keep you busy.

Did you feel the same about changing badges away from the traditional one of the previous 89 years in 1974?

WTF!

With your attitude we'd all still be living in caves/mud huts and grunting at each other! I know they still do down the road, but not here!

That one from @Nolan is one of the better mock ups I’ve seen, if a little bit Stoke around the edges. But, Imo, it’s not as good as the current badge.  There’s nothing wrong with changing the badge, but one would hope that if/when it happens, you get something better as a result. To date I’m yet to see any mock up that I prefer to what we already have.

As I’ve said in here, of various polls down the recent years across fans of other clubs and independent reporters, the Saints badge often comes out towards the top of the more popular ones. So, personally, I don’t see an immediate rush to change it.  The club already made a change from the initial 1974 badge to what we have now, changing the ball for copyright purposes. We also changed it slightly in 2010 for the 125 year anniversary (maybe also in 1985 for the centenary year), so there have been mods made since this one came about.

A lot of the badge redesigns you see over the past 10 or 20 years seem to be an effort to modernise what looks like an outdated or over complicated / busy design. Ones like Arsenal, Everton, Leeds 🤣 were pretty awful and caused fan backlash (and in the case of the latter two, the badges were rescinded). Some others like QPR, Man City, Palace were an improvement. So, there’s nothing to say we couldn’t have a better badge from a change. I just haven’t yet seen a proposed design that I prefer, and the simplicity of the current design negates a need to declutter it.

The only problem I've got with the present badge is the modern bits.

Prefer the halo to be white, the waves to be the colour of the sea and to have an older looking ball!

There seems to be a lot of media going out with just the silhouette of the badge this season.

I wonder if this is a primer for a change where the silhouette is identifiable (and unique enough for a TM) but with the internal aspects of the badge changed.

I think the silhouette looks a bit "Handsome Pete" from the Simpsons: Hat, Hair sticking out, big mouth of teeth a the bottom, you just need to draw eyes, nose, teeth and ears. 😁

Now i'm no expert but did that in about half hour using others images and paint.

If the club did that then i'd be happy!

This!

Correct.

Im sure I’ve said this before, probably on this thread. I’m not beholden to our badge, but any move needs to be one for the better. And through all contributions that people make, I have yet to see one that is better than the one we’ve got.

Various online polls are done on club badges and ours regularly features higher up in the charts.  If someone puts out a mock of a new one that is brilliant then, yes, let’s talk about changing. So the challenge is on those wanting a change to come up with better. Not seen that yet.

I think our badge is nice as it is. If it was to be updated I personally would just like it to be the ball with halo, 1885 mayb in the ball and the red and white scarf underneath (that’s red and white to the guy that designed our kit) and Southampton fc in black mayb incorporated in the white sections of the scarf. If anyone can do a mock up?

but thats the point.

I didn't ask the club to start featuring the crest as it is in the Bottom right hand corner below, but its worth noticing.

Could argue that the massive, normal crest in the middle is more noticeable.

The bottom right is just general marketing (no different to the monochrome version we've had in recent years). I doubt there's any truth in the conspiracy that this is the precursor to change.

What would we change it to and why?

Our badge is full of history, it tells a story and as someone else said, it stands out amongst others and is instantly recognisable. It’s gone through several ‘tweaks’ over the years, but ultimately I think it passes the test of time and is still relevant.

I wouldn't want a brand new crest however I wouldn't mind tweaking it. Maybe making the football more modern as previously, changing the font on Southampton

I can honestly say that, as an impressionable kid in the early 90's, who wasn't local to the area, our badge was one of the things that enticed me to start supporting Saints.

It's a fantastic design and the fact we're using a silhouette of it at times kind of emphasizes that it's both iconic and timeless.

Anyone looking to meddle with it should be made to bend over and take a hot crumpet from behind without blubbing.

we should probably include something rainbow in there. Perhaps change the red and white scarf to a rainbow one and change the colours of the city flower to one white, one black and one brown to represent the diverse ethnic population of our fine city.
