Jose Fonte

he left for the money pure and simple

i'm guessing here, but I do reckon the club did offer him a contract extension, but he probably wanted £80k whereas we offered something far less, and the Utd rumours clearly made him think he was far better than he genuinely is

and then obviously, he was never gonna say to WHU fans, 'I am here for the cash', thus used family as an excuse.

Good luck to him in China, can't say I'm not surprised it didn't work out for him at WHU.

I was told, from a very good authority, that he was offered closer to £100k per week, but wanted a longer term deal that we wouldn't offer.

I think we got the best of him, and probably sold him at the right time. Good business again. We've never been the same since the Fonte/VVD partnership though.

Everyone who partnered him at saints looked better than they actually were, imho. One of the players I was saddest to lose.

But we lost him at the right time, his day was done and it gave Jack his chance which he took.People say he was a leader but in the end was a trouble maker, such a shame

Literally the most overrated Saints player ever. Class in League One. But in the PL he always had a quality partner; Lovren, Toby, VVD.

If Yoshida made the mistakes that Fonte has made he'd be lynched but when Fonte got caught in possession leading to a goal or chance, it'd be overlooked for some reason. Probably because he was with us in League One and we had a sentimental attachment to him.

Not a bad player by any means and he was a good servant to us however he's nowhere near as great as everyone makes him out to be.

He was so consistant for us over many years and made a step down to come to us originally with Pardew. Shame it ended like it did, but clearly events have shown he was/ about to become, past his best.

And now takes a further step down to the Chinese league.

The man’s selflessness knows no bounds. Wish more players weren’t about chasing the money.

More importantly, I wish our owners and directors weren't just about chasing money for themselves. The owners and directors at most of our rivals are more interested in their football team doing well.

He could have retired here and been a legend.

Ultimately he thought he was bigger than the club. Shame that he turned out to be a bit of a tit.

Agree, but for some complete knobheadedness on Fonte's part he might still have been with us, probably still playing a role.

Incredible how things turned sour so quickly after his Euro 2016 success.

27 caps for Portugal and a European Championship winner's medal make him one of the most successful players on the international stage in the club's history. He came back, after many years' loyal service to the club, expecting a hero's welcome, and perhaps a final pay increase, only to find the Club completely ignoring him and that Les had already decided to cash in on him. He was not desperate to leave. But, the club was keen to cash in on the last chance to get a transfer fee for a player in his 30s, the same as they did for Lambert. Perhaps in the hardheaded world of football business, they were right to do so as he was coming towards the end of his career but he was not sold because of his "knpbheadedness". The "Billy big boll_ks" quote, which was bandied about sounded like it came staright out of Les Reed's mouth, and Les knows some of our fans fall for those PR 'leaks' about players about to be sold, hook, line and sinker, every time.

Don't underestimate the Chinese League. I watch a lot of it and it's exciting, fast paced and there are a lot of decent players there. There's a lot of crap, sure, but it's not a waste of space league. The defending is the worst aspect of the league so Jose will probably enjoy being one of the better players there, so that's fair enough. Oh and the money will be a nice bonus for him I suppose.

Can't blame him for this move one bit. The move to West Ham was weird though.

Oh, and Dalian is a nice coastal city.

I think he was quite keen to leave for a better payday , he had been showing signs of being past his best for a while and was getting away with alot of fouls/penalty shouts etc . At WH he showed again he was well past his best and has left early for a final payday in China. Lambert was also past his best but I would have been happy for him to stay as a sub instead of failing at several other clubs before disappearing .

I doubt he's really that bothered, he's only there for one reason and it's not the football. Don't get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with chasing the money, when you get to his age as a footballer the end comes fast, as he's probably found out over the last 18 months or so.

Great player for us - I wish him no ill.

This is nonsense. If we were so keen to cash in on him and sell him why didn't we do so in July when he wanted to go and his value was high post Euros win? Instead we offered him a new contract. Nonsense on stilts.

Fonte is having a laugh

Contract ‘terminated’ in China but thinks he’s still Premier League..

Ummmmm interesting ....

Must have spent too much time in Lovrens company!!

As mentioned before, 5 years ago Fonte was about to become a bench warmer under Pochettino, But Yoshida picked up an injury in the Confederations Cup, Jose saw the writing on the wall and upped his game and kept Yoshida out. Most players when asked who was the physically fittest player in the club prior to the Euros every single one said Fonte, and for his age his conditioning was exceptional. But taking sentiment out of it, it was like the Euros were his pinnacle, probably due to the greedy contract negotiations, he was making howlers that were worse (as other have already said) than minor ones Yoshida was getting absolutely slaughtered for, any sane fan could see the flame was dimming..............and when he got to WHU many on here were mocking what he was doing with us and getting slack for.

He served us very well, but modern day football has no time for sentiment: unless you are 5-0 up with 5 minutes to play.

And Ronaldo!

See the “Macaronis” (thanks Das Boot for that handle) in the Fiat factory are threatening to to go on strike, because the Angnelli family who own Juve and Fiat Group have piddled £100m away on him, and they have been working under austere conditions in the car factory.

Still good enough for Portugal??

Who have two CBs aged over 34 and no-one looking likely to replace them, rather than a production line of viable replacements. It's not like they can sign someone and are showing all the signs of not replacing their title winners with fresher players, like every other failing championship-winning side.

Fonte was a liability our first season back - remember a particularly egregious howler for Wigan's second when they schooled us at home soon after we came up. He got better, but the idea that he made the likes of VVD, Toby and even Lovren look better than they were is just mental.

Moreover, during his last full season with us, but for a few very generous refereeing decisions, I think he'd probably have set a single season record for penalties given away. He led a very charmed life during that period from what I remember.

Poor old dirk, He’s been spouting this sh*te on TUI got years. Everyone laughs at him so now I guess he thinks he’ll get more of a sympathetic ear on here. He claims Every player that left was forced out against their will, they all wanted to say it was evil, scheming Les who was desperate to sell every player the first offer he got. Every player who plays for us is useless until they leave then they become wonderful, he’s even written players off before they’ve started Yet despite appearing to hate everything and everyone at the club he claims to be a massive saints fan, season ticket holder for years and goes to every game.

There's a reason why our fans can't stand Lovren, Lallana and Fonte. There's a way of doing things and they did it wrong. lallana was the worst of them all as well.

Really? Fonte wanted a contract extension to see him through to retirement at the club. He also asked for a pay rise to match his expectations as a European champion. Its been made clear by several parties that he wasn't demanding the earth, or even near the club's top earners.

In response, the club (Les Read et al) falsely leaked that he had handed in a transfer request and forced him out of the club. He didn't want to leave the club but he even ended up on a reduced wage at a club he didn't want to be at. Yeah, he could have handled himself a bit better and obviously regrets it now. But the bloke should frankly be a club hero. You are living in a parallel universe to me if you think someone who could arguably have gone on the banner should be held in the same disdain as Llama boy and Lovren.

At the end of the day, Rickie Lambert is loved by the fans despite being one of the first ones out the door to join Liverpool and get some more Wonga for his retirement. Fonte wanted to stay at the club and asked for a pay rise (to match his perceived ability) and a contract extension to see out his career at the club.... I mean, who doesn't ask for a payrise when they've done well at work... he didn't ask to leave but he was deceitfully forced out of the club anyway. At the very least, those two players should be viewed in a very similar way by the fans.... and none of us begrudge Rickie do we?

Its sad that some of our fans have this level of disdain towards Fonte. He was a pivotal club servant who moved down a division to join saints, scored the crucial winning goal at Brighton, and who stayed with us for years becoming club captain. :mcinnes:

He was a player who lived and breathed Saints whilst he was here and obviously still cares for the club.
