eurosaint Posted 14 January, 2009 Share Posted 14 January, 2009 McG has good technical ability (he can trap a ball, he can turn, he looks up before releasing the ball, he takes up good positions etc..) and I do believe that he can make a higher grade than the CCC ! He does appear to lack confidence at times and (perhaps because of his natural gait) sometimes looks like he is not really trying nor is interested ! Right now he is playing in an ever changing and unsuccessful, young team which surely cannot help him progress as quickly as if he were playing with a top side ! Accepting (as I do) that he is underachieving at the moment, I am still not surprised to see him touted as one of the up and coming talents of the future and reckon that we should not underestimate his potential ! IMHO he might well become better than Blackstock, Best, Davies and even Jones but I suppose that only time will tell in the end !!

OldNick Posted 14 January, 2009 Share Posted 14 January, 2009 Comments like that really annoyed me. Why should people have commented on KD being poor at times last season and the season before?? He was. He was half the keeper he's been this season. It's fantastic that he's proved himself this year, but even he's admitted he wasn't at his best before that. Christ, he'd lost his place by the end of both these seasons, but I doubt that will happen this time. We'd likely have been down without Richard Wright last season, and in the playoffs year Kelvin was never a safe pair of hands. Somehow a few people on here think current form erradicates all previous seasons. I like Kelvin, he's been excellent this season and I hope it continues, but that doesn't rewrite history and mean he was brilliant from the start. The only thing to learn from it is perhaps people should talk about form and make criticism more short term, ie. that player is playing badly, rather than that player IS bad. That's why for me, DMG has played badly for much of this season, but looks a little improved recently, and might learn from Saga. He'll get at least 13 or 14 goals I imagine, given he's already got 9, so that's not a bad start for a "poor season". you are right to a degree.I defended KD because the abuse given was unfair and many just wouldnt credit with any quality. He has made many change their minds and now any mistake is not highlighted like it was. DMG is alos getting unfair stick in the same the way and I will put up reasons to argue against unfair criticism
1965onwards Posted 14 January, 2009 Share Posted 14 January, 2009 You have hit the nail on the head Adrian. His inability to strike the ball properly tells you that he will never be above what he is now,an average CCC or lower striker. He will not improve such an important basic skill at his age, should already have it. I have never seen such a poor striker of a ball, and Lallana is not much better.Something seriously gone wrong in our youth coaching IMO.

What a load of non sense, he can strike the ball, the shot that crashed off the bar v Reading ? was a superb attempt his goal at Exeter was also a fantastic shot. There are others as well but I cant list them all. He is a young player and the constant whining from people old enough to know better astounds me. Then he's not watching the ball as he strikes it, and he's not keeping his knee over the ball either. For me, he doesn't do enough movement to pull the opposition defence out of shape. There's too much hands on hips and drooped shoulders and he's flat-footed most of the time. Watching players like Earnshaw and Doyle recently should have been a lesson to him. They covered every blade of grass.
OldNick Posted 15 January, 2009 Share Posted 15 January, 2009 They covered every blade of grass.that reminds me of something eother Dave Jones or WGS said about 1 of our players... he covered every blade of grass because his first touch was so poor. Doyle and Earnshaw are what age? Earnshaw is not a good example for a footballer to be set to.

That's what pulls the opposition players around and disrupts their shape. It makes space for other players to run into... ah, I see our problem here. I thought that the younger you were, the more you could run about? Their age is not important, it's the off-the-ball running that McGoldrick could learn from. You can't just hang around and hope that the ball will come to you.

Earnshaw IMO is not a team player and so I dont see him as a run till his boots are worn through. It takes all types and to be fair you dont half expect a lot. You want the worlds most all round striker in a bottom half CCC team. If DMG was that good at the moment he'd be at a top PL side.It will come but sadly he will have been sold before we see the real finished product. SaintDonkey Posted 15 January, 2009 Author Share Posted 15 January, 2009 Fantastic evidence of the quality of reporting at the Times. http://soccerlens.com/the-curious-case-of-masal-bugduv/20613/ The player they put at number 30 doesn't exist! (not THE) Kevin Moore Posted 15 January, 2009 Share Posted 15 January, 2009 But it was on the basis of how good he was percieved to be, that we loaned out all 3 of Rasiak, John and Saganowski and only got in younger even less experienced players (sh!t ones at that) to help him lead the attack. I look at Leicester and Matty Fryatt and how many goals he is knocking in. Now, I accept he is a year older than DMcG and is playing for a team full of confidence and against League 1 defences but he really does looks a player that could cut it at a higher level. I,m afraid I can't see it with DMcG but I hope he proves me wrong. The same Matty Fryatt who was (a year ago) not scoring many goals for Leicester in the Championship you mean? Totton Red Posted 15 January, 2009 Share Posted 15 January, 2009 Remember reading in the Times years (and years) ago, five to watch for the future and Matt Oakley was listed. Many very good young players struggle to live up to their early potential.
