The9 Posted 8 June, 2017 Share Posted 8 June, 2017 Nice analytical article here about Premier League teams rotating their players. http://eightyfivepoints.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/tinker-tailor-mould-side-squad-rotation.html?m=1 Saints barely get a mention, but it does contain this helpful diagram by way of showing changes per game. That should at least answer whether we rotated more than other Premier League sides in Europe in the top 6 which someone was asking before. Also, if we could just leave Puel out of the discussion here, there are plenty of other places to bang on about him. Also an article about the impact of playing in Europe on overall points total here (which links to studies showing there's not an obvious short term effect on surrounding matches but there is definitely one from playing more games). http://eightyfivepoints.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/playing-in-europe-does-affect-domestic.html?m=
Donatello Posted 8 June, 2017 Share Posted 8 June, 2017 (edited) If anything I find this even more surprising/concerning given that this assessment doesn't factor in why we were rotating...I.e. Europe/cup games. It's purely a study of EPL games....which you would imagine would demonstrate Puel kept an unchanged line-up for league games, but evidently not. Anyway, I don't think it demonstrates a stable first team approach. United and City aside (whom have squad depth), the teams which changed the most, seem to be teams which struggled the most. Chez Posted 8 June, 2017 Share Posted 8 June, 2017 team loses you change it. Team wins you keep it the same. Players get injured you change it. New manager you change it. Not always rotation in the strictest sense, which is to keep players fresh. Personally I thought rotation made total and utter sense, but it didn't help the side. Kingsbridge Saint Posted 9 June, 2017 Share Posted 9 June, 2017 The best defence of a rotation policy is a strong end to the season compared to those that didn't rotate. We well and truly stuffed that one. Rotation produced no tangible benefits, none. Did the rotations impede our progression to a settled pattern of play - definitely. Given that the settled pattern of play we were striving for was a crock of dung to start with small wonder we were all over the place for most of the season. At least the players will look and feel great playing beach volleyball over the summer.
