Saints get 122m from Premier League

This is one of the reasons that transfer fees and wages are going to go through the roof this summer. Buyers have more money than ever, and sellers are less desperate for the money and in more of a position to either say no or demand ridiculous fees. Makes me hope that Saints keep their powder dry for a bit if they must sell, just to see what happens in the market.

The Premier League has lost the plot. Clubs should be slashing season ticket prices, all ticket prices, dramatically. But I won't hold my breath.

And £70 million for Virgil? Sod that, I just want to see him in a Saints shirt next season.

Exactly. The income from the general fan is minimal - what about £10m from season ticket sales and £8m from non ST attendance? There's no excuse for the Premier League not to force clubs to use some of the obscene amount of TV money to cut ticket prices further. It's small fry for the clubs, but getting more/too expensive for most normal people to attend!

Given we#ve got the 8th highest wages, getting the 8th highest money is pretty much what we need to be doing at minimum.

Alan Shearer said on MOTD after the highlights of our final match of the season, "8th is about where they should be."

We only have the 11th biggest average home gate in the Premier League but that is partly because of our limited capacity. With a capacity of around 38,000, we'd probably get the 8th biggest gates.

Historically, we are a massively underachieving club though. We have had many long spells below 8th place but very few above it. And, of course, just 1 trophy is scant reward for 40 seasons in the top flight, 14 major semi-finals and 6 finals. We have probably been held back by the modest ambitions of both our fans and our owners. We are an 'ever so umble' lot. We think we know our place but in reality we don't. It's higher than most of our fans think. Alan Shearer has got it about right.

Does anyone know if the figures in brackets are just televised PL games or also include televised domestic cups games too? Mad if the former, only 9 of Liverpool's 38 matches weren't live on TV last season?!

Just league.

Surprised its as many as 9. Thought all their games were shown live, otherwise the Scouse commentators/pundits would have nothing to talk about.

That's probably why there hasn't been much transfer activity so far - clubs don't want to pay hugely inflated fees, nor do sellers want to let players go for sums that by August look low. Though having said that, a lot of deals were done last year by clubs who wanted to get players in before the prices go up.

It's also why Saints tied a load of players up on bigger money new deals last year, the remaining contract is one of the biggest factors in the transfer fee.

They're Premier League figures, they'll be Premier League games only.

We usually sell early and buy late in the transfer window. Whether this is because we don't have replacements lined up or it's an attempt to save a bit on wages, it costs us millions because, as you've noted, transfer fees rise quite rapidly during the summer. It also means that the new players rarely have much pre-season preparation so they start the season unfit and are often not even ready to play until weeks or even months into the season.

I'm sure the club will have worked out the optimum time to do their business relating to wages and fees, they're into so much detail with everything else it would be entirely out of character for them not to. It's also very difficult to establish if transfer fees rise during the summer (given that you have to assume what price a player would sell for at a time they aren't sold), but it's not difficult to imagine them rising compared to last year given that all of the clubs involved have tens of millions of pounds more than this time a year ago.

Probably 8th is about right but I'd reckon most people would have been happier if we were a bit closer to the 5th/6th in points, having a go for Europe and falling a little short is a lot better IMO than stumbling your way to 8th because 12 clubs just happened to be a lot crapper than you.

Plus overachieving is a thing, wouldn't take much to push us to challenging for 4th, 5th, 6th if we had some luck with injuries, as we saw last year.
