10 year plan for St Mary's stadium

This is probably just concept work and anyway amounts to little more than an overdue refurb of the hospitality product.

If this is actually the genuine 10 year plan for st marys then it shows categorically that the club has zero interest in expanding the ground, which in my view is absolutely right. 32k is more than enough, and from a business perspective, much better to be selling out every week than getting 34k in a 40k stadium.

Interesting but not that exciting for the majority of fans.

Something needs to be done about the atmosphere. Currently we have 3 singing sections. Itchen north, Northam and kingsland north. Often completely disjointed. The whole lot should be moved to the Chapel imo (as away fans can't be moved). With safe standing ideally.

Agreed. But we don't need to spend millions to sort that out. It's nothing Gareth Malone couldn't fix.

I'd like to see some nice padded seats in the Kingsland premium areas, the same as in the Itchen and a simple mod - let's face it the ticket price is the same!

Regarding the hospitality suites I can understand why the club would want to improve the areas, but it doesn't really affect me so doesn't really float my boat. I agree with Golden Balls - the atmosphere is overdue consideration, but I would find a way of diluting the away support by splitting them on a corner - best bet would be moving them to the Kingsland/Northam corner, thereby combining the Northam home support with the Itchen North.

Good idea, but aren't the Itchen seats wider?

I've got no problem with it either as long as the club isn't leveraged up to the eyeballs in debt to pay for it.

States the overall cost is just over £3million, doesn't it? Seems to me that should be easy to cover without getting into debt considering we make over £100million a season just from being in the league.

Is there a link to somewhere that has all these plans? I'm assuming this is what Landers involvement was going to be, contracted to develop the stadium and surrounding area, as opposed to buying out the club?

Thirteen of last seasons premier league clubs have major stadium expansions plans in the offing, with the aim of drastically improving income generation flows. Southampton one of seven including the three relegated sides, Arsenal and Wham who no major plans in the offing. If we are not careful we are going to get left behind in the FFP stakes........

I'm not sure that teams like Palace, Watford, WBA, Stoke , Leicester or even Bournemouth have the demand any more than us. They are all however pushing ahead with major expansions in the hope of growing that demand.........

What are Leicester doing then? There was a bit of chat about them expanding before they won the League but I don't think they've actually done anything. Hardly pushing ahead.

And all those other clubs have smaller attendances/capacity than we do.

WE'RE GETTING LEFT BEHIND!! LEFT BEHIND I TELLS YA!!

In a few years, hopefully, if things carry on as they are, maybe West Brom might expand their ground to maybe, hopefully 30,000.

In three or four or five years they'll start thinking about it.

Pushing ahead they are. We're getting left behind.

Palace tied up in red tape and surrounding landowners who are thwarting them pushing ahead to expand to 32,000.

But they will leave us behind when that's built after countless years of planning wrangling no doubt about that.

What about leicester, surely they must be pushing on with a Major Expansion? Oh, hold on a minute

That was the only one I didnt need to google. They bailed on their plans when they realised that even winning the flipping league doesn't really change anything with regard to core demand.

No planning permission, no nothing.

It can't be! You're making it all up, we're doomed and getting left behind by them all:lol:

Stoke are doing it. They are pushing ahead. They are doing it now. THEY ARE EXPANDING. NOW.

Next season they will have a capacity of THIRTY THOUSAND. FUUUUUU CCKKKKK.

We are getting left behind.

According to the Stoke fan I chatted to at the last game they are only filling that corner in to stop the wind.

Seriously just FO.

It is pathetic how you keep bringing up the same nonsense time after time, even though it has been refuted and you ignore it and bring it up again. That thread was based at a time when Cortese was in charge, the management structure changed so the development was affected. It is pathetic the way you keep dragging this up time after time even though all this has been pointed out to you time after time.

:mcinnes:

That doesn't make me "Mr Wrong" as you pathetically and childishly like to claim. All I did was report what at the time looked to be the club managements plans. But things change, that doesn't mean I was "wrong".

So grow up ffs!

Your words.

"I expect Southampton to announce either an expansion of St Mary's or a relocation to a new stadium relatively soon."

"Southampton won't be able to do any major work during the summer of 2015 as it hosting Rugby World Cup games. So given the planning application length and the length of construction we might see work over 2013 and 2014 perhaps?"

Cortese was still here during 2013 and nothing happened.

Bournemouth expanding to 14k capacity any year now. How we will compete with that I'll never know.

http://mobile.afcb.co.uk/news/article/south-stand-afc-bournemouth-stadium-expansion-plans-3012635.aspx

I read an article in a magazine called "Construction News" that gave detailed plans for stadium expansion of thirteen EPL clubs (Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City, Liverpool, ManU, Everton, WBA, Leicester, Stoke, Bournemouth, Watford, Palace and Swansea), and a number of clubs in the lower leagues. The gist of the article was of a stadium construction boom, to enable the clubs to grow their income streams whilst adhering to the principals of FFP. Sorry unable to post a link to the article. You might scoff but with the so called smaller clubs all pushing their capacities to around the 32k mark, and the likes of of Spurs and Everton moving to huge new stadiums, we are standing still. Whereas in 2001 when SMS was first opened Saints had one of the larger stadiums in the PL, in a few years we will have one of the smallest!

This is partly true. They hope to fill in all the corners but are starting with the corner that the wind tends to whip through first.

Stoke understand that bar the really big matches they are probably at max capacity for home fans which is why they are increasing the away allocation next season.

Except we won't have one of the smallest, will we? All those clubs that are mentioned are looking at 30k or so and some is vague, platitude-heavy non-commitment. In the case of WBA its been kicked so far into the long grass it's embarrassing.

And Leicester ain't doing anything, regardless what Construction News make out.

For completeness, let's do Swansea - yep, could be 33k, which is marginally bigger than us but the council, not the club will own the ground, which will significantly reduce the financial return. And they've done Jack so far, so hardly leaving us behind just yet.

Everton we know about but all the other CL clubs are irrelevant to us. Spurs have waiting lists a mile long. They have gigantic unmet demand. We simply don't.

We are not getting left behind and we have a stadium perfectly suitable for its purpose.

So it appears that many clubs will eventually have an attendance similar to ours and the top clubs with ambition will have double the amount going through the turnstiles, the league will be split in two permanently when that happens. The extra income gained from that, and massive crowds will be huge selling points for the clubs with a vision. We'll forever be treading water when that happens.

The site which RMC are on can be bought for 15 mil ....the industrial estate to thesouth can also be purchased from the freeholder , the gas site already has an agreement to pass to the club I cant remember what year that happens so the land around the stadium can be sucked up no issues . Will happen one day

Charlie,

Interesting

Who is marketing the RMC site?

I actually thought RMC had ceased to exist. Perhaps bought out by Cemex

Do they hold the freehold of the site (adjacent to Baltic Wharf?)

I thought the City Council owned most/all the freehold along the west side of the Itchen and the area fell into their regeneration plans which hopefully would benefit the football club

A friend who works at a very senior level in Cemex uk, laughed when I mentioned that Saints could possibly purchase the site. It's not going to happen for the foreseeable future, due to logistics (deep water docking etc) challenges of re-siting the business to a suitable site elsewhere within the city.

Cemex are an utter turd of a company. I do know however that they would sell anything at a price to get cash back to Mexico.

It may not be for sale but it certainly has a price.

This makes sense

I doubt if the aggregate/cement/scrap wharves along the Itchen will be moved until such time as ABP's plans for a renewed shot at Dibden Bay has been played out - perhaps in 10 years

  • 5 months later...
Crystal Palace announce plans to increase capacity by 8,000 and other improvements costing circa £100m...

[video=youtube;AUnWAL-ty4U]

What does that bring capacity to, pal? 33,000?

It’s almost as if someone, somewhere has decided it’s not commercially feasible to expand any further. Heaven forbid.

I look at Palace...8k seats for £100m. I then look at SMS, which while it might be identikit, was built at a very decent price. No idea what the cost of adding an upper tier is, but as it has already been "built in" that expansion is an easy-ish exercise, then I cannot imagine that it would be too much.

Agree with the 'decent price' comment

Reportedly £33m

Ok pretty basic in design but brought us into the modern era at a cost which would probably be at least double now

Loads of designs were looked at over the years, but the site was just too small.

Also looked at a number of alternative sites in/around the city

Main options were the current West Quay site (25,000 capacity just after the 76 Cup win) and the site off Stoneham Lane (also 25k capacity)

I think you will find that the Toys r Us site was earmarked for about 50,000. The Dell still held 30, 000 at that time.

"Champions League ready by 2021"...interesting.

So that's the boardrooms and hospitality rooms sorted then.

Upgrading the west stand will be sometime at a very distant future date.

So don't be in hurry to know about Northam and Itchen.
