One of the voices of British sport over the last 40 years RIP. Loved Quizball as a kid. Never sure if the great J Arlott was a saints or token Hampshireman though.

John Arlott was never a token Hampshireman - born and raised in Basingstoke, he had a proper 'ampshire accent.

David Vine will be sorely missed, I can hardly believe he retired in 2000. He was on the telly for as long as I can remember.

Quiz Ball, bloody hell had forgotten that. Never did like Gordon Jackson :) There really are some saddos out there, who would post all the results of Quiz Ball on the web? FFS get a life (but thanks anyway, found it quite interesting, I'll get my duffle coat now).

Was my favourite BBC sports presenter; I credit Ski Sunday and Winter Olympic coverage under his warm dulcet tones for getting me into skiing and winter sports.

Arlott born and bred in Hampshire was originally a Policeman in Basingstoke I think

Used to live in Alresford before moving to the Channel Isles

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear in my earlier post. I am fully aware of Arlott's biographical details. Just that as probably the best known Hampshireman at the time was he on Quizball as a Saints supporter or for his Hampshire rather than Saints connections.

Have to be so careful on here sometimes.

John Arlott actually supported Reading. I guess they struggled to find a celebrity who was a real Saints supporter in that era.

Who would today's celebrity be I wonder?

ditto - and specifically those OLD "pre-shops" being open wet & cold Sunday afternoons in the winter - Ski Sunday was a ray of light and yes in the days when my knees still worked he more than any drove me to discover the joy and freedom of skiing
