Dusic Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Obviously very important to the club to stay in the top division of PL2 as since the status became uncertain the team has been filled with more and more first team squad members, albeit with little success. Tonight we face Man City with Hassen, McQueen, Gardos, Pied, Targett, Reed, Austin and likely others who have featured in the first team setup this season. Big game. Bit embarassing for the Academy if we get relegated as well as being pretty dire in the U18 league too. Plus knock on impact that our young players and fringe squad members play poorer opposition next season. Hardly good prep for their first team chances.
Window Cleaner Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Have they gone downhill of late then? Thought we started the U23 season in quite a successful manner.
Saint_clark Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Our development teams have been pretty unsuccessful for years now. It's really not that big of a problem - at that level you're trying to develop individual talent, it really doesn't matter how well they work as a team given that some of them will be very talented and some will be sh*te.

I think it's more that they insist on playing the year below in each team. So the U23 is full of the U18 and the U18 full of the U16 etc. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure that's what I read!?

Then again, I say the word tinpot but I remember us celebrating winning the u23 PL Cup quite rather heavily a year or two ago!
striker Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 We better win with Austin, Pied, Targett, Reed, and McQueen out there.
beatlesaint Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 We better win with Austin, Pied, Targett, Reed, and McQueen out there. never mind them, the goal Nathan Tella has scored is magnificent !
simo Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Haven't Chelsea won the youth cup 4 years on the trott or something? Means nothing if they don't get to play for the first team imo
Lukee Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 It's live on Man City's facebook page- https://www.facebook.com/mancity/
Saint Albert Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 ... That was a nifty goal by Tella. He brought the ball in all the way from the half way line. Not the best defending but still... ....1-2 now..

beatlesaint Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Not the first time they have thrown away a lead late on, a two goal one at that.
Heisenberg Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Didn't we win the league in Cortese`s final season? Bet he looks at us now and thinks
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 So do we go down to the Championship 2 or something? Our lads play against other Academy teams who aren't deemed as good as those in the first division. All those who say the point of U23 games is to develop players rather than win are right. But the issue is that players develop quicker when they play at a higher level and that is how you find out about their ceiling. Our kids won't have that opportunity within their own age group now and that is a blow. So this relegation really is bad news, and its also not a very good look for the Academy in general.
JRM Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Will Jaidi get the sack for this? It's a weird level of football , during our Europa league run we had most of the u23s playing with the 1st team squad and u18s were playing the u23 games. We've also had injured players put into u23 games to gain fitness. Hopefully we'll still be allowed to compete in the checkatrade trophy.
Saints foreva Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 So was koeman right about academy This will get nibbles.
The Cat Posted 5 May, 2017 Posted 5 May, 2017 Didn't we win the league in Cortese`s final season? Bet he looks at us now and thinks **** off. Just **** off. Anyway we won the Premier League cup which is not the league but a cup. Gallagher scored the winner against Blackburn when we were down to 10 men but you knew all that and was just being a massive **** as normal.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 6 May, 2017 Posted 6 May, 2017 Will Jaidi get the sack for this? Isn't Jaidi just the assistant to Martin Hunter?
OldNick Posted 6 May, 2017 Posted 6 May, 2017 Les Reeds toy has lost its wheels it seems. With all these things it is the quality of the material you put in to get a quality one at the end.I assume our scouts are not quite as good as they used to be

Hunter has been struggling for a couple of years and Fleming has never been good enough. The Academy coaching at the top end needs a restructure.

Window Cleaner Posted 8 May, 2017 Posted 8 May, 2017 Doesn't look like that there any Sainsts players at all in the England U20 group for the WC of the category. That's a bit unusual isn't it ? Has the conveyor belt just stopped or is it that they're not getting first team games and are thus less on show?
