@JWTelegraph: Claude Puel sacked after it was concluded #saintsfc players/fans not sufficiently with him. Thomas Tuchel on shortlist but there are others

The question is, are we on Thomas Tuchel's shortlist?

They will be keen to downplay Tuchel a bit unless it is definitely him, otherwise no other candidates will stand a chance with the fans...

I hope that the recruitment team does not spend the next few weeks trying to find a manger who exactly fits their long list of criteria, aligns with the minutiae of the club's footballing and human resources philosophies and ticks every single little box in their recruitment chart. Puel ticked every one of their boxes, looked alright on paper and as it turns out alienated a significant chunk of the players, along with a portion of the fanbase.

Quit fannying about and sign the best manager available.

Les and co. might be wary of a Tuchel appointment if they are looking for managerial stability since a Poch/Koeman stepping stone outcome would be likely.

Ranieri just got a job at Nantes! Sloppy indeed.

Wilson mentions "other German options". Who's that guy in his 20s?

Anything other than German and I'll be disappointed apart save Felix Magath. Better not be English - they are spent as managers and we need verve, mystery and stubble. As long as the efficient German isn't too excitable and giggly as that can get annoying.

But will perpetuate the 'how we do it every season..?' pundit line that shows Les is great light as the genius mastermind behind the club's succession planning. 2 years is the average these days.

Yes, quite so. And I'd take another 2 years or so of the benefits a high profile manager like Tuchel would bring, Let's hope Les thinks so too. Perhaps the whole idea of "managerial stability" is a fanciful dream of the past - just like the notion of the "loyal" player is more likely a player without any better offers.

Perhaps the new takeover company want a high profile manager as one of the conditions to take over the club.

This Tuchel bloke is never a Reed appointment but he might not have a choice.

The more I think about it, the more Klinsmann fits the bill IMO. Doesn't he tick most boxes....?

- a German manager other than Tuchel (as hinted in the Wilson article)? tick

- available? tick

- high profile? tick

- could persuade the likes of VvD and Bertrand to stay? tick

- more charismatic than Puel? tick

- european tournament experience? tick

- international experience? tick

- attacking style? tick

- good at bringing through younger players? not sure, but don't see why not

"They also looked at Roger Schmidt but he has now taken a job in China, as well as other German options, although those candidates do not include Jurgen Klinsmann or David Wagner."

Bugger.

Unless its a smokescreen of course... :)

What would be the reasons for Klinsmann not matching our criteria I wonder?

Basically the opposite of Puel then.

I have no problem being used as a stepping stone as that means we've done very well as a club in the meantime. The alternative is mediocrity where you don't do well enough for them to move on.

He's rubbish as a coach. That would be the first one that comes to mind.

If Sean Dyche wasn't ginger and was foreign no doubt people will be fawning over him. I quite like him and would be interesting to see how he would do at a bigger club.

Worth having a look back at last summer when Puel was appointed and what Les said.

"When managers are appointed usually they want lots of changes. They want to bring their own staff, they want money to spend. If you go down that route you are putting everything you have built at risk."

That has to impact who we will bring in and one the reason Puel was appointed. Would Tuchel work under those conditions? His falling out with the Dortmund board suggests not.
