The songs write themselves.

Previously linked with Norwich and Reading. Unusual for Arsenal to get rid of their youth - they usually want to nurture it. Preparing for life without Wenger?

Or maybe he thought we have a good track record of bringing players through so maybe he made the decision to ply his trade here.

Maybe he rejected Arsenal rather than Arsenal rejecting him.

Not sure this can be right as the report seems clear that he was told he would not be offered a professional contract at Arsenal. More likely our assessment of his promise is different to theirs. If he turns out to be of professional standard it will be Arsenal's mistake to have let him go but Saints have also made similar mistakes in the past, as have most clubs. This isn't a case of taking another club's cast off, but of possibly seeing potential that another club has missed.

He would have been the trialist in the recent u18 match against Brighton then.

One of the weird phrases that can have the same inferred meaning any which way the words are placed. Saturday night...bugger

Who, in your opinion, is the best player we've released thinking they wouldn't make the grade...?

There's not many we've released that have gone on to prove the club wrong. I never understood Tim Sparv being let good and 49 caps for Finland suggests he's a decent player still. Hardly a Pogba or Michael Keane type error though.

Word has it that Wenger has signed another 2 year contract and is having a summer clear out with an expected minimum 6 new players coming so no room for youngsters in the next 2 years

Can we sign Ox back, please?

Its an interesting one - at 19 you want to be playing mor ethan 2 games a year and at Arsenal its unlikely he will. Just have to look at how incredibly well Rashford burst on to the scene and how many games he gets at the moment. Probably should be off in championship on loan really but can see why at 19 he may feel hes better off elsewhere

Dennis Wise

Gareth Southgate

Kevin Phillips

Were all let go as kids by Saints.

Currently playing in the Premier League we released Ings and Mings.

In the Championship Lukas Jutkiewicz, prob more but can't think of any at the mo

Nathan Dyer?

How does he meet the criteria of the question?

Dyer wasn't released as a kid in the academy "thinking they wouldn't make the grade", Saints sold him during the admin period when he was 21 years old to raise cash.

Was Southgate at saints? That seems to be a new one to pop up in these discussions, which generally come around every couple of years. Have his Southampton years only just come to light?

He relatively recently mentioned it in the press.

I don't think we can count players who were released as schoolboys as mistakes. There are so many promising kids at that age, of course a few of the many released will make it, but it's not a terrible failure of judgement letting them go, just a prediction that has to be made. Ings was only at saints as a schoolboy as well wasn't he?

I think it's more the ones who come properly through the academy and to the fringes, before we release them without giving them a chance, they are the ones we can feel got away.

Now has a pro contract.

Nathan Tella has put pen to paper on his first professional contract as a Southampton player, just months after joining after a successful trial period following his Arsenal departure.

The other way round I know but, Newcastle letting Shearer go because "he was not a very good goalkeeper".

By signing Tella at age 17, he will become club trained for European purposes once he is old enough to be put on the squad list. This is obviously a consideration for the club because they expect to qualify for Europe on a semi-regular basis. After all, Isgrove was kept around for two extra years for this reason.

Fingers crossed if we can pick up three more points soonish we can give the young players plenty of match experience, especially with the need for rotation with such quick turnaround of games.

Personally hoping to see what Jankewitz and Ferry can do before the end of the season.

Well done to the kid for getting on the pitch today.

Yes, but not agreed to a new contract and can leave for free at end of June. So why play him if not committed? PEH anyone??

There’s hopefully a chance for minutes for a few of them with all the games coming up as well as the extra subs.

Wouldn’t surprise me if we announce a deal this coming week.

To say "look, you can get match day first team minutes".

He still has 12 months on his contract, so if he doesn't extend it I imagine we'd sell him for a fee this summer rather than let him leave for free next summer.
