Pilchards Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 I'm certainly buzzing over our new Italian striker plus I can't get that song out of my head... However who has been the biggest impact new signing for Saints? I remember Keegan gave the city a buzz but the football did not reach a mega high instantly, also I remember Shilton in his first few games. I will go with a striker called Evans from Plymouth. Think he scored about 7 goals in our relegation battle a few years back. Anyome else got a player in mind?
Nutwood2 Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Without doubt for me it was Ron Davies! Simple as that!
SuperSAINT Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Recently, I always loved the Billy Sharp signing. Gave us a big shot in the arm.

bpsaint Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Marian Pahars for me, quite simply kept us up in 1999.

Evans scored 4 goals. 2 against Forest in a crucial relegation 6 pointer we won 3-1 (at Forest), one against West Ham (which he sort of chested in before colliding with the post) and another one I simply cannot remember. You are right about him having an impact but he was basically shyte as evidenced by his goalless following season and rapid sale. If Gabbiadini turns out to be the new Evans I will be surprised and disappointed.
Dellman Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Charlie Wayman, yes, I know that shows my age but it was a sensational signing and he did wonders, every kids hero, especially me
SW5 SAINT Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 I seem to remember we signed Evans from Oxford, and they threw in Mark Wright into the deal as well.
CB Fry Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 I seem to remember we signed Evans from Oxford, and they threw in Mark Wright into the deal as well. Not sure what you are remembering but the Evans being discussed here is Micky, who was definitely signed from Plymouth by Souness and he helped us stay up in 1997. No connection to Mark Wright.
foxy9143 Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 I seem to remember we signed Evans from Oxford, and they threw in Mark Wright into the deal as well. Try George Lawrence
foxy9143 Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Try George Lawrence No sorry, Keith Cassells I think
Suhari Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Ohhh. Marian was inspirational. Micky Evans though: just edges it for impact. I remember an away day at Forest: missed header by Pearce... Evans goal. Then he dropped off the radar.
Jimmy_D Posted 5 March, 2017 Posted 5 March, 2017 Lambert for me. You look at teams like Leeds that are still struggling to get back, I'm not sure we'd be back in the Premier League yet without him.
SNSUN Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Marek Saganowski was the one that springs to mind. Came in a banged the goals in, including in the 6-0 against Wolves that we all thought we'd lose beforehand, so bad was our injury crisis. I also think the signing of Boruc at the time had a good impact on a free at a time when we only had Davis for experience.
austsaint Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Henri Camara - gave us a sniff of staying up in that awful season.
NorthamSteve Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Evans, Pahars and Lambert in my memory. Lambert was the most consistent of all of those for a long time at many levels. It has to be him.
jawillwill Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Romain Gasmi Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
John Boy Saint Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Think to a lesser extent you could add in Nigel Pearson in charge, along with Richard Wright between the sticks 2007-8 season. The latter from memory making some impressive saves to give us any chance of another last day escape from the dreaded drop into League 1, the former giving us a bit more of a rigid backbone to take out on the pitch.
STEVEADAMS Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Evans??? Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk That's right mickey Evans Made quite an impact at the time
a1ex2001 Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 in my memory it's Pahars but Brouc and Manollo are also great shouts for the instant impact on team fortunes.
mrfahaji Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Has to be Pahars, that Everton game will live long in the memory. People celebrating, tooting car horns on the home way etc like we'd just won the cup!
whizzpop Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Two not mentioned yet are Ronnie Ekelund lifted a poor Saints side with only Le God to rely on and Andrew Davies in the dark years lifted a very poor defence. After Davies left it would have to Perry, Lucketti and Richard Wright...not to mention the impact of Stern John as well that year before relegation from the Championship special mention to Chaplow who twice made an impact on the side in the early Burley years, and again from League 1/Championship promo years.
jasonb Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 It's threads like these that expose my complete loss of memory of the championship years. Old age I guess. Or maybe I commit the wins more than the losses to long term memory. I remember league 1 far more.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 I read an article where Lawrie said it was Peter Osgood, getting him in gave him and the club credibility and led to him signing all those other top top players slightly over the hill. My list would include Shilts, who was world class at the time and our keepers hadn't exactly been that before. Keegan obviously & Bally who had a great impact on the club, particularly with Steve Williams. Jimmy Case had a similar impact with Mattys generation. More up to date I'd say Lambert & Jose. ZebadeeRust Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Alan bennett made an impact like crashing into a wall at 100mph. Eyal Berkovic start his stint @ Saints with some good displays, including that 6-3 against Ma U
miserableoldgit Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Surely has to be Keegan. I remember the staggering impact that the announcement made not just locally but nationally. Saints signing current European Footballer of the Year!! Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Tom & Gerry Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Surprised no one has mentioned David Webb. Saints would probably still be in the Championship and never have tasted top flight football if we hadn't signed him when we did. His enthusiasm transformed that 66 side.
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 I seem to remember we signed Evans from Oxford, and they threw in Mark Wright into the deal as well. I think it was Cassells and Hebberd went the other way
bangkoksaint Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 I think it was Cassells and Hebberd went the other way Yes it was definitely Cassells. I recall in 89 having a chat with Keith over a cigar and pint regarding him going to Saints with Wright. Top man and did well for himself in Herts Police
Mr Saints Posted 6 March, 2017 Posted 6 March, 2017 Sir Rickie. Scored within minutes of his debut and didn't look back.
