With a top quality, world class goalkeeper we might have drawn 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. With a central defender who could track Ibrahimovic in the last 5 minutes we might have drawn 2-2. DT Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 For a big bloke he doesn't impose himself at corners or actually any other time. He's slow to get down. His positioning is very weak. His kicking is poor. Control not great (witness that absolute howler a few weeks ago), he never comes further than his six yard box, and his shot stopping isn't great (starting to punch shots rather than try and catch them, flap (their third) rather than just stand his ground. Apart from that, he's a brilliant keeper. Start the new lad for a bit.

Saint_lambden Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 His kicking is abysmal. Was a couple of times yesterday, even when he was under no pressure whatsoever, he kicked it straight out of play. Something's not right but it hasn't been all season and we can't afford for it to continue into next. Give Hassan a go until the end of the season - what's the worse that can happen? Webby Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 I've heard he has an injury but that was at Christmas time. I don't know what is but his movement is not right. His body language isn't good either. Maybe he's not happy he's being forced to play? After a bad kick yesterday he spent 10mins looking very uncomfortable, like he'd hurt himself or at least making a show of it to cover his bad kick. Personally, I think his position was poor for the free kick which is nothing to do with movement. He's just given himself too much to do. 3rd goal was put in the one spot he would've hoped for IMO and he still missed it!
pangy Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 There was a point yesterday when the ball came in to the back post, the call went up to leave it and he came out and punched it out from a throw in,a keeper with confidence would of either caught it or let it go out. I have never been convinced by him,he makes the odd decent save, anything either side and he is useless. I really wouldn't be sad to see him go in the summer
Sheaf Saint Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 (edited) Well something clearly isn't right with him. He could, and should have done better with all of their goals yesterday. The first one - everybody watching knew where that ball was going, except Fraser it seems. Poor positioning and very slow reactions. The ball was at the right height for him and about 2 foot inside the post, but still he couldn't get a hand to it. The second one - OK the defenders were at fault for leaving Lindgard the time and space to shoot, but again it wasn't unstoppable. It was side-footed, at least a foot inside the post and bobbled a couple of times before crossing the line, which shows how little pace the shot had. As for the 3rd, the ball seemed to go right through his hand and head on the way in. Now I get that the defensive outfield players made the errors that lead to each of those chances. But when the defence is breached, as it will inevitably be from time to time, at this level there is simply no excuse for the keeper never bailing them out. When De Gea made that save from JWP in the first half, everyone around me in the ground agreed that it was a straightforward save for any half decent PL keeper, but that Forster would not have got to it. Any news on McCarthy's injury yet? Because IMO Forster needs to be dropped ASAP. Edited 27 February, 2017 by Sheaf Saint

Toon Saint Posted 27 February, 2017 Share Posted 27 February, 2017 We needed him to have a big game yesterday and he just offered more of the same. Parrying shots and crosses that he should be catching, poor positioning for free kicks, not getting down quick enough, poor distrubution, and not doing much in the way of shot-stopping either which used to be his forte. Agree with the above comments about De Gea and the JWP save, Forster would have let that one in. His highlight this year has been clearing a ball off the line that was a result of his own gaffe. I'd sell him this summer and replace with Tom Heaton but can't see any interested takers to be honest, especially with the wages he is supposedly on. Do to him what we did to Boruc, buy a new keeper and make it clear to Forster that he will be number two at best. He might choose to leave. Newcastle will probably be back, they love a local player, Palace if they stay up might be interested, Bournemouth too if they don't get Begovic. But Forster has to go, we can't afford to have him playing like this for another season. Not only does it ruin another season, but it makes it harder to pull the wool over the eyes of other clubs and convince them to buy. He still has a reputation as an England international who put in a great performance for Celtic against Barcelona, it might survive one bad season, it probably won't survive two. Lukas Hrádecký of Eintracht Frankfurt please Les, one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga, only Neuer is clearly better, one year left on his contract, 27 years old and what Saints supporter wouldn't want us to have Finland's top keeper again. cambsaint Posted 28 February, 2017 Share Posted 28 February, 2017 He looks ungainly and inflexible this season. I discussed this yesterday watching it on TV and I said I thought he had back problems, as he was so slow to get down to the ball. He is of course an absolute man-mountain, when he stands next to most players he dwarfs them. I don't recall him looking so slow and ungainly last season. in fact he used to be a good shot-stopper and in the England set-up. I think a leg problem would prevent him from playing but a niggling back injury would have the effect of slowing him down. The only other reason I can think of is that the analysts have realised that he is slow to get down to balls close to his feet and he is being deliberately targetted. However I think there is a physical reason for his lack of form but he is just fit enough to play. We'll know if he has an op in the close season. If not then he is just too big, inflexible and slow. qwertyell Posted 28 February, 2017 Share Posted 28 February, 2017 I said this elsewhere, but at the moment he's playing like an outfielder forced into taking the gloves in an emergency. Sure, he can save the regulation shots straight at him - as you would expect anyone to do - but anything that requires a bit of specialist goalkeeping skill (diving, sweeping, coming for crosses) appears beyond his repertoire. When we signed him, I did the usual thing of searching youtubes for compilation videos of him in action, and the fact that there were barely any of him making more than two or three saves rang alarm bells. Much like when we signed Gazzaniga and the only video showcasing his ability was 90% of him kicking. In my opinion, Forster's reputation has been built upon being fantastically well protected from having to do anything. At Celtic, he'd go weeks without having to face a shot. And at Saints, before this season, our defensive solidarity was our great strength. He's being exposed as a very ordinary goalkeeper. There was a reason why he didn't progress beyond third choice at Newcastle and they were happy to let him go. And it certainly wasn't because Steve Harper and Tim Krull ahead of him were anything particularly special.

Charlie Wayman Posted 28 February, 2017 Share Posted 28 February, 2017 Forster seems to have very slow reactions and lacks agility due to his size and ungainliness, the two characteristics that seem to be of the utmost important at this level. Too many fans are grumbling about his performances match after match for it to be a knee-jerk response to the disappointment of last Sunday. The question must be asked what the coaches think about his situation as surely they cannot be unaware of the mood of the fanbase. Indeed the fact that they brought in Hassan in the transfer window might suggest they are concerned. Maybe it is time for a change. Hart would not be a bad option but is he a team player? If we do need to find a replacement let's go for that Burnley lad even if they stay up.

Wade Garrett Posted 28 February, 2017 Share Posted 28 February, 2017 Had he taken a couple of quick steps to his right, before diving, the first would have been a very simple save. The dive to his left looked a bit odd as well. He was slow down to his right for the second, but not really at fault. I wouldn't be surprised if he was injured. If not, it is a really alarming drop in form. For a big bloke, he needs to be a lot more aggressive.
St_Tel49 Posted 28 February, 2017 Share Posted 28 February, 2017 If FF really is carrying an injury and is only playing because his stand-in is even more injured then we need to cut him some slack.
