david in sweden Posted 11 January, 2009 Posted 11 January, 2009 can be interpreted as you wish, but I was.. interested /amazed ..to see some stats. on the FA site. Saints are one of the top 3 - for shots on goal, and McGoldrick has had more shots than anyone else in the CCC. (shock, horror)...but only 7 goals to date. I can't figure out how this works - unless they are last seasons figs. ??? but there they are for all to see. Certainly he's had a lot of shots wide, and some saved, BUT can that be real.... Comments anyone ?.

Comments anyone ?. I have always thought he certainly gets the chances, but when it comes to being clinicla he fluffs his shot, hits the keeper or shoots off target. There have been a number of matches I have seen where he has not been clinical. Additionally, I do think alot of his chances have been from long range, but his lack of finishing is the main reason why he hasn't converted those chances into goals.
Saint_clark Posted 11 January, 2009 Posted 11 January, 2009 Hopefully with more experience his finishing will get better; BWP has certainly improved over time.
St Landrew Posted 11 January, 2009 Posted 11 January, 2009 Well JP is always saying that we create lots of chances during games, and I've no reason to doubt him. It doesn't matter a jot if they don't go in though. Like every other team, Saints could do with a clincal finisher. McGoldrick has found the present setup hard going. He isn't crap like lots of supporters have pointed out. He's just out of his depth at the moment. I'm sure he'll learn, but at the moment, we don't have the time to give him. Someone who instinctively knows where to be, at the right time, is a hard find. Alan Shearer has always had that ability, which is why he was so good. Still makes me laugh that we sold him so early, and then got Kerry Dixon and David Speedie to improve the side. What a joke that was. Typical Saints though. On the point of doing something really good, and then cashing it all in, so that we can get back to struggling. That's where the joke ends.

Yes Steve, because if he had finished it would have resulted in a goal wouldn't it?

As in although quite a few of his chances have been long range speculative efforts, that should not negate the fact that it is his inability to be clinical and finish the more simpler chances (e.g. the one on ones) that is his main problem. I just ran that by my nephew and he understood what I was getting at. Good work Manhattan

shurlock Posted 11 January, 2009 Posted 11 January, 2009 to be fair, we dont have many guilt-edge chances in games and if they've been squandered by anyone, lallana has been the most guilty. stats should distinguish between shots inside and outside the 18-yard box.

BotleySaint Posted 11 January, 2009 Posted 11 January, 2009 McGoldrick is a waster. I have in my head a particular chance, can't remember who against, but he was cutting in from the right with only the keeper to beat and he tried to lob it into the far post (a little like Robertsons goal for us) and it inevitably sailed over. When it surely would have been better to just slide it past the keeper... Very frustrating player.

It seems really unfair to judge any of our young players as part of a struggling team, if you would have put him in the team which reached the playoffs he would be doing a lot better. FWIW I really rate the guy, he gets a lot of stick for not putting a shift in but we had another striker like that who also bagged a goal or two. He also runs at defenders a lot more that Rasiak ever did. He is on course for double figures over the season, which in his first real year in the first team is not bad going at all.

It's like saying imagine Mcgoldrick playing in our team from two seasons ago, with a different midfield behind him, different strike partner with different formation and tactics.

His finishing is a lot better now. Remember that he was playing as a striker for the last two years, so he won't exactly be the best winger in our squad - yet.
