You're the DOF... what would you do? Season 2017/18

This is obviously a hypothetical scenario but I'd be interested to see what people's opinions on this are.

Hypothetical Scenario

Saints limp to Premier League safety but win the EFL Cup 2-1 thanks to a late Ward-Prowse penalty (stay with me ), meaning the possibility of european football again next season.

Claude Puel, despite the heroics of his team in the final is released along with his coaching staff (a lot of compensation, no doubt) and once again, the slate is wiped clean in preparation for the 2017-18 season.

As director of football, you have to recruit a new manager, decide on who to sell and recommend players to buy in anticipation of the new season. So, who would you choose, why and what decisions would you make?

Here's the current situation:

Players Under Offer

Bertrand - £21m Liverpool - interested in moving to a bigger club but can be persuaded to stay (payrise from £50k to £70k)

Van Dijk - £48m Man City, Chelsea, Barcelona - interested in moving to a bigger club is happy to stay another year

New Manager Budget (for compensation) £3m

New Manager Salary Budget (per year) £4m

Transfer Budget £22m

Wage Budget Available (per week) £50,000

Obviously, by selling these players it will enable you to free money in your wage budget and add whatever is received in transfer fees to your transfer budget.

Additionally, you can make other players available for transfer if you so wish.

However - one caveat - try to be as realistic as possible with what transfer fees you receive/spend likewise with the wage budget. Cristiano Ronaldo for £1m on a £1 a week, as good as that sounds, isn't within the realms of realistic possibility.

I'll go first.

Chuff me, the keys to the kingdom and we end up with Charlie Austin at CF (who's going to play the other 20+ games?)

I'd employ a succession of hench Italians and Argentinians, irrespective of if they were any good, take every brown envelope going and blow the remainder of the wages budget on cocaine and hookers. It wouldn't be pretty, it wouldn't be sustainable, but boy we would have some fun, tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

Id have a big clear out - we are fantastic at selling decent players and managers to the top 7 but equally efficient at holding onto very average players

GKs

Forster

McCarthy

Taylor

Defenders

Gardos

Yoshida

Pied

Stephens

Targett

Soares

Martina

Midfielders

Clasie

Ward-Prowse

Höjbjerg

Reed

Isgrove

Forwards

Tadic

Redmond

Rodríguez

Long

Could give all the above a transfer, start buying some actual quality and spending some of the huge revenue we recieve each year.

Puel obviously must go, would get in Laurent Blanc

First I'll phone up UFEA/FA and tell them they can take their FFP and stick it up their arse, then I'll phone Kat and tell her she is going to bankrupt herself to give saints fans what they want, I''ll follow this up with the sort of spending spree that will make the Chinese League look like spending your pocket money on a bag of pick and mix then I'll reinstate Adkins just to **** off Saint Lard. As for players other than bringing Bale home the rest of the squad will be picked by Poll on saintsweb. All the players will all be paid huge wages and given ten year contracts so they can never leave.....

....easy this DOF shiz

Try to get some money back on clasie and replace with an athletic midfielder. Probably a long shot, but Sissoko perhaps if spurs would let him go for half what they paid. Someone in that mould anyway.

Cash in on j rod and replace with a more physical option that might get on the end of some of our loopy crosses.

New black box special at cb.

Basically, improve our squad balance and options a bit. Especially in centre mid, they are all too similar.

I'd sell or release Martina, Long, Clasie and JWP. Bertrand and Virgil would depend entirely on whether they'd stay for an affordable contract. I'd go back to 4-2-3-1 and find a new manager who plays that system. Not a clue who I'd sign, I've rarely seen or heard of half the players we sign. Fonte will need replacing and please, my kingdom for a midfielder who is over 5'9" and can either kick or run in a forwards direction.

Starting 11

Forster

Cedric - Virgil - Yoshi - Bertrand

Hojbjerg - Romeu

J Rod - Boufal - Tadic

Gabi/Austin

This. Martina and Isgrove will be out of contract and we've got enough home grown product now to not worry about the 25 anymore. I'd keep Fraser, McCarthy, Cedric, VVD (unless the offer is over £50m - take note Reed), Yoshida, McQueen, Bertrand, PEH, Romeu, Davis, Redmond, Tadic (assuming Puel leaves), JWP, Boufal, Austin and Gabbiadini if he settles.

Outs: Clasie, Targett (on loan), Reed (loan), Hesketh (loan), Martina, Isgrove, Long, Stephens loan/keep as competition, J Rod

New signing positions - 2x CB, 2xCM (A big strong brute and an ACM), 2 strikers (central ones)

Good raw materials, don't know how Reed and Wilson have gotten it this wrong. Both will be gone by May if we get tonked in the final and finish 16th.

Bl**dy 'ell mate, you've got some time on your hands :)

Me, I'll just wait and see what transpires, mainly because I have no influence whatsoever as to what may happen !

If we win the EFL Cup I'd reappoint Puel as manager for a start. I like your idea of having an ex-Newport County player in goal though. Anyone who's kept clean sheets against Gateshead, Telford, Alfreton and Darlington in the Conference is ok with me. :p
