ashnats Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 So, the signing of Gabbiadini is the highest profile signing we have made in a long time - I'm trying to think of others and not come up with much apart from; Keegan Case Le Saux (but past-peak) Venison (but past-peak) and nothing in the last few years. (tadic maybe?) I feel like this can't be true - I'm missing something obvious. So, aside from the above, who are our highest profile transfer signings? steveo Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 How about Shilton? Resigning Channon these two spring to mind straight away
Hatch Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 That mad effing Italian Osvaldo was high profile.
Badger Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Keegan is the outstanding signing in Saints history. Although Osgood at the time was equally as dazzling as it was the first time we had entered the bigger pool, paying over £200,000 for a player at that time was considered an incredible step for Saints. As Steveo says bringing Channon back was high profile at the time. One signing that probably went a little under the radar when it happened but proved to have great significance was Alan Ball. Colinjb Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 I would argue Gaston Ramirez was in 2012. Toby Alderweireld on loan was a real coup. Osvaldo, as an Italian international has to count.

SW5 SAINT Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Kevin Keegan in 1980 Peter Osgood in 1974 equaling the British record of a £270,000 fee and Charlie George for £400,000 in about 1978 was also considered a major coup at the time. These were deals we were out muscling all the other leading European sides. Nothing in recent years ha come anywhere remotely close.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Rory Delap... Transfer record at the time
DuncanRG Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Osvaldo was the biggest in recent years. Ramirez is up there too but mostly because of the club's status at the time.

paulwantsapint Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Rickie Lambert was quiet high profile for where the club were at the time Followed by Jose Fonte another big money transfer ( both broke league 1 record fee )
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 The World Cup winning Alan Ball definitely plus Keegan & Shilton, for me.
BallBoy Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Keegan made the front pages and first item on the teatime news. Can't think of any others who did that.

ericb Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Peter Shilton, Jimmy Case, Frank Worthington, Alan Ball and Mark Hughes would stand out for me amongst those you mention. Mind you i think only Keegan really had the shock factor of being a truly major signing.
dronskisaint Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Keegan, Osgood and Shilton for me... plus getting Dave Watson was quite a coup too as I recall...was England's current centre back when he came.
spyinthesky Posted 1 February, 2017 Share Posted 1 February, 2017 Keegan by a mile (European Footballer of the Year), followed by Shilton, Osgood, Dave Watson and resigning Channon. Jimmy Melia caused quite a stir at the time (just joking!!)

a1ex2001 Posted 3 February, 2017 Share Posted 3 February, 2017 Kevin Phillips - hadn't he recently won the European Golden Boot? Sad we couldn't really get the best out of him! I thought it was a major coup when we signed him, sadly he never hit quite the same heights for us but there were some quality moments.
