angelman Posted 11 January, 2017 Share Posted 11 January, 2017 For me Shlong. If we are to sit relatively deep, as we did quite often today, then the pace of Long is surely going to be more effective than JRod. He makes the opposition play in a very different style as they know that he can catch them out. Like the bit when Redmond hit the bar, Long was 5 yards behind the defender and still caught him. I also think Long has much more "cuteness" about him. Those little pushes that get missed by the ref. When they have both played, it seems that Long is put out on the wing and JRod goes up the middle. I can't help but think that the other way around would be better. Or is Long better as an "impact" sub?

James Posted 11 January, 2017 Share Posted 11 January, 2017 After tonight has to be JRod with Long off the bench.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 JRods better at holding the ball up. He's starting to look like a proper modern number 9. There's a long way to go, but Boscombe and then tonight he's looked really good. Wouldn't play both up top (although long can play the Tadic or Redmond role) because we'll get out numbered in midfield . Saint_clark Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 I'd written Rodriguez off after the first half of the season as a lost cause, but that Bournemouth game and being the first choice up top has completely reinvigorated him. He's holding the ball up well too which was never really his thing - he got battered tonight though and got no protection at all from the ref. Definitely Rodriguez first choice, but still a big fan of Long - think he has a big part to play for us for a few more years at least.
FriendlySaint Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 For me Rodriguez starts and Long comes on late on. I don't like the idea of them both in the same team with the system we are currently playing.
Saint Billy Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 If Long was the player he was last season I would pick Long, if Jay Rod was the player he was a couple of years ago I would choose Jay Rod. Tbh both are not what they were but out of the two Jay Rod holds more threat atm. Still think we need another striker though.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 Jay is a far better footballer, and can score goals so it has to be Jay. Thought he was superb last night.
bpsaint Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 Shlong has spent most of this season at the Brett Ormerod school of running around not doing much, therefore i'd say J-Rod. If Long were the player he was last season i'd start him every game.
deadpanmatt Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 J-Rod has been great recently, winning headers, flicking the ball on and holding it up. He's adjusting to his limitations since the injury and he was very effective yesterday. As for Long, I think he was frustrated by the tactics when he came on- he'd clearly been told to sit deep to protect the lead which isn't his game at all. When we cleared the ball he just stood still on the halfway line. I'm sure he'd much rather be chasing the ball down and using his speed but had been instructed not to. angelman Posted 12 January, 2017 Author Share Posted 12 January, 2017 The first 15/20 minutes were concerning. We had a back 9 and sometimes a back 10. Firing the ball out, to come straight back. I like Long's speed. If you sit deep like that, he can chase a ball down so much better than JRod (although what happens then is hit or miss), and therefore offer more of an outlet. I also think that the opposition sit a little deeper with him, knowing that he can quite often chase down a 5 yard lead.
SKD Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 JRod for me Can also be deployed on the Left or Right (as under poch, when he showed his best form) when we get a new striker or Austin is back fit.
Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 J rod by a mile. Long has scored 1 goal in 24 games. Just don't get the love in with him. He's hardly started! He needs a run in the team, like most strikers, it's all about confidence. Puel's rotation system does nothing for our strikers. Long's work rate is second to none. I'd have him in the starting 11 ahead of Redmond every time.
Mosin Posted 12 January, 2017 Share Posted 12 January, 2017 i think Jrod, he was awesome last night, held ball up well, bossed Lovren all over the place and created the space at back post for Redmond to score from ( who could have had 4 goals last night defo one of his better displays ), showed some wonderfull touches, good vision to see runs. should defo be JRod starting for me, starting to show some form and always looks dangerous around the box and in it, think he could be a top player again if he can get a good solid run under his belt
