Nathan Redmond's time to shine

Sums him up pretty well to be honest.

He isn't rubbish, but he hasn't delivered anywhere near enough this season.

Does have potential, this stage of his career is when he needs to start moving from potential to quality on the pitch.

If he delivered tonight, I'd almost immediately forget everything else he's missed or misplaced this season.

Very interesting article.

I guess his story is similar to many players though. Ability-wise there often isn't all that much difference, but the very best players are the ones who deliver in the games that matter and end up playing at the very highest level.

If it's a question of him "relaxing" more, perhaps that's a sign the criticism that's been coming his way so far this season has affected him more than you might think? Fans might assume that all players can just take abuse and criticism - Matt Le Tiss was of course a great example of someone who never ever lost belief in their own ability.

Maybe he's more sensitive and anxious to do well, which in turn ends up affecting his performances. But it's encouraging to hear Puel's comments as clearly he feels that he will come good eventually.

Puel has delivered a more attacking style than Koeman ??

Kinda lost all credibility there .

Wasn't there a stat floating around just before Christmas that we'd made more chances under Puel? The reason we have such low "goals for" is that we're relying on Long, Austin and Rodriguez to finish off our chances. They should each have comfortably more goals than they do this year.

It certainly has been better football than under Koeman when it's been going well this year (especially the 1st half of last season), when we were hitting it long all the time and hoping for the best

only the top 6 have more shots per game than Saints. We give the appearance of non-attacking because our build up is slow. If we had the exact same chances, but let the other team attack us more, everyone would think we were fine, it's just because we pass it across the pitch that people find it boring.

Spurs 18.2

Liverpool 17.6

Manu 17.1

Man City 16.4

Arsenal 15.3

Bournemouth away aside, we've needed about 10 chances per goal up to now. Burnley at home we created 34 chances and managed only 3 goals. I don't know the stats for the last two seasons, but i'd be surprised if they are as high as this. We are good at getting the ball down the flanks, but because we've needed that extra man in the build up (usually the central striker) there is no-one in the box to finish or they are in the wrong place. And generally they are too short - no Pelle strength or ability to generate power on a header. Obvious to say, but we miss Mane and Pelle terribly as they would focus the attacking much more through the middle of the pitch. Redmond cannot make runs through the middle and more often than not, turns back / makes the wrong decision at key attacking times, taking momentum out of the attack. Also, under Koeman, we played more long ball at times, which we don't now as we have no outlet for it.

I hope Redmond proves me wrong and changes his game for the better, which he needs to do in order to progress, but years of particular coaching and his own natural reactions do not give me confidence. I would love to eat my words and watch him as his undoubted pace and occasional flair improve and he becomes a regular goal scorer and provider. Let's hope he starts tonight.

Matt ke tissier and Nathan Redmond are two names that should never be mentioned in the same breath.

Couldn't believe the abuse he was getting near me last night for what was a really good performance. One fella calling him a "lazy ****", which frankly beggars belief.

He must be one of the hardest workers we have in the team. I really would not be surprised if the stats showed that he covers most ground. He had a great game last night and when people say he should have scored, it tends to forget about their goal keeper. He made 2 good saves. Sure a bit this way or that way, and it might have been in the back of the net, but at least he forced some good saves.

I really hope this is the start of Redmond finding his feet and properly adapting to his new role. He worked incredibly hard last night and I rarely saw him stop to pass back when in an attacking position. In fact it looked as though the whole team was far less passive last night. This could be down to the occasion, a change or tactics, or because we simply play better football when a team actually attacks us, either way it was exciting stuff!

I didn't have Redmond down as a Guardian reader, but he must have read that article.

He was very good last night, working bacl with Clyne and getting on the end of those 4 chances, as well has what should have been an assist for Cedric.

In all the meltdown after the 3 late Everton goals, it was easy to forget that Redmond had 2 headed chances, a=on cut in and shot form the left and the chance set up by JayRod. I realise that he didn't score any of those chances, but it is encouraging that he is getting into those positions.

Fair play to him last night!

I'm less concerned about the missed chances though, more that he actually showed good composure to score his goal. Scoring goals is a good habit to get into, hopefully he can keep it up. He's never scored more than 7 in a season before, you'd like to think double figures would be within his grasp.

I like Redmond, think he's a decent player.

Then again I see him as a winger, whereas others appear to be judging him as a goal scorer. He'll never be a particularly high scoring player but as a disrupter of the opposition defence he's pretty good.

If we had someone in the middle who could take their chances better I think we'd all be singing Redmond's praises as a good winger.

Do you sit in Kingsland block 35 because the bloke a few rows behind me was coming out with that shiete. He's a clueless muppet most weeks but yesterday he outdid himself. Every time Milner got the ball he blamed Redmond for not closing him down . He complained about Redmond "jogging back" and when Puel made the last 2 subs went potty, shouting "get Redmond off" . Of course he wouldn't shut up about his missed chances. He was lucky it was a midweek game because if I'd had a belly full of beer I'd have probably swung for the twt .

I sit in block 37 but overheard the 'lazy ****' guy in the queue for the loo, so might be the same guy. Similar stuff from people sat near me though, same people who moaned about Pelle, Mane et al and whine like little children if there isn't a crunching tackle or a goal right nowwwwwww!

Why doesn't anyone say anything? These sort of cnts are never hard men

I've done it twice this season. Once when the people behind me (not usual ST holders) did nothing but slag off Redmond in the Europa League who got a bit funny when I turned round and said "look mate, we get it. Can you just shut up."

And against West Brom where some guy next to me (again, not a ST holder) hadn't got the memo that Yoshida is having a good season and shouted nothing but abuse and snide (plus arguably racist) comments despite all the people around me usually discussing how good he's been this year and last. Actually laughed at me when I said I think Yoshida's actually been better than Fonte this season and started chuckling to his friend next to him, looking for them to back up his opinion.

It was awkwardly silent after that and kinda of put me off the game (even before we went 2-1 down). It just creates a toxic atmosphere for everyone and spreads fast. I'm usually right at the top of my voice behind the team but people shouting abuse and the inevitable awkwardness that follows kills the atmosphere dead. I wonder if people realise how detrimental it is.

I remember a few seasons ago there was a "down the line" guy a few rows back who hated possession football but everyone just found it funny. This just seems much more malicious and as if people are getting a kick out of being able to shout abuse unchallenged.
