Whitey Grandad Posted 5 January, 2017 Share Posted 5 January, 2017 You're right about motivation and team cohesion but in terms of being match-fit, playing once a week is playing once a week, whether or not there's a midweek game you've missed. Playing an extra game is better than any amount of training and the more games the better. Following the argument that resting between games is good for a player would mean that after a six week layoff they should be red hot and raring to go in their first game back. There's obviously an optimum period between games but twice a week should not be a problem. There's a significant difference between home and away games too. DuncanRG Posted 5 January, 2017 Share Posted 5 January, 2017 (edited) Playing an extra game is better than any amount of training and the more games the better. A six week layoff is for injury, whereas rest during a season is normal recovery. You can't not follow the argument that rest is good for a player, if that's what you're suggesting. Rest is essential to good exercise, full stop. My point really was this: Chelsea's players are match-fit and they play every weekend. Some of our guys, like Fonte, also play every weekend or the equivalent. What's the difference between them in turns of fitness? I don't accept that Chelsea would be fitter if they played more games, because that's when these issues of rest and fatigue come in. It works both ways too - if we didn't rotate there would be lads sat on the bench with no chance to get match sharpness. But these are areas I and others can't really speculate on, because we don't have a fraction of the knowledge football clubs have when it comes to fitness and sports science. That's why I trust our guys. The converse is that we have rotated against teams that haven't and we've lost. I'm sure you're right, but who? Everton made four changes for our game and we made five, which discounts Fonte for Van Dijk as he was suspended but includes Redmond, who was suspended for West Brom. To put rotation in perspective, Christmas 1946, 25th Barnsley A 4-4, 26th Barnsley H 1-1, 28th Newport County H 5-1. No flying or motorways, probably train/coach. Used 13 players, 9 played in every game on heavy pitches with a heavy leather ball and in leather boots, no substitutes and players played full game. We used 18 players and only Romeu and Forster played all three. There might be some use to looking at football in 1946, but perspective it ain't. I'd love to watch that Barsley team play in today's Premier League! Edited 5 January, 2017 by DuncanRG

It's perfectly possible to get physically fit without playing a game but that's not the same as being fully match fit. Mental sharpness is an important factor too and you won't maintain that whilst you're sitting out a game. Against West Brom we changed three of the back four and that is absolute lunacy. Pulis kept most of his team the same. Two home games in three days should not have been a problem.

Shroppie Posted 6 January, 2017 Share Posted 6 January, 2017 Why is there tiredness in the squad when they've all had at least five days rest? He's obsessed with playing "fresh" players, even though they are weaker and lack game time, it frustrates the senior players to be rested unnecessarily, destroys continuity and confidence. When a settled team us playing well together they will thrive on success and get better. Rotate one or two, yes. But stop this compulsive wholescale changing every game. Saint Charminster Posted 6 January, 2017 Share Posted 6 January, 2017 Yep, agreed, but the West Brom team will have been selected with an eye to Everton away two days later. Badly selected as boufal was leaving for African nations cup after the Everton game, where he was a sub! Should of been rested against WBA. If Bertrand was ill, why was he on the bench! His selections are poor management.

JRM Posted 6 January, 2017 Share Posted 6 January, 2017 Norwich fans are very unhappy at the expensive ticket prices and the crowd will barely be above 10,000 according to their forum yeah looks like they've had a shocker all round with this one, £25 is steep just after Christmas, looks like we'll have 1300 there not too bad with a 4 hour journey to get there but half full away end plenty of room to spread out. Brentford v Eastleigh at £10 might have a few Saints fans going to that. The home end sales look awful, one of their forums talks of a boycott , want the manager out etc, will be a weird game in front of such a small crowd. Looks like plenty of our u23s will feature, it's more like a CheckaTrade trophy game than FA Cup!

Or you rotate to prevent tiredness. We've decided to rotate (at an unprecedented scale) and still whine about how tired everyone is. Brilliant. Lallana's Left Peg Posted 6 January, 2017 Share Posted 6 January, 2017 Bit radical i know, but i reckon we plan/try and win every game Not been very good at it this season then have we. Interesting U23 team. I thought Alfie Jones may have had an outside shot at making the squad for Norwich given his rapid rise to prominence the last 18 months. Given the absentees from that U23 squad then unless they are injured I think the following may well be travelling later today for the game tomorrow: Sims Isgrove Stephens Olomola (although I think I heard he was injured) On Wednesday the U18's have their FA Youth Cup tie against Wigan (at Wigan) - and I would expect to see Parkes, Valery, Vokins, o'Connor, Slattery, Afolabi, Johnson, Rowthorn and Mdlalose all feature in that so if the U18's are playing this weekend I think it will be full of 16 year olds! captainchris Posted 7 January, 2017 Share Posted 7 January, 2017 Yes, but actually, that's a slightly hyperbolic take on it by the Echo. Makes sense to leave Cedric out seeing as he has a head injury and Martina isn't exactly setting the world alight so sensible for Stephens to get the experience. Reed would always have been likely to play given Romeu wasn't rested over Christmas. Sims has been around the first team for a few weeks and Boufal is unavailable. Plus Sims has looked really decent. McQueen has proven perfectly capable against better opposition than Norwich and apparently Bertrand has been ill. So, really, the only surprise would be if Hesketh starts and if any of the other youth players also start. I don't think picking the others is some sort of big gamble. A good take on the situation. Our 'Senior' players have been struggling so this is an excellent opportunity to go with younger lot who have all done very well and arguably should be playing more-particularly Sims and Hesketh who played well and got immediately dropped/sorry 'rotated' (ok I know Hesketh got injured) What will be annoying is if this team play well and then he makes a whole pile of changes yet again.... We need a more settled team and Puel needs to play that team regularly. Rest one or two but not half the team! Anyway rotation is actually not logical. Some players seem to play every nearly every game and others are 'rotated' all the time. If it is actually 'rotation' and not 'meddling' then change em all !! There is a lot of smoke and mirrors with Puel's strategy... Bordering on BS.

Good post No one can deny winning trophies is the raison d'etre for all teams especially when it is entirely against the odds such as our triumph in 1976. However the likes of Pompey and Huddersfield have won more trophies but I would argue that supporting Saints over many, many years, I have seen better players and a higher quality of football than supporters of aforementioned teams.
