First Saints match thoughts

So, I made the trip over from the States to watch my first saints match. Obviously not what I wanted or expected in the result, but still wished to share my thoughts...

- Atmosphere was brilliant at times but poor for long periods. I was sat in block 41 of the Northam, and I guess you could put this down mostly to the inconsistency of the match. Started absolutely brilliant but petered off a bit after maybe twenty minutes. It felt as if half the stand was incredibly angry and didn't want to join in on chants.

- Nothing beats the match day experience. I have watched countless dozens on the television, but the real things I quite incredible in comparison. You locals are blessed to be able to attend regularly.

- Highlights were quite clearly the Virgil goal, but also absolutely taking the **** out of Kane after that pen miss. Completely hilarious.

- Spurs support made quite some noise once they were comfortably ahead, but were absent for almost all of the first half. Loved that when they started their OWTS we drowned them out with the proper version.

- Most people were way more passionate than I expected, although that may be as a result of sitting in the most passionate part of the ground.

- Sarcastic cheering when Fraser made a successful kick, booing of Wanyama, and the abuse towards Boufal and Redmomd surprised me.

- Obviously very disappointed in having that be my first match, but will be there for the WBA home and Everton away matches, so hopefully will be a bit of an improvement.

Here's to six points in the next two games then. Good effort for coming over.

I don't get the sarcastic applause for FF, and abuse towards Boufal and Redmond, or any other of our players, either. It just ****es me off. As long as the game is still on support the team. If you want to boo at the end and offer Fraser out for a scrap in the Northam car park afterwards be my guest. But support SFC when we're playing IMO.

If we lose on Saturday, then I'm afraid we won't allow you to ever attend a match again... :D

Just kidding. Always great to see new fans, especially from so far away. I went to an MLS game in the summer (Timbers v Sounders) and the experience was very different from an English game. Also, I was very surprised at just how knowledgeable the fans were over there.

Unfortunately due to money I can't go as often as one would like, but for me, one of the best feelings is walking down Britannia Road with the wafting scent of the burger vans hanging in the air.

Great effort, I'm sure it was an amazing day still regardless of the result.

Hopefully the next games produce a better result. COYS.

Well done for getting to your first match- shame we didn't win. If you come over again, try the itchen north block 1/2 adjacent to the away fans, good atmosphere, banter with the away fans etc - another view for you to experience.

To be honest I think Redmond deserves all crap he gets and more - he is a lazy, useless, arrogant ****.

Fair play- hope you enjoy your away day at Goodison and can actually physically see the game.

By the sound of it still a **** view unless you're right in the 1st couple of rows.went to Goodison once in the late 90's early 00's .worst ground I'd been to as an away fan.horrid view no matter where we sat due to a load of pillers.guess nothing has changed.

Wouldn't be surprised about the abuse aimed at Redmond and Boufal. Huge %age of our fans are racists.

It's got nothing to do with racism. It's more to do with them not bothering to pick up and letting others do the running. Boufal worse than Redmond but both only seem to come alive when they have the ball. On Wednesday we were being over run and until Redmond was sent off neither put in a defensive shift.

Brilliant. Lazy? Even though the reason he got sent off was for busting a guy yet again tracking back. You simply cannot fault him for effort. He is anything but lazy. I'm sure you know him well enough to know he is arrogant too. Frankly your post stinks of arrogance, and it's quite pathetic really. I'm ashamed of the way our fans treat some of our players, some Saints fans have become so self entitled it sickens me.

Hi guys the Everton game could be my sons first. He is five. Exiled up here in Liverpool so what's the ticket situation. Is the Southampton end sold out? If not how can I get three tickets? Really don't want to go in the home end and risk him turning blue.

Read somewhere on here today that Boufal made the most tackles in the game. Carp formation to go 4-3-3 against Spurs 4-5-1, unless we were going to go full on press/attack, as indeed we did for the first 20 mins. 4-2-3-1 would have been better, Not sure where the Boufal hate is coming from? He's looked decent so far and not his fault he's playing in a pretty meh team. Suggest you maybe take your dark glasses off tomorrow?

Away end is sold out.

Is it really? I was checking the sales, as I will be at this one as well, and as recently as a few days ago there were at least a few hundred tickets remaining in the upper two section. And today the sales ended, I presumed they took them down because the match is near not because they were sold out.

Third and final match was this afternoon. Absolutely gutted although the atmosphere in the away end was quite good. Perplexingly atrocious support from Everton, with the end to the left of the away fans waiting till possible around the 80th minute to sing a single song. Fair play to the Everton stewards who let me stand next to the coach and meet and few of the players.

Gutted for you. Please keep the faith! Supporting Saints is never easy but it does mean we enjoy the wins more than supporters of the more fashionable clubs!

Thanks all for messages. I am quite sorry if I caused this, I had a dreadful feeling something of this manner would happen, but it is quite astounding how bad it was over the three games: nine goals conceded, -7 GD, 2 red cards, and 2 pens conceded. :mcinnes:

Nonetheless, unforgettable trip and experienced a fairly decent atmosphere (IMO) for long periods of the matches. Obviously quite nice to share my passion for Saints with so many likeminded people, you really don't run into too many back in the states. We march on and all that...

Miscellaneous thing to report: Puel arrived very late to the coach and was extremely glum and depressed it appeared. More so then all of the players. Perhaps his interview took longer than normal and maybe you can say his usual mood isn't that far off that, but I would hypothesize that he is getting quite worried. Perhaps Krueger had a quick word with him after the match?

I'll let you take the blame for the results. My kids and I were at all three as well but not our first games by a long way! [emoji846]
