Hojbjerg interview

This guys talks like a future captain. What a lad.

Love this part too:

"I don't go to Southampton to make the next step to a bigger club.’ This is not the reason I'm here. I go to Southampton to make Southampton go to the next level."

We will see in 3 years.

However, the guy is really well spoken- to speak the number of languages he does at the age of 21, really impressive

A touch insensitive given the content of the interview. Did you even read it?
To be fair I hadn't at the time do I admit to being a tit having now read the cancer bit.... but all the "I don't come to saints looking for a move to a big club stuff" is total ******.

Fair enough. It's just that we've seen a few declare up front that saints are a place where they can 'complete the next stage of their development' (before moving to another club) and I had personally thought Hojbjerg fell into this category. Honestly not so sure now. Sure, in five or six years money may come into it but right now we should enjoy his commitment. The only person who ever really indicated long term commitment and then sodded off was Lallana who, whilst I am starting to admire him again, gets all the abuse he deserves when he comes to St. Mary's

It's not something players normally say. The fact that Hojbjerg has moved from one of the biggest clubs in the world gives it some credence as well.

Saints are building a squad of talented youngsters with huge potential. It's no coincidence that our three main signings of the summer were 21, 22 and 22. Why is it so hard to believe that these incoming young players might see the club as being on the verge of developing something special ?

Erm....do I really need to answer that!?

This is a direct quote from Pep Confidential - "He had dedicated more time to Hojbjerg than anyone else, showing him the right way to position his body when he received the ball so that he could move it on immediately as effectively as possible. He had given the player hours and hours of almost non-stop obsessional attention, at times apparently oblivious to time and place."?

So why would a 21 year old who Guardiola obviously rated extremely highly leave Bayern Munich to join Southampton ? You say that all the "I don't come to saints looking for a move to a big club stuff" is total ****** but let's not forget that Hojbjerg elected to join us from a big club. If he was so interested in being at a big club why not stay at Bayern ? They don't come much bigger.

Also I find it difficult to believe that there wouldn't have been other big clubs around who would have been interested in him given his age and obvious potential but he chose Southampton.

As a Saints fan i fully accept that there will be players who will look to jump ship as soon as their profile rises (never thought Mane or Wanyama would hang around) but equally it's worthwhile considering the possibility that some players might be more content than you might think to stick around for a bit on a rising ship where they enjoy their football, can improve as players and have a good life even though they might not earn top dollar.

Everyone assumes Virgil is going to leave in January but if that was his plan then why did he sign a new 6 year contract in the summer ? Maybe the club has more ambition than you think.

Good post. The only bit I would argue with is the new 6-year deal for VVD. Sadly, this does smack of the club and player maximising potential transfer fees. I would add a caveat to say "well done" VVD if this turns out to be the case. He certainly didn't need to sign it. In doing so he is ensuring we (and Celtic) realise massive returns.

That's my way of looking at it anyway.

Oh and a very enlightening read by Piere. I will take the interview on face-value. The personal stuff about his father was moving and to lose someone so important at such s young age is very hard.

He is showing similar resolve to Gallagher who also lost his father young.

It could all be positioning and future profile development but taking my cynical hat off, I hope the lad does well for us and continues to develop.

Surely some of these buggers will stick around and help us 'do a Leicester'. Didn't Wenger troll us a few years back saying "if they could keep their players they would win the champions league". The b*stard!!

Top prospect but gives the ball away a bit too much at the moment. Still an excellent signing though.

I thought he was woeful against Bournemouth in the 1st half, but fair play, he turned it around and was very good 2nd half. Always tricky to judge a players potential, but at 21 he's got a pretty good chance of making a very good footballer.
