Dog eat dog football

Some Saints fans complain when we sell players, but we sign players who are current 1st choices for other clubs. They forget the football transfer market has a pecking order, which evolves a little over the years but it is hard to compete with the elite at the top who have current incomes 2x, 3x or 4x+ more than Saints.

Player bought for Saints current 2016/17 Premier League squad...

1st choice at previous club at time they left

Forster - Celtic

Cedric - Sporting Lisbon

Maya Yoshida - VVV Venlo

Clasie - Feyenoord

Gardos - Steaua Bucharest

Fonte- Crystal Palace

Long - Hull City

Davis - Rangers

Rodriguez - Burnley

Austin - QPR

Tadic - FC Twente

van Dijk - Celtic

Boufal - Lille

Redmond - Norwich City

Not 1st choice at previous club at time they left

McCarthy - Crystal Palace

Romeu - Chelsea

Martina - FC Twente

Bertrand - Chelsea

Hojbjerg - Bayern Munich

No, we complain that we sell on what appears to be a relatively higher basis to our peers and it hinders the development of our squad. Selling players is a reality but it often feels like we sell too many too fast when we do not have a financial need to (unlike many of the clubs you have listed who have to or had to sell to balance the books).

Might argue that Romeu, Bertrand and Hojbjerg were first choice for the teams they played for before joining us, i.e. VfB Stuttgart, Villa and Schalke. Leaves only Martina as an outfield player that was not first choice, says it all really.

The point is surely that, of those we signed that were first choices at other clubs, only one (Long) was a playing in the same division as us at the time...and we paid a significant premium to procure him.

My issue is not necessarily that we sell players - we always have - it is that too many players have been sold to competitors in the same league. I accept that you cannot stop players wanting to go to Manchester United or City but it is pretty unprecedented for a club to sell five players over the course of three summers to one club in the same division. Still it has not worked out too badly so far I guess.

I would be much happier to sell VVD to PSG, Barca or Real than United, City or Chelsea.

Players generally want to stay in the PL were the cash is. Other clubs that can play PL sized wages are few and far between. I'm sure any of those players that went to Liverpool would have happily signed for Real or Bayern if the offer was there but it wasn't.
