Sheff Saint Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Were we playing two up front or the usual toothless stuff? Hard to tell. BWP was wide left and Saga central. McG was almost in the hole so i suppose 4-4-1-1. Sort of. It was a bit toothless still for most of the game. After we'd 'weathered' the Barnsley pressure for 25 mins of the 2nd half we got better. I've seen McG play worse but he was no great shakes today, although he looked like he was on acid after he scored. I'm sure he ran more than he has in the last 6 games in those last 10 minutes. Saganowski was quiet but got little in the way of supply. I think i've said elsewhere, although i'm not sure we've got a goal scorer at SMS (before Saga came back) we've hardly been supplying a host of golden chances for the CF's we have got have we? Sheff Saint Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Would 2 out and out strikers have been more effective? Umm, the midfield needs some umph first! For me, when we won at Derby and at Reading we played a proper 4-3-3. And that was great. But other times i've seen us, when we've been poor, it's like we play 4-5-1, the two wide CFs dropping off, and that makes the supply line to the 1 quite hard. But to answer the question i'm not sure 4-4-2 would have helped a lot today. We've got no bite or drive in CM. I like Surman and Morgan but there's something missing. um pahars Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 I don't really think you can deny that many on here are eager to criticise and write off our chances against every team week in week out. With all due respect when you have only won something like 20% of your games and 10 of the bookies have us down for being relegated then I think that if you're being realistic you would have to say that on average we will probably not win most of the forthcoming matches. People are only reflecting on the situation we find ourselves in. I very often have is down for an optimistic win, but at the back of my mind I am fully aware we only win something like one in five. We're not all masochists or pessimists, just being honest that we're not very good this season. As somebody else has said today, we aren't as bad as some people on here would have you believe. And as I have said above and in other posts, after 26 odd games the table does not lie. We are where we are because we're one of the worst teams in this division. I think we have underperformed to some degree, but if that is the case then we have to come back to a manager who has presided over this under performance. What is this pernnial refrain that 3 points one week only count if you get 3 points next week? It's absolute rubbish. Of course, we want to go on a run. Of course, we want to beat Donny. Of course, Donny at home is an important game. But winning one week makes it LESS important to win next week. That's the whole bloody mathematical basis of the league system. AndyNorthernSaints Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 (edited) Just got back from game. Scrappy game but much needed win. Davis man of match saved us once again today with vital saves. Saeijs looked good in defence and won plenty of headers and tackles. Midfield still lightweight and a better side would have exploited the lack of tackling etc. Fullbacks looked poor defensively and going forward with poor passing at times. Saints got into plenty of good crossing positions but players in the box don't seem to know how to make space i.e two players both going far post, therefore not giving crosser options. Overall i thought it was a hard thought scrappy win that we could have easily lost. Glad i got out of bed to go, after suffering with chest infection this week which meant i had to watch Saints sober :-o Edited 10 January, 2009 by AndyNorthernSaints

Andy_Porter Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Great result BUT if we don't follow it up with a win against Doncaster then it will be pointless imo. We got good results against Derby, Reading, Preston etc and just followed it up with a shocking home performance. We need to buck the trend and get a home win against a poor Doncaster side. This results should hopefully give us some confidence and another home win would really help our cause. Hopefully DMG keeps scoring!
St Marco Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Just home from the game. First off a win is a win and this is a MASSIVE win for us. If we had lost things would have been very bad with Forest winning. In all i have to admit we didn't deserve to win, didn't think we played very well at all really as a team. looked very disjointed. The two experienced heads of our centre backs were outstanding today with Saeijs being superb. Reminded me a lot of the old Svensson. Looked very calm and oozed confidence. He almost cost us a goal when he let the ball run but other then that he was the man, winning most headers and getting a lot of last grasp balls, a solid debut and could be a very good bit of business for us. Molyneux i thought did ok but will have to do better, he is young and unexperienced and will learn. Where as James i felt has not progressed much at all and put in another poor display. Holmes was very impressive i felt and his work rate was emense. Tried to get forward whenever he could but for the majority of the game there was just no-one there to pass to so would eventually lose the ball, he would cross when he could and if we were going to score it would be from him and that proved right. BWP and Surman had a meh kinda game, one of those ones where things don't quite go right where passes end up going to no-one or shots end up going sky high, very forgetful game for those 2. Morgan however im starting to worry a bit about. He was possibly joint worse person on the pitch with DMG. He was lucky in my view not to go off for a late tackle and when he got tacked fairly he turned into Ronaldo and rolled around like he had been hit by his Ferrari, was quite sad really. In my book Morgan started the season so well but since then has been average if not poor, this was one of his poor games. Never really did anything losing the ball so often and never really getting it back, this made the game very scrappy especially in midfield, he needs to re-capture the spark he once had. Which brings me onto our forwards....Saga worked his ass off. He was all over the place like a little Jack Russell. But his want of trying was not matched by the rest of the team. He was on his own not getting the supply line we so badly needed. He did what i expect any striker to do and that is if they can't get anything to simply try different things. Where as DMG is just the complete opposite of that. He really is a **** player. He scored a goal and i give him credit for that because it was well taken and helped us win, but really Holmes is the man to credit with that. His composure and football brain picked him out, he did the hardest part in my book. Other then that 1min where DMG scored he was fecking awful. Didn't looklike he wanted to be there, never helped Saga at all, some of the worst shooting i've seen and the guy near me who had an upset stomach did more running then him trust me. Now without being biased we were so lucky to get the 3 points today. We did not deserve it at all. We were under the cosh for so much of the game that my man of the match is again Davis. He pulled out some massive saves again today that kept us in it but more importantly he shouted at the back 4 telling them what to do basically the whole match, he wears the armband with obvious pride. Barnsley should have won the game and won by a lot, they had golden chance after golden chance that either went blazing over or was saved superbly. They had like 3 1 on 1's that im sure were actually harder to miss then score! And they had what i think was probably a legit goal ruled out. So thank fook it was! We didn't deserve to win, played pretty crap but i will take that every damn week! All that matters is we get points and that is what we done today. We defended well at times and i think if we had Olly and Pearce in there we probably would of got slaughtered. The important thing now is to build on this, the boys have proved they can win. Some of them need to take a look at themselves and ask are they giving enough because some i really don't think are. We can go into the must win game next week with a lot of confidence because we have won a game ugly, it shows you don't have to play beautiful football to win games. If anything i would say Barnsley looked the better passing team today but they lost because they couldn't shoot for ****, which makes a change because it is normally us in that situation. So a good win for the boys and they HAVE to go into the next game positive. One win in however many it is really is not good enough, they have to change the form especially at home and this is a step in the right direction. If we had lost i can imagine this place would of been meltdown or something! I just hope we don't go into the Doncaster game thinking we don't have to try now like so many times before this year, we need 2 wins back to back now. suewhistle Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Just got back from game. Scrappy game but much needed win. SNIP Glad i got out of bed to go, after suffering with chest infection this week which meant i had to watch Saints sober :-o Sober? That was a sacrifice! Thanks for the report. Frankly aren't ugly, undeserved (?) 1-0 wins exactly what we've been missing? As I'm the true alpine Saint I've only seen a few games this season - at the beginning and Christmas. There are signs of improvement and some promising football but not quite the physical drive we need, and patently a great deal of inexperience. DMcG does seem to be getting better: strength and touch in his last game was better, IMO, but it's concerning to hear that he ran around so much after he scored as opposed to before. Is it a confidence thing, lazyness, or that he paces himself, or just wanted to protect the win he'd made?

corky morris Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 A win is a win & even our new Dutch centre half said we did not deserve it, but we desperately needed the 3 points so I am pleased. I suppose the spine of the side looks stronger with David, Size, Morgan& Saga & that could wll make a difference at season end. If the club really want to stay up it is our home form that will save us. Lets follow this up with another win & then (hopefully) we will gain a little more confidence. NickG Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 A win is a win 3 points is 3 points So this is GREAT news. BUT If it is really true that Barnsley were all over us and that the win was undeserved, what is the chance of us following this up with a similar result in the next match ??? Let's just hope that the confidence boost, new faces, and a fresh effort by JP to prevent this going to the young players heads (especially that of McGoldrick) make the difference from all the other false dawns suppose the arguement is we have played some good games this season, but lost due to failings at either end and have been told the performance is irrelevant. Wasn't it you who said about a recent game that we played played cr*p based on result alone and were not interested in the actual performance? Kingsbridge Saint Posted 11 January, 2009 Share Posted 11 January, 2009 Well done lads. There have been games where we have deserved something and got nothing. Sounds like a bit of a levelling out today with us bagging the win without really deserving it. Hopefully the win will start a confidence rebuilding process. A win next week would be great. Administration still my preferred outcome for the season though as I think we will always struggle with the stadium debt and Rupert in charge.
