Give it to Ron Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Yes but it does often sound like people on here have very extreme views. We haven't been great but then we are not the worst in the division either. We have to take the positives when we can so today I'm hoping for a wave of positivity on here! Problem is we have been really bad lately and that has seen us fall into the bottom three with no signs of relief. Forest at home was abysmal and followed by us not turning up against Man U saw morale hit rock bottom. Saga and Saijs has lifted the gloom a bit - tonite like every time we win I am bubbling but tempered with the usual 'one swallow doesn't make a summer' but onwards and upwards hopefully with a good run of wins for a change. I agree but it will be nice to concentrate on the positives for once. Some people seem to give up before the game has even started. I would pont to games like both the Reading ones and Sheffield United away where many predicted we would get killed. Greenridge Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Another reason to ignore anything you hear on Sky! I listened to Solent for the 1st Half and even negative Dave Merrington had to admit Saints were doing OK. 2nd Half on Radio Hampshire - very positive, and predicting the win. David Armstrong always very sensible. Listened to the same. Armstrong had KD as MOM closely followed by Holmes. He certainly felt we deserved the win. COYR. It gives me more hope that we can win next week and pull clear. Just like today doesn't mean we haven't turned a corner (fingers crossed though), there was nothing in losing one game to say we are/were doomed. That assessment came as a result of half a season and being in the bottom three. And with regards Size, hopefully he will be what we need and without being deemed negative, as good as it is that one of our weaknesses has been addressed, I do think we have the right to ask why it wasn't sorted earlier. That comment from Jan earlier where he admitted he was not aware of how competivie this division is was worrying and has left us playing catch up. We've given ourselves a mountain to climb, but looking at that team on paper before the game, I couldn't help but think that it wasn't that bad (certainly not relegation fodder anyway). A gritty win to day may actually prove more valuable than a sublime win as the players (and coaches) need to realise we have to fight for every point from now to May. Very happy tonight and hopefully a win against Donny is defintiely there for the taking.

I think you need to reread some prediction threads from a couple of months back when we actually looked quite comfortable. Many many people predict humiliating defeats every week. It's the defeatist attitude that I object to. When we lose we are billed as certain for relegation yet when we win it's just one win and "it will count for nothing if we lose next week" (of course it counts for something, a good result isn't cancelled out just because we get a bad result the following week!) And as I have said before, that's just what we need. Charlton look fcckuked and having appointed Parkinson I think they will continue to struggle. Donny have always looked weak, but we need that third team to get sucked in. I think Forest & Derby will get better (particularly Forest under Davies) and think Norwich might just have too much about them. So we need to be hoping Watford continue to struggle and Blackpool (just lost their manager), Barnsley and their ilk start falling down the table. gordonToo Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 A bitterly cold day and second best to Barnsley for much of the game but 3 points is 3 points thanks to KD who saved Saints time and time again when it looked as though Barnsley must score. Saeijs added much needed strength to the back line but seemed a little clumsy at times. Saga was fairly anonymous and the Dutch passing game wasn't much in evidence until the last 5 minutes. Still, the team at least tried to compete and if 3 points can be gained next week all is not yet lost.

I don't think we've ever looked comfortable. The only time you could say that was with two back to back wins against Doncaster and Norwich, but even they came after a 4 game barren streak and were followed by a 5 game barren streak. Have a look at this statistics sight as it shows the season by game/month/everything you could wish for. http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/teams/Southampton.html The seasons position graph shows that apart from two spikes at 16th and 17th for one game each, we've been well down the bottom. The month by month results show a couple of wins amongst much dross. The table does not lie and we are worthy of our 22nd position!!! Many many people predict humiliating defeats every week. It's the defeatist attitude that I object to. One off results always produce somewhat of a knee jerk boost of optimism or a knee jerk bout of depression, but generally after a day or so they are seen in the wider context. And for us that wider context is that losses & draws have mainly been te order of the day, resulting in a fairly poor league position and a current form up until today that was only better than Charlton. My new years resolution is to be become a positive person! I'm not suggesting that we will go on any sort of run but I'm not going to predict that we are certain relegation candidates after every loss. As somebody else has said today, we aren't as bad as some people on here would have you believe. If we are going to go down anyway, we may as well go down supporting as much as we can. At least if I take the positives from this game instead of focussing on the negatives then I can have a bloody cheerful week before Saturday. Sheff Saint Posted 10 January, 2009 Share Posted 10 January, 2009 Just back and defrosted from today. Great three points, hopefully the start of a run. I think we used our 'Get out of Jail free' card a few times today. Davies was superb. Saeijs was good on debut, looks a good signing from one game! Holmes looked good as well, as did Morgan. McGoldrick's goal seemed to make him run, which is always nice to see! BWP was a bit rubbish, James, who i think has got better in recent weeks, had a first half to forget. Morgan was good, Surman kept going but had a hard role today. Still no drive or pace in attack and a poor Barnsley team did spend a lot of time in our half and will surely rue some wasteful finishing. Porbably should have been a couple up by the time we scored. No where near a Reading performance today! But a great three points, which keeps us in touch. Must must must win next week for us and even though i thought the performance wasn't all that today, hopefully the 3 points will give the boyz confidence for that!
