sammysaint Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 I do not start threads often but I feel this needs to be said as some people clearly have no clue about football and have been going off at him on social media, Twitter in particular had tweets to Jay Rod saying retire or your **** etc from Saints fans !!!!! IMO He is getting sharper and fitter each game he plays, should of had 2 goals in 2 games granted but you need to be there to miss them, in his first few games he was not even getting into the box and showing anticipation/ gambling for the ball to come across to him, I think if Puel can stick with him and give him more game time on Sunday he will score, then once one goes in with regular game time he will score more. Keep the faith in Jay Rod.
Verbal Kint Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 I have no idea if he's finished or not because he hasn't had a chance to get any sort of rhythm going. With Austin out we have to give him a run of games and then we'll know if he's worth sticking with or not

With Austin out we have to give him a run of games and then we'll know if he's worth sticking with or not Agreed, I will write him off he plays 70 plus mins in 3 of the next 4 games and fails to score and misses more chances that the old Jay Rod would of scored, but I do feel with a run of games he will score then return to some form. Miltonaggro Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 If he ever comes good (which we all hope he will) and gets back to his England form, you'd hope he'd repay the club's faith. There's still a good player in there, 70% confidence with strikers.
OttawaSaint Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 He's clearly low on confidence. He must have been dwelling on Sunday's miss and is desperate to score. I still think he will come good. Pity he didn't score tonight, would have done him the world of good. ****s ragging on him on twitter won't help. Get behind him and the team. I feel that despite the doom and gloom on here we are not that far away from being a very good team. Solid defence, good linkup play and some very skillful players. We just need that something extra from the supporting players to get into the box and get a goal. Davis and JWP need to make those runs but both are struggling with scoring. mrfahaji Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 It's pretty sickening and pathetic to be messaging him things like that on twitter. That being said, I'm a long way from being convinced he still has what it takes. Missing yet another open goal from a yard out (what's that, four for the season?) is not helping matters. It was easier to score that one today, it made the previous ones look like half chances.
Appy Posted 14 December, 2016 Share Posted 14 December, 2016 If he put that chance early on against Prague away i think it may of been a turning point for him, possibly the team too, he looks bereft of confidence even more so than normal since then. Saint_clark Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 I'll continue to support him while he plays, but I never thought he'd come back and be an effective player for us. We gambled and it didn't pay off. Incredible to me that he gets off with missed two of the most open goal chances we've ever seen when others have been lambasted for missing much more difficult chances. I desperately want him to do well but he (like a few others) just looks off the pace. Patrick Bateman Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 I wouldn't bother reading what any thickos on Twitter write and I'm certain the footballers don't either (as in their PR person will do that). I actually think I've seen far more from him in these last two games than before, so he is obviously getting sharper and fitter. As has been said, he is someone that really does need a run of games, continuously, in order to get even more sharp and score; I hope he starts at the weekend. Tom & Gerry Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 Missing from a couple of yards out has nothing to do with his fitness or ability. If he had the ability to score those goals before he was injured he has it now, that ability has not some how miraculously disappeared. It is a matter of confidence and luck. If he can prove his fitness his ability will return.
Ewell Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 He is one goal away from being properly back now. As has been said in the last two games he is finally getting into good positions, we really need to stick with him and support him. I am sure he didn't want his career to go the way it has. His comeback has been extremely long and slow and it was always going to take a long time.
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 He has certainly looked better. If they'd gone in the confidence would return but missing them will just damage his it further. Hopefully, he'll put a more difficult chance away soon (against Bournemouth would be good) and he'll be away.

charliemiller Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 Personal view , I was really ****ed off with Puel for putting Redmond back in against Stoke . Jay Rod really looked like he was getting there on Sunday , I know he missed from 4 inches out but he could have done with another start to push the improvement on .....But no he drops him and shuffles the midfield , its getting a bit much

Highfield Saint Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 He has been out for a couple of years and in my view is looking pretty good all things considered. You cant expect him to be match fit or match sharp after a couple of games. Look at Tadic - he's been out for a few weeks and was well off the pace of the game on Sunday and his touch wasn't the same as before his injury but that's OK because he hasn't been written off (yet). Lighthouse Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 I'd much rather get rid of Long than J Rod in January, as the former has always been a distinctly average player. He is definitely looking sharper but he desperately needs that confidence boost. I'd be tempted to give him an extended run. After all we've been doing the same with Redmond in the hope he eventually comes good so why not do the same with Jay.
striker Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 I rate Long higher than J Rod. I'd play Long and push him to get over his scoreless period. We need Long to start scoring. J Rod is an unknown now, and its been years since he has really been productive (obviously because of his injury). Long is just 6 months or so removed from being productive. As if he reads any of them anyway. His social media accounts are all run by his agent/management company. Personally, other than a brief cameo against Sunderland in August which basically persuaded the club not to send him out on loan, I've not seen a great deal from him that suggests he looks likely to get back to anywhere near the level he was at before his injury. On Sunday, in the first half particularly, I doubt a central defensive pairing will have had an easier game all season, his movement was non-existent, didn't want to come short for the ball to feet, didn't want to spin in behind to run the channels, and those were two of his key assets when he was on top form. Added to the fact he's had two chances put on a plate for him this week from a combined distance of 1.5 yards and STILL not managed to score, I don't think it's unreasonable for people to take a view that he's perhaps not up to it anymore. We'd all love him to come back and be how he was in March 2014, but from what he's shown on the pitch this season it's looking less likely by the game, IMO. What I am curious about is how scoring might effect him. Pelle & Rickie had times where they looked shocking and then suddenly scoring would completely change them. But as I said earlier, he won't get 2 easier chances to score than the 2 he's just put over the bar from half a yard out.
derry Posted 15 December, 2016 Share Posted 15 December, 2016 Only Long and Rodriguez could possibly score a few goals. Everybody else is a once in a few months occasion. Play them together and try to build on the mutual support. Ditch Redmond as a striker and use Boufal as the most likely of the rest to score plus possibly Sims. To do that though Puel has to switch to 4-2-3-1.

J Rod is an unknown now, and its been years since he has really been productive (obviously because of his injury). Long is just 6 months or so removed from being productive. This seasons Slong is more like the normal Slong, he is not a scoring striker, i do rate him highly, he is a top player, but you cant really think of Slong as a goal scorer / finisher, he is just a dedicated hard working player who scares defenders with his pace and his constant hassement, Even a Broken Jrod is a more goal scoring threat than Slong, and come on? would you have expected Slong to put them chances away? seriously? he has missed more chances this season than Jrod has and has not been out injured for 2 years, not to mention he wouldnt even get into them posistions to have missed them chances any way. I just think he needs time, he has not played for a long time, he is getting into great posistions and after a good long run of games, he would have put them chances away. I think he will score more than S Long will if he gets the same playing time, and the fact he has scored already and Slong has not says it all tbh and he has had around a 10th of the playing time Slong has had. My opinion any way.

doggface Posted 20 December, 2016 Share Posted 20 December, 2016 So happy for JR. I hadn't given up on him but felt regular games on loan in January would be a no brainer for all parties. A loan would have been last chance saloon. Perhaps Austin's injury could be career defining for JR? Poor finishing aside vs Stoke and Boro, he has shown improvement over the last 3 games culminating in a great 2nd half on Sunday. What a goal that was too! Hopefully he can kick on from here, has always been the archetypal confidence player.
