Puel out

Not 17 goals though, and the general ignorance of the effect other competitions have had on our league position this season is the comical thing about all this "Puel out" balls. Not a single one of the critics has come up with a better way of dealing with the challenges the schedule alone has provided than the one we adopted.

Every argument is "we should attack more", "we should score more", "we should pick the best team all the time". NONE of those are viable approaches in the context of a wider season. Next year will be different unless we get to BOTH domestic cup finals.

Austin played 1 game in 19 days and was rested, we changed 3 of the back 4 versus WBA yet Yoshida played 3 games in a week, since we have been out of Europe have the league form and performances improved, since Puel has spent more time on the training ground have the performance improved - away yes home?

Did we change formation to suit the players available of stick with the rigid pattern? The best side in the country played 3-5-2 did we try that we have 2 of the best attacking full backs in the country suited to that formation - did we try Bertrand in the centre like Koeman did?

All valid arguments put up before and ignored...its all the fans fault brigade.

Not backed by the board but has he utilised the resources he has well?

Professional footballers would much rather play competitive games than do training instead.

That would in the "be careful what you wish for" category

Then people would be going "Oh ffs why are we so open, we need to be a bit more cautious as we are conceding to many"

The attention has mostly been on Puels goal scoring record, but his goals against record isn't great either.

We have scored the least amount for 10+ years

and conceded our most for last 4 seasons. Koeman and Mopo both played more open football than Puel but both conceded less goals.... go figure

Its almost like the best form of defense is attack :)

Only in moderation I'd say. But also it's not necessarily about what they prefer to do, it's what's best for them. You really need to be 100% mentally, and close to it physically to get any points from a PL game, lack of time to rest, improve and prepare is crucial.

Also, think back to football training as kids (if you were in a proper team) - everyone looked forward to "playing a match" at the end, doesn't mean it was the best thing to do for improving the players/team.

Remember the myth that MPs teams always tired in the second half.

well, The9 suggests that there was no other option that rotate the hell out of the side this season

Spurs were in Europe, went for in the FA Cup and took the league title to the last couple of games (and still pushing)

be interesting to know games/mins Kane, Alli etc played this season compared to our better players

Considering the weakened squad Puel was left with after Reed sold our 2 top goal scorers, Mane and Pelle as well as our enforcer, one of the best defensive midfielders in football, Wanyama, he has done very well to get us to 8th place. Les Reed is the one who should retire. The ideal replacement would be Paul Black Box Mitchell, the real man behind our success in the transfer market, as we've seen since he went to Spurs, although Man United are rumoured to be interested in him. I'd expect Puel to get even better results next season with Mitchell's help and without Reed's interference.

Puel has overseen some dull football and #saints home form may have done for him.

But I think he deserves a chance to put it right.

Unfortunately football is about more than managing a season, which Puel has done well.

His selfless nature works against him - shame.

Even just now when I pressed Claude Puel about how he feels about all the recent criticism & boring football, he was calm & modest #saintsfc

If that is my last pre-match interview with Claude Puel it is a shame.

8th in PL, Cup Final, key injuries & sales & he's put under a bus.

This doesn't sound like he is expecting to go does it?

Puel said: "We will see if Soares can play this game and also for Ryan Bertrand. They have some pain, some tiredness, but we will see this tomorrow and the day of the game to see if they are available.

"Shane Long also is unlucky with his broken metatarsal, but we will see him next season."

Firstly, thanks for actually addressing the question.

One question in response - when was the Austin resting?

Re: West Brom (presumably Sat Dec 31) it seems pretty obvious that our full-backs do a lot of running and would be precisely the kind of players that would need changing for a game schedule that went Wed-Sat-Mon, which only leaves the question of the centre backs. We had 3 potential CB starters at the time, Van Dijk got sent off against West Brom, who were you anticipating they picked from Fonte and Yoshida for the Everton game 2 days later given that Stephens hadn't been tried at that point?

Yoshida didn't play on 28th, played on 31st alongside Van Dijk as Fonte wasn't playing twice that quickly and had only done so in two EFL Cup games all season, and because Van Dijk was sent off Yoshida had to play on the 2nd when he'd have been rested, and then again in the FA Cup against a lower league side 5 days later (which is significantly different to 3 or 4 days later in recovery terms). Again, not sure what the problem is, there was a strategy, and the sending off messed it up. If you want to argue that we shouldn't have picked Yoshida against West Brom then you have to justify picking Fonte for 2 games in 3 days, if you want to argue it was wrong to pick Yoshida 5 days later against Norwich in a game where we kept a clean sheet, well, both the centre backs scored in that game and Stephens also started it - albeit at right back.

"Since we've been out of Europe" is not actually that relevant, because due to the EFL Cup run (where we needed our first team to play come the January semi-finals) we still didn't have a midweek break until after the Saturday 4 Feb game. So there was a full 2 month fixture congestion period AFTER we were out of the Europa League, so the amount of time spent "on the training pitch" and the effect of the performances shouldn't be judged until there was a period where the club was only playing at most once a week.#

As it happens, the first game we played without a midweek fixture we scored 4 away from home and stuffed Sunderland. The match after that we lost to Man U in the EFL Cup Final, in a game pretty much everyone agrees we deserved to win and in which the performance was widely acclaimed. With another week off we scored 4 again winning at Watford. The week after that we lost at Spurs, but then no-one else won at Spurs in the Premier League this season either. Having only played 2 matches in the whole of March, every match since then has been preceded or succeeded by another match within 4 days, so again, not relevant for judging Puel "having more time on the training ground".

Your formation suggestion is interesting, but as we've barely had 2 first choice centre backs for most of this season and (as we've just established) we haven't had much time on the training ground, I don't think it's viable to suggest we should have changed formation and nor would it necessarily have improved results. At best it's a "maybe it might have made a difference either way". Conte had time to change his formation given that Chelsea weren't in Europe, and in fact had 31 days without a midweek game to work it out after the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal that prompted their tactical change.

So...

So...

So to answer you post which is a good argument - Austin played one game we had an international break (the first or second in season)he was then rested after playing 1 game cant remember game but my point is with strikers they need to play and get match time - although with Austin playing him wide left and watching him try and chase down the full back was pitiful too.

My point and not explained very well was over Christmas we had one winneable game WBA at home he should have prioritised that and put out the best side when has any successful side changed 3 of its back 4?

Puel himself moaned about lack of training time and just being able to use the gap for tactics and getting ready - agreed but my point is has he now improved the side that well now that he has had time since we went out of Europa and the F A Cup game? With our facilities he has had plenty of time and surely professional footballers should be able to manage twice a week?

Have we really only had 2 first choice CB all season? Fonte has declared he wanted to play? Puel himself even stated he could try Bertrand there so we had options but were not tried - we were shipping goals but didnt attempt to plug that but went for the ultra defensive shape we have seen at home.

We are 8th so on paper its worked and he has achieved what we wanted him to with the shocking support he has had from above and again from his staff and my points are probably irrelevant but just I think we could have done better.

I also think injuries to Pied and McCarthy were a bigger blow than we realise certainly in the FA game where poor Harry Lewis was hardly a game for his development behind that side.

PS We had enough time to switch from the diamond why not 3-5-2?

The bottom line i suppose is if we had this home record yet we were losing matches 3-2 or 4-3 and everyone was going home entertained then 8-10th, a cup final and some bloody good football would be more than enough to save/keep his job.

Its the boring football, the questionable selections and sheer **** poor substitutions during a match that will do for him if he goes.....unless the player unrest thing is true in which case there really is no other choice.

We're going to finish 8th and we reached a cup final. A disappointment that we didn't get out of the group stage of the Europa league but all in all it has been a pretty good season. The football has been a bit stodgy at times but to give the man a three year contract and sack him after one year based upon those results seems very harsh indeed. For a first season after losing Wanyama, Mane and Pelle last summer is not a bad achievement at all.

So on the face of things it would be foolhardy to sack him when there is no-one obvious to replace him. Saying all of that, the unknown factor is what his relationship is like with the players. We can guess but none of us actually know. If there are big splits in the camp with players threatening to leave then the Board have to decide between letting those players go or letting the manager go. We are heading down a very dangerous path by letting the players get their way especially when you look at how one or two have performed this season. I realise players now have power in the game but you the by sacking him because of player unrest you are basically letting the players pick the manager. That will only end up one way.

This is a pivotal time for the club with a massive decision to be made. Get it right and we will be looking at top 8 again next season. Get it wrong and we could be staring a relegation fight in the face.

Puel is getting a lot of flack in the rags about players not liking him.

It is NOT Puel some players have the issue with, it's Eric Black.

Bertrand and Long in particular.

But for some reason Blacks name is not getting mentioned in the press.

According to Puel the reason for the mass rotation was to avoid injuries later on in the season. How did that work out?

I completely get that you will have to make a couple of changes to keep certain players fresh but we were seeing 5 or 6 per game at one stage. So many changes were leading to disjointed performances and seemingly unhappy players.

It's not exactly like we play a high intense style of football either.

The voice of reason

It is, but I think the decision of "manager vs players" is a little more complex. There tends to be a view, and I would usually agree with it, that "player power" is a bad thing, but equally so is low morale or bad coaching. If players are being disruptive because the manager is making them work harder, or because they are set in the old ways and don't want to change (e.g. start of the season with the diamond), then of course the manager needs to be supported. However, if the players are exasperated because the manager (or coaching staff) aren't rewarding the right things in training, or they aren't giving the players a voice/input etc, then that's quite a different matter.

From what I know, there is at least one example of Puel not being a very supportive or communicative man manager, which hints at the player unrest being true. Of course, it could be an isolated incident/player, and while the source of my information is probably telling the truth, it's not necessarily the whole truth (i.e. they may have an agenda, but no reason why they'd just make it up), but concerning nonetheless.

We'll considering the press are saying players are unhappy about lack of game time you'd think they'd welcome the rotation so the could all get to play not be unhappy about it...

The press is also saying players are unhappy that some players always get picked but only three players always got picked Romeu, VVD (before his injury) and Forster.

I get your point but it's probably more to do with the fact when an individual player actually played well he knew he was going to be dropped for the next game. Rodriguez and Clasie are prime examples of this. Tadic and Davis have been poor for a number of weeks yet are nailed on to play.

I wondered if VVD has had anything to do with pressure on Puel. Total conjecture but listening to some of VVDs interviews when he was playing, I got the impression he wasn't very impressed. Could it be VVD will only commit to Saints if Puel's not part of the picture? Could it be enough to tip Puel out?

Davis is captain in the absence of VVD so not dropping him is understandable.

With regards to Tadic his one of the few creative players we have yes he has been poor but in a team struggling for goals are we going to create anything putting Jrod or Clasie in the team in his place. I doubt it. Bournemouth away aside Jrod has been a pile of turd this season and Clasie looked good in one half against a west brom team who couldn't be arsed. The only real option for replacing Tadic and keeping some creativity is Boufal but he has been poor up until the man u sub appearance when actually had some impact after coming on.

Clasie was good for half a game at westbrom ( when they couldn't be arsed) and faded in the second half. He is also quite often blowing out his arse by about 65 minutes. He is a poor player (can't believe he was touted as Morgan's replacement) who I hope we will get rid of this summer we clearly only signed him because of Koeman. Romeu has no trouble holding down his place and for good reason.

Jrod to despite a couple of cameos he has been **** poor and is another player I hope we are looking to upgrade this summer regardless of who is manger next season

I guess they will be upset at not playing but frankly I'd of been ****ed if they had been regulars in the match day 11 all season because neither of them are good enough imo

If all the 0-0 draws had been 2-2 or 3-3, I don't think his position would be in doubt. The problem is that given the options we have in midfield and attack we should be scoring more goals. The fact that we're not suggests that there's a problem with the formation and tactics and he doesn't seem to know how to address either.

FWIW anyone I've ever spoken to hasn't had a bad word to say about him, i get the impression he's pretty well liked around the club.

In reference to the original post, I'm not sure there is much more to expand on other than what's been said previously RE players falling out with coaching staff.
