London Saints - Big Saints Quiz, Thursday 13th October

The Saints Foundation are running a series of regional quizzes, with the winning teams from each event invited to a Grand Final at St Mary's hosted by Matt Le Tissier and Franny Benali.

 

The London "heat" will be held on Thursday 13th October at the Grosvenor Casino in Russell Square, London. Things get underway at 7pm. Quiz topics are a mixture of Saints and general football. A free buffet will be provided.

 

Entry for a team of 4 is £20, all proceeds to the Saints Foundation. If you cannot get a team of 4, you can enter individually for £5, turn up on the night and you'll be allocated a team.

Well done London Saints for hosting a very good and fun evening last night.

The excellent food provided by the Casino was probably worth at least £10 per head anywhere else

so the £5.00 pp entry to the event was a bargain.

The only problem was that 3 of my team were in their 20's, thus any Saints questions before the mid 90's

were met with a blank stare. We finished in the relegation positions - a gallant 9th out 10 teams.

As said, a good evening.

Right. John Gittens joined in 1985 but left for Swindon in 1987. He returned for a short spell in 1991 but then moved on again to Middleboro' in 1992

 

Total 44 apps.+ 3 subs. ..plus another 50-odd games for the Reserve side, although " fringe player " does sound a little unkind.

For a young defender, he was always second choice for CB's like Mark Wright and Kevin Bond in his first spell at The Dell, and used as a back-up for the very dependable Kevin Moore and Russel Osman after his return in 1991.

 

Perhaps he was never going to become Prem. quality and the arrival of players like Neil Ruddock, Ken Monkou and Richard Hall soon numbered his days with Saints.

Nice one, thanks! Got 44/65, Saints History definitely the toughest round for me.

 

Edit: Going to print these out and give them to my dad on the plane to Milan, see which ones he'd get that I didn't!

good guess maybe, but it was actually Dennis Wise.

 

Like Dennis Wise, Kevin Phillips was " small of stature "(eventually 5'7") and likely even shorter when a schoolboy with Saints 1987 and later Saints Reserve player 1991.

One of the very few decisions that Dave Merrington got wrong, when he tried to convert him to become a RB ...whilst at the same time Saints had a couple of other promising youngsters named Shearer and Le Tissier on the up.

 

Kevin then dropped to non-League football but made his way back into the League and eventually played for England after scoring 35 goals with Sunderland one season.

 

Sunderland then, somewhat thoughtlessly let him go when he was past 30. Gordon Strachan signed him and he scored 26 goals for Saints in a couple of seasons before moving on to Aston Villa following Saints' relegation from the Prem.

 

His "absence" from Saints was a mere 12 years.

Not sure it's unkind - surely playing a similar number of games for the first team and the reserves would be the definition of a fringe player?! It's not a description of his ability, but rather of how often he played. The fact that the actual question says he left for Swindon makes it slightly more gettable as an answer too.

No I can't disagree with that , but the fact that as an up-and-coming player he was 3rd choice to the likes of the " first-choicers " (listed above) limited his chances.

 

There were occasions that I might have selected Jack Cork ahead of Wanyama.....and we can only wonder what Romeu would be like today ..had Wanyama stayed?

 

Whilst everyone is praising Sam McQueen's debut on Sunday, most of us realise that as soon as Bertrand and Targett are fit again ...Sam will be back to 3rd choice.
