Amazon courier job

My contract is coming to an end this month and have a few interviews booked, but do have an offer for an Amazon multi drop driver.

Never done a driving job before so looking for advice. Anyone done/do this?

They pay £100 day, typically 6 day week, and £15/day bonus. They also charge £165/ week van hire.

Self employed basis

If that's gross, take 20% for tax, leaves you £387 per week for a six day week max.

Good luck.

A lot of the posts have been deleted but you get the idea: https://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/amazon/ref=cm_cd_pg_newest?_encoding=UTF8&authToken=&cdForum=Fx20NG9OQFCP0QF&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx3MOX2HIIVZHHD

Doesn't sound like the most glamorous of jobs and the hours look like they are very long - working for 15 hours a day and only being paid for 10 doesn't sound fair. Not sure I like the idea of these types of roles being classed as 'self employed' either. They clearly do NOT fit the criteria for a self employed role as the 'employee' has absolutely zero control over what they do, when and how they do it, with the 'employer' dictating everything, including the route to take to deliver the parcels. To me, this is a 'cheap' way for the company to 'employ' staff without paying the costs associated with employment like Holiday Pay, Minimum Wage, pension, sick pay, national insurance etc etc.

Thanks for the replies.

You can use your own van, and they recommend that after a short while - when you know you like it.

Fuel is paid at 17ppm and you can claim back 45ppm I was told.

I also have interviews for a local private hire company as a chauffeur doing all kinds of jobs, which sounds cool. Not sure of the pay but that is fully serviced cars.

Also have one at Sainsbury's for a driver.

I do have interviews for jobs more in line with what I've done (Account Management / Recruitment) so hopefully one will come off :)

Have you tried a company called 'Futurestep' : http://www.futurestep.com/ not sure if they still are, but they were looking for an onsite recruiter in Southampton as they've just won the contract for all the Lidl distribution centres. For an onsite role the pay is very good....

Brilliant, thanks... I hadn't seen that but have now applied. It's perfect for what I'm looking for and literally 3 mins from home :)

And you're not likely to!

I got an email from them yesterday afternoon cancelling the interview saying the dynamics with the client had changed and they'll be in touch once they know more. Sounds like bull to me....

Oh no, what a crock o shyt! You got anything else on the bubble?

Ok, I've never been in this situation before.

Since my last post, I've had 3 job offers and am at final stage for another.

1 job I don't want, but took it because it was the first offer and I needed something. Anything.

The 2nd and 3rd are for very different companies, different responsibilities but both equally as good.

The 4th (final stage interview) I really want and is for a HUGE company.

Not sure what to do for he best!!

Good position to be in. Naturally go all out for '4,' but if both 2 and 3 have been offered then what a wonderful safety net!!

Coming a bit late to this but I wouldn't touch the Amazon job with a very long barge pole.

You will be working very, very hard for that money and if you are running your own van you will be paying all of its maintenance costs, insurance, mot etc - 17ppm falls a long way short of covering that.

Tbh just read that forum that was linked it will tell you everything you need to know

Well done !! But be polite when you tell the 1st job offer company that you won't be taking

up their offer after all. You could well have caused them extra work having to look for your

replacement. You never know if you will need them in the future IF you start looking for a

another change of job.

Absolutely right. It doesn't sit right with me that I having to do this, not one bit.

I'm dreading telling them today tbh.

Although it wasn't a job I particularly wanted they were a nice bunch of people.
