Graffito Posted 15 September, 2016 Share Posted 15 September, 2016 English teams win more points after EL matches, which is contrary to the common view that European involvement has a negative impact on league form. There was something in the Times about six months ago, that stats analysis column they do each week, which showed the same.

There was something in the Times about six months ago, that stats analysis column they do each week, which showed the same. Also needs to be taken in the context that English clubs have traditionally not treated the group stages with a great deal of respect in the past, so the team that plays on the Thursday has generally been significantly different to the team that plays in the Premier League on the following Sunday. Clubs like Spurs and Liverpool have had the squad depth to be able to deal with the extra games, so a "weakened" team they can field is still strong enough to compete against most Europa League opponents, given that Spurs and Liverpool would be top seeds in the EL group stage. We don't have the same depth as them by any stretch of the imagination, but the fixture list hasn't been too unkind. Of the six games immediately after EL games, there's only really Man City away where you'd automatically assume we'd lose the game anyway.
Robertoe Posted 15 September, 2016 Share Posted 15 September, 2016 Not the most insightful data. Depends on injuries, squad depth and distance you have to travel. Lot of luck too, might just have tricky fixtures after a Europa game. Given we drew at home to sunderland and watford I won't be blaming europa for poor league results. Lot of it is just self fulfililng prophecy anyway. Same way all teams doing well are told they can't keep it going, most believe it, Leicester didn't. I agree in terms of the points before/after data, but interesting to see the preparation and recovery times teams get in different countries. This can definitely be an advantage rather than the league pimping to tv demands.
