CB Fry Posted 17 September, 2016 Share Posted 17 September, 2016 It can be argued that the problem is still a lack of a recognised goal-scorer. Looking at Premier League goals only, Long has 43 in 206, JRod has 22 in 82, Austin has 19 in 45 to compare with Pelle with 23 in 68 and Mane with 23 in 70. Austin appears to be the only one with a half-way acceptable level. However, the Saints made up for the shortfall last season by many players chipping in. Not sure that we are any worse off than last season so just need all the team to start believing they can repeat it. It may be that Austin and JRod aren't fit enough to start this game but would like to see them given a chance. Mane and Pelle scored 11 each in the league last season. Not really beyond the realms of possibility that Jay Rod, Austin, Redmond and Boufal could find those 22 between them, plus the one to cover the one that Austin did score last year. We only need one of those four to have a Troy Deeney level season and we're halfway there.

Saint_Tony Posted 17 September, 2016 Share Posted 17 September, 2016 Fancy us to win this, going for another 3-0. Austin to start alongside Long again. Fonte, Bertrand and Davis in for Targett, Yoshida and JWP. Then throw in the kids and Yoshida against Palace. With the Europa, I'm really not bothered about the league cup for the first time. stknowle Posted 17 September, 2016 Share Posted 17 September, 2016 That's an expectation of Long he's never achieved. Last season was his best and he still missed a lot of chances. I'd hoped he'd kick on and get to 15 this season but the first few games and last night he looks at his worst. He'll still run a lot, cause a few problems, but touch and finishing just woeful. Makes the right runs most the time, finds space but his form is way off right now. Rather not see that rewarded with starting so I'd go Austin and Redmond. Really hoping Redmond and Tadic will drift wide and it'll be less of a diamond anyway. Watching tadic struggle in his new role is really annoying. It's testament to how good he is at everything apart from scoring that he continues to be picked. Seriously, if he took even 50% of the chances his superb work rate and running earn him he would be one of the best strikers in the league. BARCELONASAINT Posted 18 September, 2016 Share Posted 18 September, 2016 Todays game will be very different from Thursdays Europa training session!....There is no way Swansea will be that poor and we will need to keep improving (I honestly think we have been getting better and better) if we are going to get a win. I think there will be changes again to the side but i'm hoping Puel saw that Cuco is a great crosser of a ball and starts him ahead of Cedric who is out of form at the moment. For me Austin has to start, he has shown if you get the deliveries into the box he will always be a real threat. For me Long has to start ahead of Redmond, Long is the perfect foil for Austin. My one dilemma funny enough is the CB pairing....I really think Fonte is out of form and the Euro's have effected him badly.....Yoshi is a far better defender than people give him credit for...if only he could cut out the one a game bad back pass!....Fonte has been making mistakes but just does not get scrutinised as much! For me this has a tight game written all over it with one goal either way deciding it. Would like to be proven wrong and we win comfortably. hypochondriac Posted 18 September, 2016 Share Posted 18 September, 2016 I hope we don't persist with redmond as a striker. I'm also slightly concerned by all these comments about conserving the squad. Chopping and changing the team every game in the hopes of giving some a rest means very little if we keep losing in the league. For me we should be playing our strongest team and formation with only minor changes for fitness and to conserve players. If we were that worried about that side of things then we would have bought more players in the summer.

tajjuk Posted 18 September, 2016 Share Posted 18 September, 2016 If we don't score against Swansea we will struggle to score against anyone, their defence looks pretty poor and does not look like a unit at all. Chelsea should have scored 5 or 6 last week and somehow went 2-1 down to the most blatant foul I've ever seen, followed up with a second foul two seconds later.
