I thought it would be interesting to see what people thought of the other teams summer business - in order to simplify it i went with a rating system of Amazing, Good, Ok, Poor, Dire.

Amazing: Man City, Man United - signed some of the best players in the world and the best managers in the world.

Good: Stoke, Chelsea, Saints, Liverpool, Spuds, Arsenal, Leicester

Ok: West Ham, Bournemouth, Palace, Boro

Poor: Sunderland, Everton, Burnley, Watford

Dire: West Brom, Hull, Swansea - i can easily see Swansea and West Brom going down now, which is something i wouldn't have considered at the start of the summer.

Out of the teams fighting for somewhere between 11th - 7th Stoke and Leicester have done the best business - closely followed by us.

Seems that more or less the better teams with more cash had the best summer - who would have thought it!

Difficult to say West Ham's has been "ok". brought in about 13 players and lost no-one of importance?

Considerably stronger than last year. Just unfortunate that Ayew has got injured. Also kept Lanzini and Payet. Certainly got the squad to compete in the Europa L...Oh.

Posted
Certainly not in the good section and if we have injuries at the back we would consider it a bad window

Are we any worse off than last year??

Posted

Content with our business all told. Keeping Fonte is a big relief. As others, I think we could be a cdm and a striker light. Bony on loan would have been good. Proven EPL scorer and takes penalties. Shame.

Posted

I wouldnt put us in the good section.

It is the time will tell box. If the main signing does not come off we have had a terrible window.

I think it is too much to expect of the young player we bought from Bayern to make our midfield strong

Posted

Stunned that anyone would put our summer in the "good" bracket - or give it 4/5.

At best we get an OK rating. What we've really done is shread the cohesion of the management and playing staff and sold 3 good players (1 utter world class) whilst making a bit of profit; tearing up the club ethos of 4-3-3 and youth development still further at the same time.

We've signed bright young players, hopefully it comes good in the end. But its real waste to have done this to ourselves again (all for a bit of dosh) when we were the 2nd best team of 2016 and just missed champions league last season. Some fans have blinkers on.

Posted
Biggest problem that makes us weaker is the change in system more than anything else.

Not necessarily in the long run though? You're judging on a stunted pre-season and without Bertrand in the team (full backs are crucial to the system).

Plus. We look better than we did at this time last year when Koeman had a full preseason.

We were in the "Winners" in the "Winners and Losers" on Football 365 too...maybe some of our fans just don't know what they're talking about. That's what I'd go with.

I think our fans are the most equipped to have an opinion actually, seeing as though we've watched us for so many years....

Seeing us the last few seasons, and seeing us at the start of this one.

Maybe I am wrong, but I see that our fans have 4 concerns....

- Lack of height that Pelle gave us

- Lack of physical presence that Wanyama gave us

- Lack of creativity and pace that Mane gave us

- Lack of misplaced flicks, back heels etc that Pelle gave us

Height. Pelle is 6cm taller than Austin, and played a role that held the ball up better as a target man. Mobility wise I don't think we'll miss him but as a target man I think that option would have been useful. I still don't think we can judge Austin on what we have seen so far, although far too many seem happy to write him off completely. And that magnificent chest of Pelle's.....

It was interesting listening to some pundit about Spurs' transfer window and Wanyama. He said that he was not an improvement over Dembelle and/or Dier. So yes, while his presence will be missed (that is when he was actually on the pitch and actually giving a ****) I am happy enough with Hojbjerg, even if he plays in a different style. I think it safe to say at the least, that he is a more intelligent player.

Boufal by all accounts (other than those on this forum) is highly regarded. Some even say that he is better than Mané. I am sure we will see, but if he is near Mané then we will all be happy. As for him missing games for AFCON, it is worth remembering so would Mané have. I seem also to be the only person who thinks that Mané was a JRod replacement while he was injured. There is of course that big question as to whether JRod can get back to where he was, but it is worth remembering that he would probably have gone to the World Cup and that Spurs were seemingly desperate to sign him.

The flicks and misplaced passes. Going by last weeks game, maybe Davis has taken over that job.

Difficult to say West Ham's has been "ok", it has been an embarrassment. They've publicised about a hundred players they wanted, and virtually none of them joined. they ended up with a very poor bunch of 5th choices, they just can't attract the kind of player they wanted. I'd say west ham had the worst window of all, simply because of the chasm between what they went after, and what they ended up with. Only everton can compete with them on that score. Leicester had a very good window, and Stoke is interesting.

Saints were solid I'd say, with one gamble which could make the window an amazing one, or just a solid one if it doesn't work out. The best signings are the contract extensions, getting VVD to sign for longer is epic.

Wouldn't have said Juanmi was 'utterly world class' personally.

Seriously, if you're in about Mané you are massively overrating his talents. He may be 'world class' for about 3 games a season but the rest are a mixture of decent and anonymous. If he was, much better teams than Liverpool would be after him.

I'm confused. We haven't lost any defenders since last season and have signed a right back.

Now, about those injuries: we already have Pied out for the season, Bertrand hasn't played yet, Gardos is just about starting to show signs of coming back, and Fonte wasn't back in time for the first game.

So given that we're coping fine even with 3 defensive injuries, I don't see why the defence is being considered a problem.

Yoshida, Gardos, Targett and Martina are competent cover and individually fulfil their roles in covering well enough. We're not going to be signing two top class players for every position and few will be happy with the supporting role that three of those 4 seem to be.

in other words, he turned them down for London and Champions League

Seems as if most Evertonions have lost faith in him. No one gives anyone a chance these days.

a few on the GOT forum

Bit harsh on the family signing Stek when we had Robles.

Why did we get Williams when it's going to upset Jags? It's pathetic

It's not about upsetting players it's about improving the team. You don't not sign a player because it will upset another??

Does this mean we now won't sign players because it will jeopardise the future of the players we already have?

If Moshiri has sent that text message he's either extremely naive or extremely stupid. This all stinks of Venkys MK2

this did make me chuckle

i thought the moral of the story is never trust anyone from wigan athletic in brown shoes

The chairman's explanation does read like one of MLG's more extreme apologist routines. I can almost see him saying exactly that kind of thing. We can't sign a new defensive midfielder because it would upset Romeu.

Anyone know what's happened to all those Everton fans who signed up to this MB a few months ago? You'd have thought they'd all be back on here giving it large after the transfer window closed. Odd one. Maybe they've gone around to Tartan Owl's house to compare notes...

It is emerged that sissoko will cost Spurs £6m a season, at the start of every season. (Up to 5 payments)

Should he be sold, that payment stops

Potentially a great deal for Spurs and terrible one for Newcastle if true.

I heard that it would be done in installments, but I assumed it would be over a season or 2 - but in reality he will probably never cost them £30m. If they get 2/3 years out of him then they've spent under £20m on him. Good deal on paper that. I think Newcastle in the end were pressured to get him out and to save face with the fans they came up with a deal that 'may' (i.e never) reach £30m.

I'd be very surprised if Sissoko had the sort of work rate that poch demands from his players he has spent several seasons at Newcastle barely bothering to turn up while telling everyone he is good enough for the CL.

I think they're busy sharpening the pitch forks.

Who would of thought that a shady billionaire who made his money working with a Russian career criminal would be anything less than honest. He's going to fleece them dry.

Why is it when someone turns up with magic beans Scousers go weak at the knees?

£100m + £50m Stones + £75m Lukaku = total kitty of £225m to spend & top 4 wasn't it?

Hmm... But we don't... Yes we have relative points but we had far easier home start this season and team confidence was clearly much higher last season. Still time... But let's not kid ourselves we should have 4 pts minimum regardless of formation tactics etc with squad we still have. This is the major source of concern and doubt and why there is suspicion even from those normally with a lot more optimism. Still time to get the 'new direction' but the worry is that there is an air of complacency from top to bottom, and as fans we know how bad that can be on a single match day let alone across a whole season.

So what happens if next summer they sell him for £20m? They still only pay £6m?

Don't think we should be classed as having a good window.

The least we should have done was spend the money our sales generated. Another £12m player and we would all have been happy.
