If you think we need a new striker - which striker do you drop from squad?

Assuming we don't change formation, we play with 2 strikers and 2 on the bench. If we buy a striker - redmond, long, Austin or J Rod will need to be dropped from the squad.

If you think we need a striker which one would you drop?

Considering Jay Rod and Austin usually sit on the bench that's a strange question.

Redmond and Long are ok but they need support in the pitch and a creative midfielder would help.

If we buy a striker then 1 of those 4 won't play or be on the bench.

Austin as Rodriguez is more versatile but why Redmond is being played as a striker I don't know.

Maybe because we don't have another striker? If we signed one, maybe he would then go back to his "traditional" position. However, I am not adverse to managers thinking that players can play in places other than their traditional ones, eg Bale - started off a left back.

We need to drop someone as we're only allowed a 25 man squad. I would exclude Isgrove from the squad. I also wouldn't be against selling one of Austin or Rodriguez to bring in a quality striker.

25 players over the age of 21. Unlimited players under 21. Rodriguez is not going to be the same again in my view. Sell him and improve.

  • 2 months later...

I was just thinking about our lack of goals and had a look if there was an old thread about it & found this one...

So.... **BUMP**

We were apparently very close to a striker near deadline day with Jay going out on loan.

I'm wondering if we will re-visit that... Or *fingers-crossed* Jay can find some sort of confidence & form before January.

Will we revisit?

We have a manager that cares more about possession than goals AND a club that cares more about its bank balance than its trophy cabinet

That's not a great recipe and no I don't think we will revisit the glaring and fairly desperate situation

Instead we will continue using Redmond (who is not a striker) and allow our competition to further improve the gap between us and them

I don't think Puel cares more about possession than goals- it's just that his method of getting goals includes keeping possession. You need to score goals to win games and I'm sure he realises this.

Also, I'd rather be a club that cares about the bank balance than win the FA Cup and end up like that lot down the road.

We lost a game- we'll lose more this season but we'll win some too.

We have only ever won one cup... So did all the previous boards care only about money?

A master craftsman at work.

Well Redmond isn't a striker but as the manager insists he is and will continue to persevere with that idea if I had to drop a striker to bring in a new one I would send Jay Rod out on loan to get 4/5 months of game time under his belt. That's the only way I believe we will see if he can regain the form he had before that terrible injury or whether that injury has taken that edge out of his game.

Do a swap with west brom in January. Jrod for Berahino.

Get Morgan back on loan.

Clasie, martina to Everton.

Play boufal and tadic either side of Berahino/Austin/long, and watch goals flow

Berahino who has a sh*t attitude, 4 goals last year and 0 this?

Sign him up.

If we can get £10m for Clasie, it would be like getting a 50% off discount code for Schniderlin.

Has been pretty obvious from the start we needed another striker, not sure how many goals we've scored from open play, where we create the chance and score, but most of our goals seem to be from a game of ping pong in the box with the ball eventually finding the net.

We lost Mane and Pelle, maybe Redmond is supposed to replace Mane, those are big shoes to fill I'm afraid, though I do rate Redmond, personally I think we should have gone in for Benteke, the chances we create he'd have got a few, JRod should be gone, sorry but that's life, if he'd stayed fit he would have angled for a move when the argie left and would be gone by now anyway so sod loyalty. Austin could be swapped out with Benteke, let them fight it out to find their form. Berahino is another, I know his attitude at WBA stinks but maybe he needs a move away, surely he knows he's on his last chance now. I'm sure there were other strikers available.

Fact of the matter is most people were a little surprised we didn't sign another striker, we had the money, we had the pull with Europe but we squandered it by trying to be too clever, unfortunately most of the teams above us have pushed on, whilst we've regressed, unfortunately in football if you don't invest you go backwards, especially when you lose your star goal scorers

JayRod needs to go out on loan in January and play week in, week out again to see if he can recapture any of that form from years back. Hopefully Long can come good again once he's back from his injury, but certainly looks as though we could do with a clinical striker in January.

Redmond has been our most dangerous player. Puel has said that we don't play with wide players, so his only role is a striker. He won't be getting dropped. We need better balls in the box and under Puel's system that relies on the full backs getting forward. As soon as we sort out the right back spot the better.

To be honest, the way Jay is looking at the moment I'd be keen to send him to Blackburn in Jan and get Gallagher back in our squad. Must be a better option right now (I acknowledge that being at Blackburn and playing every week is doing Sam the world of good by the way, but still)
