benjii Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 They are the two we need to upgrade in their current positions.Far too sloppy on the ball.We need a big black powerhouse in midfield and someone without poor composure and the touch of a rapist upfront.I've been quite impressed with Puel - he's clearly instilled a nice style and some confidence in our players but he's got a couple of duffers in certain positions. S-Clarke Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Davis was awful today, but harsh on Long. Not sure he's quite come to terms with the setup yet and he's a bit rusty, but he's been a good player for us and will continue to be a great outlet for us in terms of pace. Lighthouse Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Long was excellent in the 2nd half of last season. True but he has been distinctly average the rest of his career. I don't particularly rate either personally, neither would be in my first choice 11. I'd go back to 4-2-3-1 with a front 6 of Hojbjerg - Romeu Redmond - please for the love of f**k a decent #10 - Tadic Austin

pangy Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Long needs service,he will not beat 3 defenders and smash one in from 25yds he is not that type of player, he needs balls to run on to,he needs balls whipped in to head in....no wingers means less balls in, and if we can't get it to Tadic who is supposed to create everything he will have a poor season. Long was arguably our best player 2nd half of the season when we had Mane & Tadic either side

Hodgey Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 I've got a differing view. Both were excellent last season and should be this - but I don't know if the malaise is due to getting up to speed post the euros or this new formation. Both played looked pretty ****ed off to me and I don't know which it is but fear the latter. Also - whilst I like long as a trier and on his day a great striker - it worries me that we are going into a season with him as clear no 1, he should be back up or desperately working to stay in the team
austsaint Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Long was excellent in the 2nd half of last season. He was, but he got plenty of good service and space courtesy of Mane and Tadic.
Roger Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Long was excellent in the 2nd half of last season. Best he's played in whole career. No guarantee that he will be that good ever again. The miss when one on one was awful

Dig Dig Posted 19 August, 2016 Share Posted 19 August, 2016 Square pegs, round holes. Looks that way at the moment. If we continue to look limp up front I hope Puel isn't stubborn with a formation which doesn't work. Pretty obvious that 4231 is our best bet against our options. And the Redmond-Henry talk is just bizarre.

Roger Posted 20 August, 2016 Share Posted 20 August, 2016 Davis tries really hard and is British. Can't criticise him or expect better. Ever. Why is the fact he's British important? Also, you can expect a lot more from him than the closing down for the first goal. A player like him hard work and closing down should be a given. Donatello Posted 20 August, 2016 Share Posted 20 August, 2016 As above, I'm not sure the system suits either, and I'm beginning to think a manager should adapt his tactics to suit the players at his disposal, rather than vice versa. That or buy players he deems suitable. P.S Davis can't play CM. I used to say it when it there was two CMs, and I used to say that perhaps he'd be better suited to a 3 CM system....nope. A player like him hard work and closing down should be a given. I think he was alluding to the likely reason why hardly anyone ever criticises SD - even when he has a mare, most posters will limit themselves to 'Davis did okay except for X, Y & Z', while for most players, the excoriation of X, Y & Z would be drawn out in lingering detail. The fact that he's British, hard-working and easier to identify with than most flashy modern footballers, is probably the reason why he's so highly rated, despite being bang average or worse in every phase of play. Mowgli Posted 20 August, 2016 Share Posted 20 August, 2016 Sell them both and reinvest. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're kidding. Both came close to POTY last season. Good footballers like these should be able to adapt to changing roles and a slight variation on tactics. For all the talk of the diamond, I still see a similar style of play as under Poch. It could just as easily be described as a 3-4-3 when in possession (using wing backs) and a 4-4-2 when defending. The only issues for me does concern though two players though. Long needs time to develop his partnership with Redmond and Davis needs to allow Hojbjerg to lead in midfield as he is, to me, clearly the new Schneiderlin. So that gives Davis a slightly different role to last year.

Bewildered Posted 20 August, 2016 Share Posted 20 August, 2016 Bit harsh on Long since the service to the front men is pretty lousy. However I am not sure Davis has the creative ability or forward threat to really play the way Puel needs the "wide" players in the diamond to play. Either he has to change it or he has to be allowed to bring in players that are more suitable. For me, if he MUST persist with the diamond. There are two options.. Either ---------Romeu------------- ------------------------------ PEH---------------Redmond ------------------------------ ---------Tadic---------------- ------------------------------ ----Long------Austin-------- Or ----------PEH----------------- ------------------------------- Signing------------Redmond ------------------------------- ---------Tadic---------------- ------------------------------ ----Long------Austin--------
Saint Garrett Posted 20 August, 2016 Share Posted 20 August, 2016 Can't play Redmond as a CM, not going to happen, if he plays he plays as one of the strikers or as #10, and after bigging him up as a striker for the last month, not sure Puel will swallow his pride and play him anywhere else, or a different system for that matter...
