BotleySaint Posted 8 January, 2009 Share Posted 8 January, 2009 Hurrah! He isn't young, he isn't old. He's tall and strong. Lets hope he's good enough to keep Lancashire out the team for a bit. Olly needs more development time.
del boy Posted 8 January, 2009 Share Posted 8 January, 2009 Echo story http://m6live.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4033777.Saints_sign_Saeijs/ Funny how clubs always "swoop" for a player - they never seem to just sign them in a leisurely manner

Saint Martini Posted 8 January, 2009 Share Posted 8 January, 2009 Why has it taken Jan 6 months to "raid" one of his old clubs? Redknapp takes mere days.... He last played there in 1983-84, I don't think Saeijs was on the books then.
krissyboy31 Posted 8 January, 2009 Share Posted 8 January, 2009 Funny how clubs always "swoop" for a player - they never seem to just sign them in a leisurely manner Can't say we exactly 'swooped' for Rudi. That was the most protracted and 'leisurely' signing in history.
smithy Posted 8 January, 2009 Share Posted 8 January, 2009 Funny how clubs always "swoop" for a player - they never seem to just sign them in a leisurely manner After serious consideration.....Mind I think we "swooped" in desparation, although he looks like he may be half decent. I welcome the signing, can't be any worse than the nipper that gets sent off/booked/gives away pens, can he?

SoccerMom Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 Excellent - even a pronunciation guide! Now that they've told us, are we going to get straplines like: Saeijs-ing up the opposition Bringing strikers down to Saeijs ? I do hope so. Chap in the Chapel Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 A common-sense signing for once. Now we just need another big centre-back to play alongside him, a proper right-back, Wotton back in the team, McGoldrick out of the team and a big centre forward to hold up the ball and we might have a serviceable Championship-level side... John B Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 Funny how clubs always "swoop" for a player - they never seem to just sign them in a leisurely manner Yes we swoop but Cardiff snap up Rangers' Burke What is the difference Perhaps we did not swoop or snap up in the the right manner for Cork
Saint_clark Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 Whilst he sounds exactly the kind of defender we need, let's just hope that he doesn't prove the perceived "gap" between English lower league and Dutch lower league to be correct. I know that bad luck can be augmented but we have had a poor run with CBs over the past few years. Perhaps this is the guy to break the mould. Saint_clark Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 He was playing in the Dutch top division. Really? My mistake. I thought it was one of Jans old clubs, and I thought he'd never managed above Dutch div 2.

I agree with you on everything bar Wotton whose legs went a couple of years ago after a serious injury at Plymouth. Plus Wotton seems to be regarded as bad meat by the first team management. Wouldn't have minded a younger Wotton.
Saint Martini Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 last three years in their "premiership" before that with Den Haag -which I think was Jan's old club -but don't believe at the same time. http://www.skysports.com/football/player/0,19754,11918_205275,00.html played in their recent games -in relegation zone of premiership (Eredivisie) Saeijs played at ADO from '97-98 season and they promoted to the Dutch PL in 2003. After that he's played in the Dutch PL for both ADO and Roda. Neither of these clubs have been managed by JP but in '83-'84 Poortvliet did play at Roda one season. The step form Dutch to English football is a weird one, sometimes crap players in Holland prove to be half decent in the UK (de Zeeuw or Wiekens) and players that do well in the Netherlands prove to be ****e in the UK (Berry Powell for example). We'll have to wait and see if Saeijs is the type of player that thrives in the UK but he does have the build for it at least.
Chap in the Chapel Posted 9 January, 2009 Share Posted 9 January, 2009 Wotton over fit Schneiderlin / Surman / Gillet or Lallana? Certainly over Gillett. With Surman or Schneiderlin (depending on whether one is sold this month) I still think he could have a part to play in the 'holding' positions. Lallana should play further forward off a big striker as he's wasted out wide. Whether or not he can last 90 minutes, the situation that Saints are in requires scrappers - Wotton is the only real 'foot-in' midfielder we've got presently. Additionally, he's a lot more aware of what's required on the pitch than Poortvliet is, although he seems to have been frozen out for making this clear. I agree, another big centre half instead of Perry and a right back that can win things in the air. We might then stop shipping goals from set peices. I also agree we need a target man. Saga does nothing for me. But why on earth would we want Wotton back in the team?
