Charlie Austin to leave ?

Austin is by a quite a margin our major goal threat. For me it's imperative that we keep him and if we don't then we have a suitable replacement in place before we do.

If the formation needs changing to incorporate him then do it, he'll get you 15-20 goals a season which is a big enough reason to change style to suit him - especially when I can't see any other player getting close to this.

I don't think the club will let him go anyway.

The Daily Echo also understands that there has been no interest in Saints striker Charlie Austin.

The 27-year-old only joined Saints in January for a fee of £4m, but has been linked with a move to Everton to link up again with Ronald Koeman if Romelu Lukakau is sold.

Austin is also reportedly the subject of a loan bid from QPR, but again Saints have not had contact and, like with Fonte, would not welcome it either.

Make of it what you will ( because these days I've given up on trying to work out who stays or leaves).

Apart from the debut, he's had about as much impact as Forren. Not sure why he's cut quite so much slack on here compared to others. Good job it was only a 4mil disposable punt on the fellow.
Maybe because he hasn't really started any games an most sensible posters don't judge based on 10 minute Substitute appearances.

Didn't hear it...but all they ever do is pick up on a story and get a retired player to make a few meaningless and uninformed comments.

It was that idiot Moose chap at 9:30

That's better!

Used to enjoy Talkspot going back to about 2003. Now they're awful.

They out did themselves recently with those two chaps called Mike who just shout at each other and bicker the whole time. Usually they keep them to the graveyeard shift but they got bumped up to mid morning. The adverts were a welcome distraction. Anyway, not sure why I bother listening to it anymore.

I agree but we don't seem to be active in the transfer window - I would have expected a few French stars coming our way. Maybe our manager is not a big enough name1

An interesting theory, but Koeman was a big a player name as we're ever likely to get, and it's not like we signed any Dutch players who were significantly better than any other nationality (apart from Van Dijk, but he was obvious enough that even I knew we should and could sign him and I barely take any notice of transfer rumours).

Also, how many stars of Prem quality are there in Ligue 1 who haven't already been signed, aren't being signed by Prem clubs with more money than us, and would actually improve us?

I won't cry a bucket if he goes. At the moment we've paid more per goal from him than any other striker I can think of (ignoring that odd thing called Osvaldo)
Be fair though Pancake, he's not had the best service or a decent run. He's a cracking forward if given the right circumstances. He has a quick brain and gets into goalscoring positions that others fail to see Edited by OldNick

Hard to score in 10 minutes of play. Last season 2nd half he was hurt, this season he is out due to the formation. I think in a normal q or 2 up top formation he would score goals and play well. I really wouldn't blame him if he wanted to leave.

If I judged him on that cameo at Old Trafford he would get a rave review. That he's not been picked to start since means he's been unfit to start due to either injury or lack-lustre training performances.

Have no idea what to make of Charlie Austin. Had no real chance to prove his worth to be fair. Has undoubted pedigree, yet seen nothing in even his brief cameos to have much realistic hope. So I'm holding out that he is one of those magic players who on the day just knows where to be. Praying he'll come on and play a blinder cementing his place in a live game scenario where he excels and we won't look back...

He scored a few Fox in The Box goals in the friendlies didn't he?

It's what he does in the box that we need . We don't seem to have any other natural goal scorers.

If Southampton fans were fish, many would be flapping about on the deck gasping for breath, because so many take the bait so easily. Like fish, stories in the media about so called transfer interests should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Ummm ...good point.

Maybe his "don't believe everything you read in the press post" was actually aimed at The Echo saying no offers and he's happy to stay report :scared:

Permission for lower lip to tremble sir

the one issue with `fox in the box' type strikers is that you need to get the ball in the box for them to be of any use and to do that you tend to need strikers that are good outside of the box...

He was picked to start at Bournemouth, and since then it's been injury. This season it's clearly the formation which means he's out of favour. I'm sure he'd score 20 goals if we set the entire team up to play to his strengths, but clearly the opinion is that we might get better results not doing that at the moment.

Tonights performance changed anyones mind??

Yes it has, I think he may want to actively push for either Everton or QPR at this point. No point in him coming on for the last 20 minutes to save a game. He should be on a team which pairs him up with a Long type forward, a ream with a more traditional formation. Look at Manu tonight, most teams play this way.

I think he has no chance in this system

Fuking odd stuff at saints

English supporters are all used to playing hoof ball, there was a lot of that under Koeman last season.

The passing game on the ground I saw tonight was very good to watch at times. Does it need fine tuning ? Of course it does.

Are we completely accustomed to Puel's system? Not yet, he joined us beginning of July, it takes time for a team to play the style of play a manager wants, especially when it is new.

Will we improve collectivelly ? Of course we will, and we will be alright this season.

We need to be patient and support the team 100%.

Puel said after the game that Man U were more physical than us and I agree, but that our passing game could have easily outpowered had we taken our chances.

All in all, what i saw tonight was very encouraging.
