ericofarabia Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Don't worry guys, Puel has never lost a Premier League match as a manager. I'll drink to that!!
VectisSaint Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Don't worry guys, Puel has never lost a Premier League match as a manager. Neither has Walter Mazzarri He hasn't lost a game for nearly 2 years.
Lighthouse Posted 12 August, 2016 Author Posted 12 August, 2016 Neither has Walter Mazzarri He hasn't lost a game for nearly 2 years. Does anyone know much about Mazzarri? I thought Kinky Sanchez Flores did a decent job and will be a tough act to follow on relatively limited resources.
Matthew Le God Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Has the game sold out yet? They announced it had sold out 3 days ago. Southampton FC @SouthamptonFC Aug 9 Tickets for #SaintsFC's opening game of the season against #WatfordFC have now sold out. Thanks for your support!
krissyboy31 Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Has the game sold out yet? Yes but the ticket exchange thingy is in operation.
Batman Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 3-1 to saints nice flowing football on show shlong x2 with redmond
LGTL Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 My seat is available on the ticket exchange if anyone wants it, 42 row HH
ericofarabia Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Good chance of a delayed kick off, both managers using translators, so pre match interviews will take longer than normal :-) Dread to think how the team tactics get on!!
sotonnick Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 Preview is now up on: http://theitchenperspective.blogspot.co.uk/
vectraman Posted 12 August, 2016 Posted 12 August, 2016 It'll be interesting, two new managers both unproven in the premier league, both teams with new players, and Saints without our first choice left back playing a new system which is not fluid yet.... If I was Watford's manager, I'd be giving our left back a severe workout with a pacy forward and right wingback combo. Targett looked very vulnerable to pace last season, and fonte may not be there either to help out. Mind you I've no idea what Watford's players are like - they were certainly poor back January on a cold wet night! Prediction 1-1.
niceandfriendly Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Actually looking forward to seeing how Targett has progressed especially going forward. Really hope he can kick on this season when he gets the chance as at times last season he looked very dangerous.
Yorkshire Saint Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Actually looking forward to seeing how Targett has progressed especially going forward. Really hope he can kick on this season when he gets the chance as at times last season he looked very dangerous. Agreed although I'd probably use the word vulnerable

Batman Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 (edited) With Pelle gone I am.looking forward to learning who will be the recipient of your never ending criticism. call it as I see it. if they play shyte IMO, I will say so if they play well IMO, likewise I (for some time) thought we were a much better outfit with Long as the central striker over pelle. I think that was the correct opinion to have pelle was a decent option but for too long in his time here, he played when he didnt really merit it it was a bit like Jermaine Wright. always seemed to play depsite playing badly too many times Edited 13 August, 2016 by Batman
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 With Pelle gone I am.looking forward to learning who will be the recipient of your never ending criticism. He had an agenda against Pelle, slagging him off at every turn, cannot bear to be wrong, ironic as he is wrong 90% of the time For my money he will pick on Redmond, to criticise on repeat
hypochondriac Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 What an uninspiring starting XI... Agreed. Seems a very functional but fairly dull lineup. Let's hope for a good performance and win regardless!
trousers Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Only surprise for me there is Hojbjerg not in the starting 11. Been one of our best players in pre-season IMO
Yorkshire Saint Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Interesting selection - would rather see Pierre over JWP
InvictaSaint Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 What an uninspiring starting XI... That's the spirit; get behind the team [emoji849]
nta786 Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 What an uninspiring starting XI... It is what we expected though? 442 Diamond then? Forster Cedric VVD Yoshida Targett Romeu Davis JWP Tadic Redmond Long That left side is pretty weak admittedly, hopefully Targett steps up.
hypochondriac Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 That's the spirit; get behind the team [emoji849] Really weird thing to say. It's an uninspiring lineup that doesn't mean we will play badly or lose.
ericofarabia Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Agreed. Seems a very functional but fairly dull lineup. Let's hope for a good performance and win regardless! Pretty strong Subs Bench unless we have any injuries in Defence
Window Cleaner Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 What an uninspiring starting XI... Watford's doesn't look any better.
James Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 It is what we expected though? 442 Diamond then? Forster Cedric VVD Yoshida Targett Romeu Davis JWP Tadic Redmond Long That left side is pretty weak admittedly, hopefully Targett steps up. Got to be the blandest midfield we've put out in recent years. Bizarre that one of our major signings and best players in pre season is overlooked in favour of JWP (who weirdly seems to start the opening game of every season and then get dropped). Massive shame Fonte isn't deemed fit enough.
Pamplemousse Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Their big money signing Success is out injured
James Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Really weird thing to say. It's an uninspiring lineup that doesn't mean we will play badly or lose. Precisely, weird how this forum interprets anything other than "everything Saints do is wonderful" as a lack of support...
adrian lord Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Hojberg not starting is a bit of a surprise
Matthew Le God Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 What an uninspiring starting XI... Agreed. Seems a very functional but fairly dull lineup.! Cheer up! Lots of pace with Redmond, Long and Cedric. Creativity from Tadic, Davis and Ward-Prowse Very good outfield options on a strong bench Austin, Fonte, Hojbjerg, Pied, Clasie, Rodriguez.
Saint Benali Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Ward-Prowse starting is a surprise. Personally I expected it. I don't agree with it but its what the manager has been brought in for. To play the youngsters etc. Koeman dropped him when we found our form and I imagine that annoyed Les and co. Can't sell youngsters if they are not playing and raising their value. I think the one I am more concerned with is Fonte. Thankfully its only Watford we are playing.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 JWP must be ****ing brilliant in preseason
LGTL Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 JWP is still the academy golden boy. If he was actually good enough we'd have sold him years ago. Young, English but still here. Says it all.
igsey Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Must be a strange feeling for José, when was the last time he started a game at St Mary's on the bench? Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

I'm all for playing the youngsters but Ward-Prowse, who must be pushing 22 has had so many chances to establish himself as an attacking mid-fielder and consistently comes up short - free kicks and corners aside. Let's see some of the other youngsters.
Saint Benali Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 I'm all for playing the youngsters but Ward-Prowse, who must be pushing 22 has had so many chances to establish himself as an attacking mid-fielder and consistently comes up short - free kicks and corners aside. Let's see some of the other youngsters. I agree. I have said it for a few seasons now. For a player with over 100 PL games he has had a really non eventful career so far. But as mentioned above the club want him to be the poster boy. They will continue to push him as that regardless of how good he actually is. And I don't think he is that good at all. My friend calls him "The Crab". Goes sideways and backwards.
Jonnyboy Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 This way Fonte gets a nice reception when he's brought on.
Pamplemousse Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Cheer up! Lots of pace with Redmond, Long and Cedric. Creativity from Tadic, Davis and Ward-Prowse Very good outfield options on a strong bench Austin, Fonte, Hojbjerg, Pied, Clasie, Rodriguez. I agree, I look at the side and I'm feeling positive. If it doesn't work then moan after the match but the team is being written off before we've even started
tajjuk Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Odd to see Hojberg on the bench to be honest, full pre-season and looked probably the best player. Also would say Austin is unlucky to miss out there as well, Fonte presumably just not fit enough rather than moving.
Mallagroth Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Got to be the blandest midfield we've put out in recent years. Bizarre that one of our major signings and best players in pre season is overlooked in favour of JWP (who weirdly seems to start the opening game of every season and then get dropped). Massive shame Fonte isn't deemed fit enough. Think I must have missed a season as the midfield looks nearly identical to last few competitive games I saw. Tadic, JWP, Davis. The only change I can see is Romeu who looked great when Wanyama was off on one of his many suspensions and in pre season. Redmond and long are playing as strikers. Yoshida and target are backups because first team are t ready. Wtf is uninspiring? We have to make changes but in truth tbe core of our team is first choice. **** your pants after the match give the new lads a chance to prove their worth, could yet be an upgrade.
JoeShmoe Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Big game / season this for JWP - could he become properly influential in games or be meh like he often has been. Hojberg is IMO different class so JWP at least has a chance to showcase his talent
nta786 Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 In the stadium now, our pitch looks an beautiful keep the faith! I'm happy to see JWP play too, he is our poster boy but I want him to come good! Strong bench for Puel if things don't go to plan. COYS!!
Baird of the land Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 I can see why Puel might want to ease Hojberg into the Premiership. I think the midfield and attack looks fine. It's the defence that gives me jitters, we really need Van Dijk to show some leadership in the absence of Bertrand and Fonte.
Pass the Dutchie Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 http://www.feed4u.tv/watch/1638073/2/Southampton-FC-vs-Watford-FC.html
corky morris Posted 13 August, 2016 Posted 13 August, 2016 Nervous about the back 4. Fingers crossed!
